Title: Microwaves
Description: To be more specific: The lack thereof
Kuroshi - March 27, 2006 05:22 PM (GMT)
Since cheap and easy food is always a bonus at conventions, I emailed the hotel asking if any/all the rooms had microwaves in them.
They don't :(
It just so happens that there's a spare, portable, plug-in-the-wall microwave oven sitting in my basement. I was wondering if I should bring that, if there would perhaps be a public place to put it for the good of all (In a hallway or room for people), and whether or not the hotel would yell at me for bringing it.
They sell these microwave-in-the-bag rice dishes nowadays, just open the bag a slit and nuke for 90 seconds, and voila, a meal. Relatively cheap, and good confood.
Plus then any other microwavable goodies people care to bring along (I have several microwave-safe pots, useful for Minute Rice and ramen)

You could of used a coffee pot. They work just as well for making certain dishes, and I'm bringing my moms Crock Pot (if she lets me) to make Rice.

Most hotels do not offer Microwaves in rooms.
The coffee Pot is your best friend in this case. There are many things you can make.
I will try to make a list.
Food:
Steamed rice
Miso soup
Ramune
Rice balls
egg drop soup
Udon
Canned soup
instant meals/food.
Tea (drink)
Coffee (Drink)
Other than those, I think you might be able to find more ideas here at
Cosplay.com's eating and conventions thread.

-Ramen
-Udon
-Miso
-Canned soup (like chicken noodle, where you add 1 part water to 1 part soup)
-Instant oatmeal
Then the food that Mishi said, and then, if you have a small frying pan, that fits on a normal size coffee heater-we do so nee!- bring that and like, a cooler with alot of food and ice.
Then, if you have a electric frying pan, go ahead and bring that, or a croc pot for making rice.
So many possiblities.

You make Ramune in a coffee pot?
Isn't that a soda?
But again, I restate that I have a portable microwave that I could bring.
EnishiYukishirolover - March 27, 2006 08:17 PM (GMT)
The problem though with portable microwaves, is the fact that you are trying not to let the hotel know that you are bringing one.
~Let them see it, they may charge you more~

Hm...
...
...
Idea: If there's a consuite, we can put it in there! Then it's perfectly set up for the good of the whole convention, and there's less reason for the hotel to whine at us about it.
EnishiYukishirolover - March 27, 2006 08:23 PM (GMT)
That may work, but I'm still saying Coffee Pots
Kuroshi - March 27, 2006 08:33 PM (GMT)
Bah *goes to email hotel*
(Mental note to self when I reread t his thread in a few hours, check the gmail account)
Mishikotoko - March 27, 2006 09:20 PM (GMT)
EnishiYukishirolover I said all but instant oatmeal in that...lol
Kuroshi, there is a drink called Ramune, and a food called it as well. ^_^
If you like Rice, they cant really say much about a rice cooker.
As for a microwave, they can say no.
Either of those you would want to keep from the hotel though.

I wonder how much a hot plate costs. I have a kettle and a bamboo steamer. lol It would be cheaper to eat something like Ramen and instant soups as opposed to the stuff those restaurants have (I saw those prices ><). My cousin, when he saw it, was like, "Okay, where's McDonald's 0.99 menu?" lol
I know for Friday, we were going to just order a pizza. Hadn't thought about the other days much, like Thursday night after we get there.
Edit: Hey, do the rooms have a mini-fridge? If so, I could just bring cold-cuts and make sandwiches during my time there. Ooo, just think of all the money that'll be saved if I do that. :hippy:

I doubt they have a mini fridge.
Most do not, but a cooler isn't a bad idea.

Yeah, you're right. I doubt they would have it. A couple of years ago, I had to go to an NEA Convention, and the room we had didn't have a fridge. Just a television, beds, and I think one of those ice-buckets.
Guess I should just bring a small cooler. Then again, I should ask my cousin what he thinks too.
Even if he doesn't want to, I still want a hot-plate so I can heat up water for Ramen and I have re-useable chop-sticks, so that's cool too. lol

The only hotel rooms that do have microwaves generally are the "suites" or deluxe rooms at hotels. The Drury Inn at Ohayo Con was great about this. I highly recommend if anyone has a chance to get a suite for a con the next time, to do so. But if you only have 4 people staying in a room, it's not worth it.
SSJ Jup81 - March 27, 2006 11:51 PM (GMT)
Yeah, that is true. Guess it would be a bit pointless to get such a big room for just 4 people, unless you're just rich or something.
Kuroshi - March 27, 2006 11:54 PM (GMT)
That's why you get 10 people in the room, like any sensible otaku would do, silly.

I had 7 at Ohayo Con. I was suppose to have more, but two backed out. But it worked out to be about 40 bucks per person for the weekend.
Miccy - March 28, 2006 12:39 AM (GMT)
The rooms at Ohaycon had thems. ^^ We made popcorn. <33
But I'm bringing pop-tarts..(Like 3 boxes) so I should be good. ^^
EnishiYukishirolover - March 29, 2006 01:31 PM (GMT)
We made a basket of food that we're taking with us
