seeing as the british pound happens to be about two canadian dollars, it looks like i'll be watching the money pretty carefully this summer.
I'll most likely be staying at the Once Brewed Hostel, by the way
the twice brewed inn's website doesn't seem to want to load any other pages besides the homepage, but it looks a little pricey.
are there any cheap places to eat within a reasonably short distance of the hostel? any sort of grocery store nearby that you would recommend where i can buy, say, enough pasta for 2 weeks? or should i just stock up in leeds or manchester before i head up north?
thanks!
Hey Rob. Love that pub-food sticker-shock huh. And the Twicey's actually on the reasonable end. I'd recommend saving enough $$ for at least one good meal there; usually well worth it.
The closest grocery is in Haltwhistle, 4-5 miles from Once Brewed. It's small, but well-stocked. Then there's the be-all/end-all in Hexham, about 14-15 miles away. A -huge- TESCO supercenter. They've got it all. It's like a WalMart too, so you can get everything you need -- clothes, toiletries, that plasma TV you always wanted. :) And great prices.
As for cheap eats, the world's best fish & chips is in Haydon Bridge, about 7-8 miles away. 3 pounds will feed you for 2 days. And Haltwhistle has a good Indian take-away where you can get good value too.

Hi RobD
I will pass on your info about the website of the Twice Brewed to the people in charge and give the web administrator a good kicking for the poor service (on the website)
Cheers
Mr Twicey
