You may first want to consider what character you would like to cosplay. Limiting a list of characters and finding refrence pictures will be able to help you to start to gather information on the type of clothing and material you would need for the costume. Then I suggest on going to Cosplay.com and sign up for their forums. They are awsome people over there. They will help beginners such as your self.

1. what cosplays do you want to do
2. money to work with
3. time?
4. will this be comfortable
5. is it at you skill level (meaning not to hard to make)
6. can you get any help sewing the costume
7. fits in the rules
( not really directed torwards this con, but other cons.)

what are you wondering about, I will try to help you. ^_^

haha, this is going to sound so lame, but there's a 'sewing for dummies' book out there and it tells how to do a lot of basic stuff like hemming, putting in zippers, etc...that i don't even think about anymore but that when i first started i had no idea how to do. you can probably get it out of your local public library for free.

also, i agree with everyone else, too. if you know what you want to cosplay, you will be able to narrow down the sewing techniques that you have to learn for that particular cosplay. so you won't spend a ton of time learning things that you don't need at first.

good luck!! ^_^

If your still doing who you told me you were doing, I can help you with parts of it if you'd like, just trying to get your family to be ok with the whole thing is another story.
