Farouq opening the door At first he could only come in the way but within a few days he figured out how pull the handle then the door towards him.

Ha! That is why we only have round door knobs, no lever-shaped ones:) A couple of my dogs will use their toes to open the dog gate into our bedroom once it's unlatched; they poke their toes through the mesh of the gate and pull it towards them since it opens inward.
Smart dogs are fun.

They certainly keep us entertained thats for sure. My other Saluki Tariq smacks the living room window with his paw to get our attention if he is ever shut out.
From what I hear Afghans are even more likely to figure things out like this than Salukis.

The Afghans are challenging dogs. Part of the fun for them is in the 'figuring out', so even removing the potential reward (like taking everything portable off the kitchen counter) will not necessarily deter them from getting into things and being naughty. They are also excellent climbers and jumpers and good at figuring out which latches can be manipulated by paws or opened by jumping on the gate.
A few years ago one of my male Halfghans managed to get into a three foot high puppy pen I had against the side of the house. This pen had a hinged top on it, so only a two by four foot space was open. I don't know how he got in there but I stood and watched him for a minute while he looked all round the pen and inspected the side of the house, then, instead of jumping or climbing over the side he leapt up five feet high against the side of the house, pushed off of it with his hind legs and over the side of the pen he went.
I woke up one morning with one of his sisters on the roof. Took me two more days to figure out how she was getting up there and block the route.

My salukis aren't bothered with things like that! They are happy with two good runs a day they eat and then go to sleep! Spook did have a hard life before I got him so I think he is happy to be warm dry and comfortable! My lurcher opens all the cupboards and doors. He, like tha Afgans doesn't need the reward he just seems enjoy doing it. he does it every morning we go to work. Maybe breaks the bordom.
That may be the quarter saluki bit in him coming out :HMMMMM:
