14Wests - January 23, 2009 09:36 AM (GMT)
The cowboys are talking about 2009 final, the intensity at training is on a par with 2005,however the finals are a long way off.But today they have signed Shannen Heggarty from the Roosters,a bit more thrust into the back line, their fordward pack looks big this year.....Maybe West Tigers v Cowboys in 2009........roll on 2009 season...........cheers......14wests

Nth QLD having something Wests don't. A genuine No.7. All club's need a quality halfback to be finals material let alone standing a chance of making the big one. Unless John Morris gets bitten by a radioactive spider or something of the sort that instills him with Joey Johns like abilities, then it could be a rather long season especially if injuries and rep duty take its toll. I hope young Lui and Dunley have blinders in their trial's to force Sheens to opt with a young No.7 rather than a make shift utility. What has Coach Sheens got to lose? Nothing. What has he got to gain? Everything!!

Hi Gobbs,Yes JT is a great leader behind the pack.John Morris not so good.I did notice this when matthew head was at halfback the WT backs moved well in attack and defence and most time won the game.He is a quality half if injury free, but I notice he has gone back to Saints, wayne benett will get the best out of him.Hope coach sheens does promote some of the under 20's into first grade,as WT need some new young blood.Glad to see robbie farrah is staying and is the new captain....could be a good season ahead....Cheers 14wests

Coach Sheens has a habit of moving players around which can cause confusion at times.
I know he means well but at times it reflects on the out come of the game and score.
If he was to bring up the reserves more often and work on them in a dedicated position he could end up on a better team and a final hopeful.

Spot on. Team selection and persisting with a formula that just does not work can ruin a season. I certainly believe it has done for the past few years. It seems everyone else can see the problem except the man making the decisions. and the time when his persistent attitude ends, it's a little too late. There is no point persisting with an individual who isn't a halfback's boot lace.

Lui, Dunley, Lazarus etc, are all pivots. they're all halves, player makers etc. They may lack the experience, but once upon a time players like Holman, Summons, Raudonikis, Mortimer, Sterling, Johns, Thurston did too. I am in no way saying these kids are in the same league or breathe as those mentioned, but I keep referring to young Chris Sandow from South Sydney. The kid got an opportunity, was a halfback by trade and has not looked back.

Coach Sheens has got to adopt the same mentality. You want specialists playing in their rightful position, rather than throwing a make shift individual 'hoping' that they'll do the job when history has shown, they fall short every time.
