The horse method

That's awesome! I wish I had a horse so I could do that! When I was actively racing and coursing my greyhound, in addition to letting him run as much as possible, I did roadwork to build stamina. A few of us would gather at a dirt track. We'd pop open the back of a van or truck, one of us would drive, and the others would sit on the back and hold the leashes. The greyhounds would trot behind us. The leash-handler's responsibility was to make sure the dogs didn't get tangled or too tired. The driver would follow the leash-handler's instructions as to speed. We'd usually do a few laps at a slow trot (I think it was about 7 mph). And assuming we were working young, healthy dogs, we'd slowly speed up until they were in a good solid canter. Surprisingly to me, the dogs LOVED it!!! They got all excited whenever we arrived, even though we were just driving around in big circles.

Funny you should say that, we also do this on quiet back roads. I sit on the tailgate with my O/H driving, in the fields or on the beach I just let them run free some times where safe flooring the truck and giving them a good gallop. Like you say they absolutely love it, I have a treadmill that I hope to modify for use with the dogs. It will be useful when bringing them back from injuries.

This is my Adel. Adel is a Turkmen type Saluki (or Tazy, as they call them). I simply let her out of our house. She loves to run in circles. There is a chance to catch a rabbit, but usually rabbits are hiding during day time. I am sorry, could not get rid off some junk coming along with the picture.
