A blot to honor the gods

The Stormarksgothi enters the Hof. He walks to the harrow.

Solemnly, he prepares for the ceremony. Setting up the drinking horn, the blot bolli, the twig, the hammer, he opens his heart and mind to the gods.

The Stormarksgothi picks up the hammer and performs the Hammer Rite.

STORMARKSGOTHI:
(raising the Hammer of Thor from the Harrow)
(facing north, tracing the shape of the hammer)Mighty Thor, hallow this ground!
(facing east, tracing the shape of the hammer)Mighty Thor, hallow this ground!
(facing south, tracing the shape of the hammer)Mighty Thor, hallow this ground!
(facing west, tracing the shape of the hammer)Mighty Thor, hallow this ground!
In the center, tracing the shape of the hammer)Mighty Thor, hallow this ground!

He returns the hammer to the harrow.

STOMARKSGOTHI: Today we gather to honor the gods and the goddesses of the ancient Norse. The Aesir and the Vanir. They are our friends, they are our companions in Midgard, they are our guides and when we are in need, they are our support and our assistance.

Hail to Odin who fights to prevent Ragnarok...and he is both a knower of the runes and has the wisdom of Mimir.

Hail to Frigga, who is our mother. She protects families and children and knows the future. Aside from Odin, only she may sit in the throne of the All-Seeing.

Hail to Thor, our protector. The warder of Midgard fights off the giants and protects those denizens of Midgard who call upon him.

Hail to Freya, the goddess of love and sex, and the bringer of wealth. Men call upon her in times of financial need.

Hai to Freyr, a god of nature and the forests. He is also a god of plenty. We call upon him for abundance and to protect nature.

Hail to Eir, who is the goddess of healing. She knows of ways to heal those others cannot. It is said she will never turn down one in need.

Hail Balder, the bright one, favored son of the All-Father, doomed to die only to be reborn and to rule in Asgard after Ragnarok.

Hail to Heimdall, guardian of Bifrost, the Rainbow Bridge...the passageway between Midgard and Asgard. He is also known as a patron of scholars.

Hail to Forseti, god of justice. Without prejudice, his justice is given out.

Hail Tyr, often thought of as a god of war, truly a god of justice through force of arms.

Hail Hela who resides in Hel. She will be Balder's hostess until he returns to Midgard. Some call her evil...but evil she is not. She is merely the face of death in the Nine Worlds. And death is but a part of the cycle of life.

Let us now honor these and all the gods.

The Stormarksgothi passes the hammer over the bolli, which is filled with mead.

STORMARKSGOTHI: Mighty Thor, hallow this offering in the name of the gods of Asgard.

The Stormarksgothi passes around the horn, filled with mead.

The remains of the mead are poured into the blot bolli.

The Stormarksgothi dips the twig into the bolli and uses it to sprinkle each celebrant.

STORMARKSGOTHI: May the favor of the gods be with you as we honor them today.

After all have been blessed, the Stormarksgothi speaks.

STORMARKSGOTHI: We thank the Aesir and the Vanir for joining us today and pray that our honoring of them will be reflected in their regard for us.

The celebrants leave one by one, filled with the love of the gods.

Thank you for visiting, and I do hope that holding blots or other celebrations occasionally will give the community a chance to get to know the religion better.
