The TIE Avenger was a refined variant of Darth Vader’s prototype TIE Advanced x1, and is often referred to as an Advanced x2. Sporting the same sort of bent radiator panels as the x1, it has the middle section of the radiator panels cropped both front and back to create the dagger-like points found in Interceptor radiator panels. It also sports a much wider central chassis than a normal TIE, another throwback to the x1, including the elongated viewport.
The Avenger was designed around the time of the Battle of Hoth and proved to be very successful, sporting four laser cannons, at the tip of each wing panel, as well as a multi-purpose launcher at the sides of the cockpit. Featuring new Novaldex shields and a hyperdrive unit, the Avenger also featured new high-output twin ion engines and a new maneuvering jet network, allowing for improved agility over the standard TIE/ln Fighter. All in all, the new fighter was powerful and deadly. However, it also cost far more than the Empire was used to in a starfighter. So when a rival SFS team unveiled the Interceptor, designed using the same data from the x1, and similar systems to the Avenger, it was selected for mass-production.
The Avenger is an incredibly capable ship, able to maneuver better than an X-Wing, far better, and greatly exceed an X-Wing’s maximum acceleration. It also sported nearly the same armaments, especially with the warhead launcher configured to proton torpedoes, but the four cannons were a new high-power variant that put out roughly 15% more power shot-for-shot. However, the Avenger suffers from middle-child syndrome out of its direct family, with the Interceptor being known far more due to its proliferation, and the Defender far better known due to its overall better capabilities.
