There are a billion Web pages devoted to Hadrian's Wall and the area. Most of you probably have your own favorites already. But it never hurts to keep a list of the really useful ones. Below is my starter list of sites about Vindolanda, the Wall, and the region, that I find myself going back to again and again. If anyone has any to add, let me know!
www.vindolanda.comThe reason this fan site exists.
http://www.romanfrontier.com/Official Web site of Hadrian's Wall Heritage, the governing body for the UN Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site. Lots of up-to-date news on goings-on up and down the Wall, as well as nuts & bolts of how the museums, sites, and foundations are run.
http://www.northumberland-national-park.or...Guide/Visiting/Very useful overview with history, travel information, links to attractions & sites, and information on hiking/cycling the region. A great starting point for the region.
http://vindolanda.csad.ox.ac.uk/Excellent site with well-done overview of Vindolanda history, and hundreds of high-resolution images of actual tablets, along with translations.
http://www.dur.ac.uk/archaeological.servic...arch_framework/Web site dedicated to pulling together centuries' worth of published, public material for the entire Wall and Stanegate frontier systems. Still in its infancy, and a little slow to take off. But appears to have the potential to be a serious boon to the study & discussion of the Wall (and Stanegate forts like Vindolanda).
http://www.romanitas.netBrand new site from a wedigvindolanda.com member serving as a hub for news, stories, and photos from across the Roman world. Check it out often; Vindolanda-specific material is in the planning.
http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/Advocate of rural landscape conservation & usage
http://www.culturenortheast.org/It's not just cows and sheep after all.
http://www.fundsforhistoricbuildings.org.uk/Self-explanatory. Found a nice decrepit northern farmhouse to fix up?
http://www.shepherdswalks.co.uk/Guided walking tours throughout Northumberland, Cumbria, and the Borders
http://www.tynedale.gov.uk/The nuts & bolts of regional government. Still worth a look.
http://www.writingonthewall.uk.com/International creative writing project inspired by the Vindolanda tablets.
Enjoy!
