Title: Round one!
Description: Themes

Kaisermikeb - April 18, 2006 12:50 PM (GMT)
Are there any special themes for video rooms that you would like to see this year?

Last year we had two "Theme" rooms. One was a "kid-safe" room, in which anything that was shown didn't have much objectionable content (not necessarily kid-anime, but kid-safe at least). The other was a staff-picks room, where staff showed the stuff that we like, regardless of whether or not the majority of fans would appreciate it.

Would you like to see any of those come back?

Also, are there any particular trends you want our rooms to follow? Do you want blocks of genres? Do you want us to show you the stuff you all know and love? Do you want us to expose you to things you've never heard of before?

We want input from everyone, but if you're not going to watch anything no matter what then don't push to hard! Also, don't expect us to show a lot of stuff that you can see every day on TV.

Eh, sure..I'll make the first suggestion o.o; What about a theme room for like, the anime that got people into anime? Like, people can write down what anime actually got them into anime then you could like...show them in the room... I'll even volunteer to sort them out to see if anything has multiple votes and such o.o

I don't care if its not a good suggestion! shedep!

I love the idea of themed rooms on semi-random play (or audience pick) rather than a complete rigid set of showings. It seemed to work well for filler when we couldn't find what we were supposed to be showing at AP '06, and people had more fun with it that way.

For themes, we should definately do a Mindf*ck block, and a horror block would be cool too. Maybe some "uberkawaii" block with all the cute chibi stuff. And of course yuri, yaoi, and hentai blocks (emphasis on the yuri :-P). And bring back the staff picks, 'cuz it was fun.

SSJ Jup81 - April 21, 2006 02:37 AM (GMT)
The horror thing could work. You could show stuff like Hellsing for it. That aside, I like Vincent's idea about letting the attendees vote on what got them into anime in the first place, and I guess whichever anime gets the most votes, wins...unless it's Dragon Ball Z. :P

How about a Retro Anime type theme set-up for one of the video rooms where you only show anime from the 70s/80s/early 90s?

For another theme, how about something dealing with just Mahou-based anime. Mahou Sensei Negima should be out round about this time next year, so you could even show that. lol

Vincent - April 21, 2006 06:35 AM (GMT)
Heres an idea. FFVII AC comes out on DVD the 25th. We could have a room showing that. (Granted most people will have seen it by then, some like me have already seen it subbed, but some people may still want to see it!)

Oyaji - April 21, 2006 11:23 PM (GMT)
I've been toying with an idea that may be worth expanding...I really wanted to have an AMV room party next year. 3 or 4 hours of AMVs I've got on DVDs on a regular hotel room TV on Friday night. I'm even looking into snacks.

Perhaps others could help sponsor various 'blocks' of time on a schedule in the same room...like the guy that showed other cartoons Sunday AM or others that show off their own favorite anime or other related shows. Call it 'The Never-Ending Room Party' or something like that and have it run throughout the con.

(There may be a fine line between this and the con suite, but having fan-run videos would be the primary focus instead of BS space.)

For you. I'd like to thank you, John, for being the only staffer who actually sent me picks and descriptions. Now we came up with the idea late and I didn't really get on people about it. I actually like the staff picks idea, but I'm not sure about a dedicated staff picks room. The thing is, whether something's a staff pick is orthogonal to everything else. This was an issue when scheduling the kid-safe room. There was stuff I put in kid-safe that was really important to me, in a staff picks sort of way. But I needed to put something in that room. Having a room labelled "staff picks" kind of implied that we didn't care as much about the stuff in the other rooms, but that certainly wasn't true. As Mike said at some point, we're not going to show anything we won't stand behind.

I think next year, we should mark shows as being staff picks in the program guide. We would still have descriptions written by staffers indicating why the show was personally meaningful to them and why people need to see it. There just wouldn't be a single room dedicated to stuff we care about. We care abvout alll of it.

okay, i totally vote for the Kid Safe room back, because my little sister spent ages in that room and it was mostly a surefire way to find her whenever she ran off. xD; plus, some of the shows there were pretty interesting (akazukin chacha! xD!!). i didn't get to spend much time in any of the video rooms, but having the Staff Picks marked and described would probably help people out, ya. x] i liked the idea of the Documentary room, but i think the one time i checked it out the sound wasn't on. D: blah!

