Title: online or distance learning courses?

mkendall - June 6, 2007 09:24 PM (GMT)
Hi, I wondered if anyone has tried any online or distance learning courses on archaeology and/or Roman Britain etc. I would be interested to hear what courses are available and any feedback on how good [or not] they were?
Thanks,
Marilyn

Hello,

Leicester Uni does a distance learning course up to and including diploma level. Bristol does the full degree, but attendance at Bristol uni is required one weekend a month during term time.

I've heard great things about Leicester's programs. If you want just a little personal knowledge they have certificate courses, or you can go the Master's track. Their uni Web site (don't remember the URL offhand) does a good job of spelling out what they offer.

Hi
I was looking to see what the Open University has to offer a few months back, and they are introducing an undergraduate module on 'World Archaeology' which covers - well, exactly that! It sounds quite interesting and can be studied as a stand-alone module or be put towards a BA Humanities.
The website is www.open.ac.uk if you want to check it out.

I have completed my Certificate of Archaeology from Leicester Universtity via distance learning. I am currently studying for my Diploma which is equivalent to second year at university. Currently if I wish to finish my degree then I will need to spend the last year at university. However Leicester are looking at ways to be able to complete the degree by distance learning so this could be added soon.

The first module I studied was Roman Britain. I absolutely loved it which is why I have been digging at Vindolanda for the last 4 years. I find the courses are very good. You get all the required text books and a folder with the course work split into weeks. For the Certificate an assignment has to be completed at the end of the module in the form of a 2000 word essay. The essay has to be in on a specific date so it really helps to keep me focused and not lag behind in the course work. There are lots of additional books recommended if a particular subject takes your fancy. They also offer students the ability to remotely use their reference library which is a great resource and books can be checked out and sent to you if you do not have access to a library although I have not used this service as my local library is very good at getting what I want.

A tutor is assigned to you so if you have any questions they are good at getting in touch. There is also a email discuss forum for keeping in touch with other students although in my opinion this needs work.

If you want any more information (I have probably given you too much anyway) then let me know.
