Title: The Mascot Concept You Asked Me For...
Description: (Although it may all be for naught)
Clovis15 - June 15, 2005 07:48 AM (GMT)
Clovis Dye here, you might remember me as the Luffy-Guy.
I know this it a few days late as I originally promised it for Friday of last week, not that is seems to matter as it looks like (from looking at other threads in this section) that you already have everything you need at this point. Here it is, the uncolored version. Do remember that, despite the irrelevancy of this now, that many changes can be made in digital inking without redrawing a new image.

alittle too cartoony for my tasty. It's nice don't get me wrong somthing just isn't right.... Sorry if thats mean just my opinion.
narultimatehero - June 15, 2005 12:20 PM (GMT)
So this is an idea for a mascot? Nah, IT's too generic. Doesn't stand out in the crowd. How about having a Katamari ball covered with anipunch stuff, or just an anipunch katamari?
Kaisermikeb - June 15, 2005 04:28 PM (GMT)
I'm going to say miss on this one. Too goofy looking. Sorry.
Clovis15 - June 15, 2005 06:49 PM (GMT)
Then it's a good thing you already had a mascot before you even asked me to try. I guess this means I won't have to spend time revising and redrawing from scratch since you already have one. I was perfectly willing to get what you wanted over a series of iterations as agreed upon at Mirror Lake, the only thing that upsets me is not your comments but the fact you already had one when you said you didn't. If you need anything else, and don't already have one locked in, don't hesitate to contact me again.
Kaisermikeb - June 15, 2005 09:24 PM (GMT)
At the time we talked at mirror lake I told you there were several other people working on the mascot.
Someone else finished their designs first, and they were pretty good so I liked them. Eventually we will update the site with the profiles of the mascots, and as this is an open source con, anyone is welcome to do a version of our darling karate girls, and if it's good we'll find a place to use it. Until then, draw whatever you want to!
narultimatehero - June 15, 2005 11:22 PM (GMT)
I think th mascot now is nice. She's kinda got that Chun-Lee look. :)
Clovis15 - June 16, 2005 02:56 AM (GMT)
I guess I should make a point of stating that I'm actually not bitter here, or at least no where near as bitter as it sounded rereading that comment. I don't feel that I wasted my time here, actually. But that girl on the front page was there after our first talk, but before mirror lake. I'm not upset, it's just that facts aren't quite matching up here. So I'm going to chock it up to a failure of communications between planners that got resolved after Mirror Lake.

I'm a little interested in the "karate girls" since the t-shirt idea seems to have been left to the wayside hahaha - is there a reference or at least requirements? Its summer and I need to try to keep up with drawing :)
Kaisermikeb - June 16, 2005 05:29 PM (GMT)
Clovis: The girl on the website is NOT our mascot. She is a filler
Kill Pan: The Tee Shirt Idea will still happen, but there are some other things to take care of first, and we still need someone to manage it!
Right now our house artist is working on some final cuts of our mascots, and as soon as they are ready we will put up the criteria for using them on the website, along with a little back story maybe. We'll also need names.
Kill Pan - June 17, 2005 05:25 AM (GMT)
Oh ok about the t-shirts (and cool! something I bring up actually put to use, that's one of the first that a con has actually had consideration, thanks! :D) Also, so you already have an artist doing the karate girls? Oh well that's a shame (for me hehe) but I can't wait to see them! :D
Kaisermikeb - June 17, 2005 09:59 PM (GMT)
Like I said, if you draw it we will use it! I'd love to see your drawings!
Kill Pan - June 18, 2005 05:57 AM (GMT)
Really? Well.. are there any discription on the karate girls so I can take a stab? (or is it purely interpretational?)
Kaisermikeb - June 18, 2005 06:50 AM (GMT)
Right now we have two girls. They are sisters, one is older, with long dark hair, usually in a pony tail. She is mature and a little on the quiet side. Probably age 19. The younger one is around 11 or 12, brown pigtails, energetic and happy. Together they will destroy you!
Kill Pan - June 18, 2005 11:42 PM (GMT)
Ok I don't know if you'd even be interested in this (it may not be up to your standards -_-;;) But I sketched this (it's obviously very messy because I don't want to spend too much time on something for naught :D) Anyway, take a peek and if your interested I can clean it up and colour it, but if not there are obviously no hard feelings!
Karate Sisters
Kaisermikeb - June 19, 2005 01:23 AM (GMT)
those arn't actually too far off model! I like them a lot! We'll add them to the soup!
BTW, are you a boy or a girl, Kill Pan?
Kill Pan - June 19, 2005 05:52 AM (GMT)
Wow really? Cool! Should I fix them up them?
BTW... do you think I'm a boy or a girl? :D
Kaisermikeb - June 19, 2005 07:25 AM (GMT)
Using my awesome student directory skills, Megan, I've found you! You had to challenge me didn't you! I was going to call you, but it's like 3:30 AM. Anyhow, you're pictures are awesome and also kind of hot.
If you were a guy I would ask if you wanted to do some more ecchi type stuff, but you don't have to! I'm not sure it's a good idea to do that to our mascots in the second year anyhow!
Kill Pan - June 19, 2005 10:15 PM (GMT)
Wow, I'm totally creeped out! How did you find me you tricky bastard? XD~ I do like to provide a challange, but you are a clever one. How would you call me at 3:30AM anyway? I don't have my phone number listed anywhere o_o;
Also... how the hell did you find "pictures"? I only showed you one! I'm glad you like them though! What kind of ecchi stuff did you have in mind?
wildkat137 - June 20, 2005 03:05 PM (GMT)
Hi everyone! I just wanted to let everyone know that the mascot girls are done, and I've put up their character drawings on deviantart.
http://www.deviantart.com/view/19669061/There are more drawings of them comming soon! I can't wait to see what people think. :D
Clovis15 - June 28, 2005 08:39 PM (GMT)
Not that any of you care, but I finished the image. So here is the completed version (not that I think any of you care to see it).
http://www.geocities.com/ultrapub/Karate_Girl.png (that will work if you cut and paste it into the URL bar to avoid their link prevention methods)
No, this isn't the prescribed color scheme, but since you didn't want it I was free to color it whatever I wanted to. From here on out I just need to create a background for when I upload it to Deviantart for myself.

