Title: 2009 digging season
Skippyo - October 29, 2008 01:09 AM (GMT)
Hi all
Im new to the forum and thought it would be a good idea to say hello to everyone. I hope to be over there next year late in the season and if lucky enough to obtain a volunteer spot that would be fantastic.
I can see by a lot of the posts that it can get under your skin and it sounds like a great experience especially for anyone interested in or obsessed even with Roman history :)
Looking forward to this w/end with the applications open from noon on Saturday! and I guess securing accommodation after that is important so any advice there would be greatly appreciated....the Twice Brewed looks close and convenient, and being a Pub looks to have all the nessesities in one sock.
Cheers

welcome, u will never be the same again. only posh people stay in the pub, £5 a night to camp. is that the guy from the borrowers in ur pic? or am i just bein thick... hmmm

I think the pic is Ian Holm, Bilbo Baggins in Lord of the Rings. Or it might be our poster from Down Under!
Regards accomodations, the big factor is whether you have a car. If not, the choices close enough to walk to Vindo are:
camping. hope for nice weather. about a 2 mile walk?
Once Brewed hostel. a roof over your head at least. Cheap. food said to be pretty basic. about 1.3 mile walk.
Twice Brewed. a notch up for accomodations, but not five star. Food is sometimes good, sometimes mediocre. Ale is always good. Friendly folks, I stayed there and have a soft spot for the place. a brisk 1.5 mile walk.
If you have wheels there are numerous other options in a five mile radius.

G'day Laura & Badger
Thanks for the great welcome, whats the borrowers? or am I being thick? lol
Fraid thats not my pic to be honest its Bilbo, mines way too dangerous to be deployed willy nilly!! and besides as a wedig noob I cant upload one anyhows.
Thanks for the feedback on accommodation, the Twiced Brewed I've tried a couple of times but no luck with a response yet. I thought it would be ideal and an easy walk to the digs. Food is not a biggy, friendly folks and good ale would make up for that. Oh and I'd like to have a go at being posh! we dont have any of them down here.
Camping, mmmm maybe next time after I have experienced Northumberland weather! The Maple Lodge & Strand Cottage seem like good alternatives? No car this time but walking is ok with me.
Cheers Phil N

Twice Brewed a fine choice then. It does seem to be the unofficial diggers headquarters for an after work pint.
Remember the time difference and just call them. Brian is the innkeeper. They do answer email but not really fast.
Enjoy!

Where's the camp in relation to the dig? I was thinking I might not be able to afford it again this year but at 5 pounds per night - that might be alright.
Is there a web site for the camp?
Thanks
Jim
EDIT - sorry - just saw the "2 mile walk" post. I should have read further before asking...

You can usually cadge a lift from some lucky digger staying at the Twice Brewed who has a car
