Well, I love words. Deal with it. So I just got a mailing from my Word of the Day mailing list, and I like it, because it refers to a marriage practice among the Baskar--that is, concubinage. When they take concubines from other societies/the other tribe, it is a morganatic marriage.

morganatic PRONUNCIATION: (mor-guh-NAT-ik)
MEANING: adjective: Of or relating to a marriage between two people of different social ranks such that the spouse of lower rank and the children do not share the titles or possessions of the higher-ranking spouse.
USAGE: "Nicholas [Sheremetev] was severely punished by society and his friends for his morganatic marriage, which was regarded as class treason." Simon Sebag; The Serf Who Married Her Owner; The Telegraph (London, UK); Jun 20, 2008. |
And it mentions serfs marrying owners! I mean, how great is that?
Morganatic is hereby the Word of the Day for Thiasa. It may be our new official relationship type, next to 'incest.'
Wow, you learn something new everyday!
Speaking of words and pronunciations... I tried googling how to pronounce some of the Baskari names but couldn't come up with anything. I would really like to see how close (or far off) I am saying my characters' names in my head as compared to the valid pronunciation. Any tips in that area?