Vincent - April 23, 2006 06:21 PM (GMT)
My MOM spent like, ALL of saturday in that one room watching the one about the pink goldfish or whaever, I never watched it. lol. I think crispin and Joshua had a real impact on here. As soon as we got home she went on Ebay and bought a wolfs rain DVD o.o OMG my mom likes anime!!! IT BURNS!!!!

Je_suis_moi - April 24, 2006 02:48 AM (GMT)
I liked the Bad Anime room. (Of course, at first I thought it meant, like, naughty...) It was really funny - Dan Aykroyd, lol - but I think that the people in the room were more amusing than the anime.

I also liked the Staff Pic - I got to see, "Voices of a Distant Star," which I've wanted to see for a while. (I almost cried afterwards...it was soo sad.)

What I think would be neat: A block for Miyazaki films. All five hundred.

If you liked Voices, wait till you see Gunbuster! You will cry!

Also, Miyazaki movies tend to be owned by Disney, which puts them out of our reach, though we did show Future Boy Conan, the TV series Miyazaki made that most of his other movies take from heavily. Next year we might go ahead and show Castle of Cagliostro too, the Lupin movie he directed.

I had an idea for a video room this morning, and actually Oyaji seems to have beat me to the punch on this one! My idea was to have a hotel room dedicated to fan-favorites, the stuff that everyone has seen. It could show stuff like Gundam Wing, Gravitation, Eva, Trigun, etc. So, rather than being a place to go and check out a new anime and watch quietly and respectfully, it would be a rally for fans of the show to joke about, get to know each other, and hang out! This could easily be mixed with Oyaji's idea, and in fact probably should be because I'm not sure we could find 54 hours worth of universal fan favorites!

wolf - April 27, 2006 02:49 AM (GMT)
CLAMP room would be a good idea since I know a lot of people that love CLAMP anime.

Bad anime room and audience pics should return.

I think we should have a live action japanese cinema room with things such as Ringu, Tokyo Babylon live action, Sailor Moon, Power Rangers (Japanese version, we could do american as well) etc.

Kaisermikeb - April 27, 2006 03:39 AM (GMT)
and the first person to miss the "don't say live action" sign is...
Wolf!! Congradulations!

I'm not sure there is enough clamp for a full room dedicated to it, but we can definatly work more in!

CLAMP School, Card Captor Sakura, X (TV + movie + music video), RG Veda, Rayearth, XXXholic (TV + movie), Tsubasa Chronicle, Tokyo Babylon, Wish, Ducalion (was this animated? I'm not sure)... I'd say there's enough for a dedicated CLAMP room.

The question is whether or not it's a good idea. And I'd say outside of having it to honor CLAMP as our first Japanese guest - and before the rumor train gets out of hand, we do NOT have CLAMP as guests for AP 2007! - then I'd say no. There is so much good anime that we couldn't show as a result it just doesn't justify it.

Kaisermikeb - May 18, 2006 11:01 AM (GMT)
heh, if we were going to have a room dedicated to a studio, it would be Gainax!

Plus I would like to have a Leji-room, dedicated to the Lejiverse and all its glories!

Any non-studio oriented suggestions?

SSJ Jup81 - May 18, 2006 06:47 PM (GMT)
WISH has an anime? I've read the manga, didn't know there was an anime for it. How is it in comparison to the manga? Hmm, another studio...my mind is currently blank. How about some Toei anime type thing? *Shrugs*

Oh wait, non-studio...how about...a nice "fluffy anime" type room or something. :screem: I dunno.

Kaisermikeb - May 19, 2006 04:42 AM (GMT)
By fluffy anime do you mean like "Fluff-anime" as in anime that is kind of bland and not very deep, like Gatekeepers, World of Narue, or Straweberry eggs... or like happy light anime like Snow Fairy Sugar, Piano, Angelic Layer?

rpb3000 - May 19, 2006 09:59 PM (GMT)
Akazukin ChaCha room!

..j/k. But it'd be nice to see it in the lineup.

I was thinking "happy light" stuff. Obviously, my mind's a total blank on suggestions. ><

Maybe have some mid level things, like for 16+ but not 18+ only material.

"Don't Call Me a Superhero: An Ontological Overview of the Evolution of Magical Girl Anime."

Chris would go bonkers for it.

Kaisermikeb - May 22, 2006 10:14 PM (GMT)
Hell, *I'm* interested in that!

I finally ran out of Creamy Mami this afternoon...