Stop wallowing in self-pity, Clovis. I can barely stand it. Your drawing looks fine, and you already heard Mike say that the girl on the website is just a stand-in. Just finish the background, and it'll be pretty enough for website display.
Kaisermikeb - June 29, 2005 01:03 AM (GMT)
yeah, it does look better with color, although it's still too cutesey. This isn't a cutesy con full of giggles, smiles, and strawberries
This is an edgy, gritty con, full of meaningless battles, high attrition, death, dirt, and the shattered carcuses of our once beloved innocense!
If you don't mind trying again, I'd like to see your take on the mascot. Use wildcats as a reference though, those are the official models of the mascot.
OH YEAH:
We are working on the new webdesign, and need art! To our two official artists, and any aspiring ones, now is the time to start pumping us with your art!!
Clovis15 - June 29, 2005 01:35 AM (GMT)
I could try again, but I completely fail to understand what you want when this qualifies as edgy and gritty:
http://www.deviantart.com/view/19669061/ (as for the color scheme, color scheme can easily be changed in under a minute with Flash). I could draw something based off of those designs, but there is nothing either edgy or gritty about them. The shown image is even less combatative the one I drew. I now see what you mean by when you told me your descriptions of what you wanted would cause me pain as I can't understand you as you predicted would happen.
To Narutimate... I was not wallowing in self pity. And I'm not finishing this for website display. Ever since it got rejected I've been finishing it however I've wanted to (which was the cause of the current color scheme). I merely wanted to see if people would change their opinion of how bad they previously claimed it was when they saw it finished. If I seem upset, it's because I'm trying to figure out how wildcat's image is either edgy or gritty.
Kaisermikeb - June 29, 2005 05:46 AM (GMT)
Clovis:
1) don't argue with naru... there's no point, it's better just to ignore it!
2) they style is too silly and rounded. Kat's pictures have a certain dryness/ sadness/ seriousness/ something I can't put my finger on to them. Megs have a rough design and a forboding, as you see the cold, hollow, jaded karate girl contrasted to her younger sister who has yet to be (but surely will be) broken by the harsh realities of her existance. (note, I am reading way too deep into this stuff)
Mainly it's a style thing.
This has grit
http://www.fivestarusa.com/web/images/6380.jpgThis does not
http://shounen.ru/img/tsfs.jpgKayura had edge
http://www.absoluteanime.com/ronin_warriors/kayura.jpgMeow doesnt
http://www.absoluteanime.com/carried_by_the_wind/_meow.jpgBasically grit is like the atmosphere. In a gritty world there are more sad endings than happy ones. If there are any good guys at all, they tend not to win all that much, and the people who try to stay uninvolved still suffer anyhow.
Edge is what you see on screen. Edge is killing a kid, or raping someone, or shooting a guy for no reason
Samurai Champloo has a lot of edge, Inu Yasha doesn't.
Akira is both gritty and edgy. It's a good model.
Does that clear anything up?
Clovis15 - July 3, 2005 01:14 AM (GMT)
I will look into and see if I can come up with something, but I may have to get someone else to do the coloring outside of Flash entirely if I do. I'm not promising another image at this point.
For those curious as to what I did with the other image, the final version with background is here:
