Title: Wet weather gear

MBetz - June 25, 2008 05:39 PM (GMT)
What is the company name for the rain gear that everyone seems to have on hand for those biblical events that happen at Vindolanda every week during the summer? I can't for the life of me come up with the name. Thanks for the help.

MBetz could it be Gore-Tex the waterproof/breathable fabric used by North Face,Berghaus etc..

Alex,
Thanks for the name of Berghaus. Where I am in Florida it is pretty much Columbia Sportswear which is not sturdy enough for digging in and protecting from rain. Columbia is great for keeping the sun off and lightweight to breathe in our warm, humid air but no fun when the wind begins to blow and the rain is sideways like at Vindoloanda.

You should be working so hard that you should not notice these things! Even in the snows of the early weeks I was down to 1 layer (from 5 or 6). I would have gone 1 further but I didn't want to be surrounded by the bodies of those that died from shock o seeing my (not-so) elegant body!

Mat,

get over here, go to Carlisle, go to the mainstreet near the TIC and visit a store called tresspass. Problem sorted at a very reasonable price compared to most of the expensive gear you can pick up, and lets face it, on the excavation it will get trashed.

Andy

P.S. Sadly, no, I don't own shares in the company although I should do the amount I get there... ;)

I think the answer is to do what I do and a previous person does too. Wear lost of layers. Closest to the body is the Vindolanda T-shirt (of any vintage); next out a long-sleeved but thin shirt; next a sleeveless fleece, then a long-sleeved fleece. And on top a very light rain & wind-proof jacket. each of there can be removed or replaced as the weather changes.

And, as can be seen on previous year's records of Justin's teams with me there, the essential accomanying accessories are shorts that used to be green and are now mud-coloured and green wellies (with black & brown stains.)

All in the best possible taste.

Nic, as one of your fellow first week diggers, can I just express my gratitude at you not removing any more layers of clothing!
:D
