At Vindolanda a gang were apprehended when caught trying to escape from the south end of the granary site. While other gang members created disturbances by digging up a main road and lying down sunbathing, causing diversions near the main gate, or throwing rocks, six of them, including two ladies, were involved in a daring attempt to escape.
Two, known only as Chris & Les, formed the escape committee who masterminded the idea. Darren “the drain”, Patrick “digger” and Jeanette (who escaped from Pompeii), were almost successful in breaking into the main drain hoping it would lead to freedom under the wall: while the youngest member, :ph43r: Mick, kept a lookout.
On 29th May five of them were sent to more secure institutions for an indefinite time, but they were unrepentant, shouting “It’s so easy here, we’ll be back!” The sixth, believed to be posing as a visitor taking photographs, managed to escape by slipping past the authorities. Rumours say that he was responsible for giving the game away, but these cannot be confirmed.
