Dearest Father,
Wilmot and I have arrived safely in Lawley fiefdom, despite his predictions that we'd encounter ruffians on the road. I suppose we didn't appear to be worth the effort, what with our traveling lightly. There was a brawl at the inn we stayed at on the way, but we managed to keep to our rooms – the only thing damaged was our chance at a full night's sleep.
I'm afraid the missive you sent Lady Katherine regarding my visit must not have been properly delivered, as my arrival was regarded as something of a surprise. I'm afraid I may not have cut the best of first impressions – Lady Elena's personal servant seemed to think I was a beggar – perhaps I should take Isobel's critique of my clothing more to heart!
The Lawley family's hospitality has been without flaw, however. Lord Darien seems quite the charming sort (yes, I know you don't approve of him, but he's yet to do anything to offend me!), Lady Katherine... has quite the presence, and Lady Elena is a most intriguing young woman – and a literate one at that! Whilst there I found myself being treated less as a diplomatic guest and more in the manner of a suitor. Am I right in assuming your purposes in sending me to Lawley included the courting of Elena? And before you ask, yes, I did deliver the letter you gave me unto Lady Katherine, and no, I didn't read it (though I suspect Wilmot did).
If I am set to court Lady Elena, I can't claim to be entirely averse to the idea. She is intelligent, practical, and well-read, in addition to being of a most poetic appearance. I shant write too much of her now, though, lest I prove unable to stop.
Give my affectionate regards to Isobel, Rachel, and the twins.
(Wilmot sends his greetings as well.)
Your son,
~Julian
