Title: "AAAA Team" alias "Human JCBs"
Description: Rebirth of a wall

brypop - June 14, 2007 03:31 PM (GMT)
Hi everyone just thought it was about time I put a couple of pictures on here. Having had a fantastic two weeks from 20th May to 2nd June, both in areas A and B.
Highlight, well finding the Antonine fort wall of course.
Pardon the pun!

brypop - June 14, 2007 03:38 PM (GMT)
That was the first day view of the wall. So now I have worked out how to post pictures here are some more.

I would like to thank the team lead by Matt for being great trench buddies and Andy, Beth and Robin for the encouragement! B)
The turf cutters, Pam and Kate. Who needs Alan Titchmarch?

Want more?
Looks like the 80 year old mystery is solved!

The supercharged team leader of the HJCBs takes his pick to extend the trench.

I would like to introduce you to the smallest member of the team, or should I say he would have been if he had made it on to site.
Before leaving my accomodation one morning I was putting on my boots when my left foot would not go in to my boot.
I reached in thinking I had left a rolled up sock in there over night. Imagine my surprise when I pulled out Mr Toad, alive but a little sleepy. He must have climbed in to get warm overnight.

brypop - June 14, 2007 04:13 PM (GMT)
I did an extra day with the team before moving on to area B and the others had been joined by four more team members.
Here is Sue,Kate and Robin discussing the wall in the enlarged trench.

Just thought some of you might like to see the Midlands answer to the "Angel of the north". This statue stands just outside Brownhills, in an old coal mining area of Cannock Chase. Not too far from my childhood village.

Thanks Brian. Those are great pictures! I guess the Trust knows what team to call when they need age-old archaeology questions answered at Vindolanda: the "AAAA" Team! Human JCBs to the rescue!!

These are great Bryan. I think Matt is right. Any more 80 year old mysteries waiting to se solved?
Kate.

Cracking pics Bryan. You might be interested to note that your lumpy little pal (I'm not talkng about Matt here either :P ) appears to be now living in a pit in my area. As I haven't yet heard the water pump grumble, I suppose he must still be there!

brypop - June 28, 2007 10:05 AM (GMT)
Our lumpy little friend should be enjoying the wet weather. Hope you are not getting too bored dodging the downpours? What do you think of these marks on the rocks of the Barcombe quarry?

brypop - June 28, 2007 10:14 AM (GMT)
Perhaps they were tally marks? There were more than this, both on the roman quarry and the later one.
Here is another picture of quarry marks from the later workings

brypop - June 28, 2007 10:17 AM (GMT)
And another. Hope you find these of interest.

brypop - June 28, 2007 10:31 AM (GMT)
I found this old postcard of the site any ideas on a date?

brypop - June 28, 2007 10:41 AM (GMT)
I hope that I am not boring everyone with the pictures. I will post just one more for now. This is a feature I spotted on the other side of the wall, beyond Saughy Rigg Farm, near Caw Burn. Have any of you any views on what it may be? I know that there are roman aquaducts in that area but it looks quite interesting.

SacoHarry - June 28, 2007 11:36 AM (GMT)
Great postcard. Talk about lumps and bumps!

- Harry

brypop - June 28, 2007 01:10 PM (GMT)
Yes Harry it was a bit of a mess with all those vehicle tracks and mud. I am hoping someone will come up with a date as there was no message or postmark on the reverse. I am keeping my eyes peeled for more postcards etc of the site in our charity shops.
:)

Judging by the scorched grass 1975 or 1976 but I do not know the extent of the excavations at that time.

brypop - June 29, 2007 11:10 PM (GMT)
Thanks for that Nic, although I think the ground appears to be quite muddy at least in the vehicle tracks B)

Except we all know that one of the biggest features of Vindolanda is the water - not the tablets or the shoes or the etc etc
