Title: puppet show

Thinking about Punch and Judy, I had a (quite brilliant) thought: Why don't we do reenactments of anime with hand puppets? Of course, one anime lept to mind as eminently suitable for puppetization. So, my idea, for your consideration: Evangelion: The Puppet Instrumentality Project.

My thinking is that the scene in End of Eva right before the Third Impact with Shinji yelling at Asuka not to reject him would make damn good puppet theater, and we could . It would be a fairly instrumentality-centric show (as puppets would fit pretty well into the instrumentality experiences of the movie and the TV ending), though I'm imagining a hyper ultra-fast recap of the series at the beginning (with puppet-mecha fighting action!).

This is not a joke; I'm really seeing this in my head right now. And it's cool.

I'm for it! So whose going to be the puppet master?

We also need a list of recognizable yet puppet friendly scenes!

Maybe all of them should involve dramatic stranglings... like Lain vs Anti-Lain!

Just to let everyone know, it looks like I may have access to a puppet stage and a person or two who know something about puppets. I'm still in research mode. (Apparently Jan Svankmajer made a short based on Punch and Judy.... Obviously, this is something I need to see.)

Generally right now I'm thinking glove puppets. We probably don't need or even want real mouths. (GAINAX obviously didn't think moving lips were that important, why should we?)

I don't have any objection to expanding beyond Eva (though more characters means more puppets). I'd still like to use Instrumentality as a frame story. We could show the instrumentality experiences of other random anime characters, as episode 26 tells us it was only focusing on Shinji, rather than the entire human race, due to time constraints.

(It seems like traditional puppet plays generally grew in a weird organic way, adding miscellaneous characters over time.)

Whose to say the puppets can't play multiple characters - as long as they aren't too detailed, you could also mock the generic-ness that some characters suffer from. Poor Ikari Shinji just screams boring-heavily-copied-character-design.
