Title: sighthounds, break too easy

savy - May 2, 2008 10:40 PM (GMT)
Not been able to walk my dogs for a week and a half the lurhcer tore his chest open chasing a deer :o and his knee, then the saluki cross tore his side so they are both stitiched up! The lurcher gets his stitches out in the morning but now has Kennel cough  the only one fit is my older saluki girl who is too scared to go out in the woods without her back up  so I am really missing my walk over the moors and through the woods. I wish the didn't break so easy!! Just been letting them have a little run that was until the KC hit

Is there any muscle/tendon/ligament damage?

This is why I'll only keep Salukis now, I also do all my dogs stitching up myself and have a portamag and laser unit from treating knocks, tears sprains etc.

I'll only go to a vet for actual surgery and even then it must be a greyhound vet. For the most injuries good rest is all that is needed.

Hope they make a speedy recovery.

No thankfully the knee injury was the skin the chest went through the muscle! Savy had three cruciate ops wouldn't want to go through that again!
I love my vet he is the best! Better then the greyhound vet near me. I met through my friends that are vets and work at the greyhound track! :D
must save you loads of money being able to treat most injuries yourself

The laser unit cost me £250 secondhand and the portamag £150, both reduce recovery time almost by half so it's money well spent, the most injuries simply don't need veterinary treatment, rest is the only treatment needed in most cases.

Most rips will heal fine on there own so long the dog is fit and healthy, I've never any infections develop from rips I've treat without antibiotic. In most cases painkillers are not needed either they simply mask pain which is there for good reason to stop the dog from causing further injury and there protect the injury, swelling is also the bodies natural way of protecting the injured area while the body sets about healing its self.

Both the portamag and the laser unit work with the bodies natural healing processes simply increasing blood flow to the injury site allowing for faster cell repair and damage/waste removal.

I do almost all my own vet care including sutures but it's not really to save money. We live very far out and it's just easier to do it myself than make the two hour drive to the vet for something simple like stitches. My vet is very good about giving me information over the phone so I don't need to go in unless necessary.

I find the wounds heal very well when stitched and doesn't take as long as it would if I left it. My lurcher was in a mess his chest was torm open skin and muscle, 11 days later his stitches are out and he has completely healed! I don't give them AB they have the wound flushed out and stitched and that is it!
My dogs are very fit and fortunately they haven't had any muscle injuries or the like! Savannah's cruciate went because she had an AI disease attacking her joints, damaging the cruciate! I know a lot of working people glue wounds and it works fine, I prefer stitched when the wounds are bad enough!

Without doubt they heal faster when stitched, I'll always stitch if can, certain areas you just can't get away with stitching and you have no choice but to leave it to nature and the laser ;) .

I find my saluki skin is way tougher than our lurchers, epecially the beardieX, her skin is like paper and has had some cracking rips over the years

It's good that you have a vet that you happy with, good running dog vets are as rare as hens teeth.

Keep them fit, good food, good exercise and good rest and they pretty much look after themselves, you done really well with Savannah considering her problems it can't have been easy for you.

I have kept Greyhounds and their skin seems to tear easily, one little ding and you end up with a huge hole. The coats on the Afghans definitely protects the skin quite well. I only do enough stitches to help wounds heal faster; I keep superglue on hand but always forget about using it! I know people who use staples but the only time I've had a dog with staples in she ripped them all out immediately, luckily she had internal sutures as it was a spay incision due to pyometra and quite long.

A good vet who will work with you is worth his weight in gold. Here in the US you have to be careful because more and more of the younger vets are very against breeding of any kind.

I am very lucky with my vet and I work at the vet school so found a good specialist for savy, which I am sure is the only reason she is still alive and doing so well. I do worry about my vet retireing as he is in his 50's :o
