You know that charming, isolated thatch-roofed house along the Stanegate on your approach to Vindolanda? It's known as Causeway House, and was built in 1770. It's also the
only remaining house in all Northumberland still thatched in the traditional, local heather. For decades (centuries?), the original heather lay beneath a later corrugated iron roof. Its well-preserved remains proved very useful in helping create an accurate restoration. The house is now maintained by the
Landmark Trust and can be rented as a holiday cottage.
