Title: How did you first get involved...
Description: With Oriental/Eastern Sighthounds

Saluki - April 30, 2008 09:22 PM (GMT)
Where did your interest in these Sighthounds first start?

For me I started out hunting with lurchers, I was told by many lurchermen to stay away from Saluki bred Lurchers of course this only made me more interested as to why they disliked salukis so much and quickly became very interested in Saluki type sighthounds. I Thought to myself that any dog has remained unchanged for thousands of years in such a harsh environment, has to be as good as it gets.

At the same time I was struggling with injury after injury with my lurchers. So I started looking into getting a saluki after reading about how tough they are. I was home checked for a rescue Saluki but within a few weeks, I was told about someone who had a Saluki in a neighbouring village and that it was being badly treated, I managed to get the Saluki a 3 year dog he was everything I ever wanted in a dog. From then on I was totally hooked on them.

I'd love to hear how everyone on here first became with these sighthounds.

when i was a boy and i suppose this will apply to a lot of people in the town i lived in there was a paticular strain of lurcher commonly known in the welsh valleys as the black stuff brilliant rabbit dogs day or night but what i noticed about em they couldnt kill hares consistantly and they wouldnt take foxes day or night single handed when i was a kid i was out day and night most every day and night and listening to different people talking all the time about how dull salukis were and dont touch one for any money my old man once said how would they know about a saluki when theve never seen one let alone seen one run well i started going off lamping and coursing with a bloke when i was a teenager and he only run saluki cross dogs and to me that took lurcher work to a whole new level from that time till present time i would never entertain a dog with out saluki blood in it i personally get very annoyed when i hear people slagging salukis and saying how dull they are to me from a hunting point of view i think they are one of the most intelligent dogs you could find

I started with lurchers over 20 years ago, just doing rabbits and lamping. I then joined a coursing club with my lurchers and soon realised after a couple of races we were back in the car. After seeing a salukicross run in our coursing club, it wasn't long before I bought a salukicross pup. That was 19 years ago! Ever since that's all I've coursed with is salukicrosses. Until 18 month ago I bought a pure saluki bitch (Bonnie) from Mark (Saluki on this site). She is a joy to have and hopefully her pups will have the same temperament as her.
I'll ring you Mark when Bonnie has pups (two weeks).

I don't work my dogs so not that interesting I suppose!
I bought my first hound, saluki/greyound of travellers! She was a sicky pup and only lived for 18mths. She was a wonderful dog! I then got a red/black fringed saluki from a rescue. He was my first male dog and was a dream. I adopted, a couple years later, a desert bred white smoothe saluki! When my red boy died I adopted the black mainly saluki cross and then rescued a lurcher with quarter saluki in him(though not obvious) from a shed. That is me and my hounds!

Have you got homes lined up for the pups?

DeviodOvTalent - May 3, 2008 09:20 PM (GMT)
My main breed is Afghans and I have been keeping them for over a decade. Salukis not so long. I started out with conformation showing but had a break with that line of thinking some years ago. My dogs don't 'work' but they do get to chase things besides plastic bags. I am going to try lamping one of these days:)

I think the main appeal for me is a combination of aesthetics and temperament. They are entertaining to watch since they are clever dogs and beautiful as well.

Hi Savy, I've got 2 maybe 3 definate homes for the pups. I'm keeping a bitch for myself. 1 of the pups is going up scotland (maybe 2 if Mark wants one). I'll keep everybody informed when Bonnie has them.
Cheers Owen

Keep us posted with the updated, I'd love to see some recent pics of Bonnie (pre goat shape lol).

Savy get your name down if you want one, I'll vouch for you being as good a home as any you'll find :Good: Just be prepared to be carrying deer home lol.

I can't say for sure yet not sure if I will have free cash to buy one right now as Oh is self employed and has been off for a bit due to a knee op! So will have to see how it goes and if any pups are left!
Need to have a talk with the local deer population to stay away! :ph43r:
Would love to see pictures of the parents?

I am a newbie to salukis but utterly converted!

I have always had terriers, parsons, patterdales and borders but recently started to look for a lurcher, deerhound cross in mind. Fortunately friends showed me what I was missing and now have two four month old pups.

Something the deer population here will soon find out about

shouldn't steal my horses grass then should they??
