Title: New Plush - Sephiroth

kalajessta - March 5, 2006 06:36 AM (GMT)
He's a be-lated birthday present for Ayaji-chan, but he's finally completed. He took a little longer then expected to do, but his trench coat is removable! All the buckles where painted with puffy paint. I love puffy paint now for detailed work.

I don't like FF, but even I have to pity that poor thing. The hell is his hair made of?

kalajessta - March 5, 2006 02:32 PM (GMT)
It's called fun fur. And if you don't like FF, you shouldn't have spam in this thread.

ookami-san - March 5, 2006 04:52 PM (GMT)
i think its kinda cute. constructive critisisim(sp) ithink i might have looked better if you drew in the eyes insted of useing buttons and maybe used a different matterial for the hair. but other than that its fantastic.
Hey ever tried to make a Cloud.

Sup, Kala?
I believe that your Sephiroth doll is enough to even kill Mrs. Sephiroth's fandom boner.

:D

I agree with ookami-san with the eyes. Drawing them instead of sewing buttons to the face would give more of a character to the plush. Also, adding other features to the face (like the mouth or a little nose) would be a nice touch. Maybe using the same material for the hair as you used for the body would a good idea. Then again, I don't know how to make plushies, so whatever material is easier to use is up to you. ^^

Other than that, the plush seems well made. Good job! :) And just out of curiosity ... what materials do you use to make the plush? I might make one myself. xD

The button eyes are my trade mark. Every plush artist that I've talked to agree that is my trademark for this style plush. Drawing them on along with the nose would ruin the "plush" appearence of that style. If I did the typical UFO plush, then I would draw/iron-on the face/eyes.

For ideas, or free patterns, there are plenty of links on www.ufocatcher.com. They have a wonderful forum filled with fellow plush artist, along with my self to help guide you through your processes if you need help.

Secondly, the materials I used are:

Felt- For the body and clothing.
Hair- Fun Fur.
Eyes- Buttons
Detailed work- puffy paint.

Paliana - March 5, 2006 10:36 PM (GMT)
Ah, ok. Thanks for the link, I'll take a look ~

kalajessta - March 5, 2006 10:56 PM (GMT)
No problem. Also if you don't like any of those patterns, I suggest looking at books, or "copy" or disect an actual plush. An actual ufo catcher pattern is rather hard to come by that is easy to use. I still don't like the actual ufo catcher patterns because they are so difficult. That's why I choosed my own unique style.

It kind of reminds me of that weird kid who stalks Salad fingers that time he went searching for France (in a good way)

rpb3000 - March 7, 2006 12:47 AM (GMT)
I think this is one of your better plush, Kala ^_^ I'm not really too keen on your style (I don't like SD-plush really), but this one is like huggably cute.

LOL @ Mike. Salad Fingers is awesome.

Thanks! I'm dreading to make my second Sephiroth and second Cloud... I really wish I can do something other FFVII characters, but people keep requesting them.

I agree with Bob Saget. I've given better looking toys to my dog.

This may be the first time I've ever heard someone say "I agree with Bob Saget"

constructive critism perhaps - the pattern for the body looks like the one that my sister picked up at a pannel from nekocon 2004 ... I have that basic pattern sitting in a drawer somewhere. Its not that unique or that hard to make... but you deffinately need to work on it.

The eyes. Buttons may be your "trademark" but honey, they look like crap. It makes the whole thing look like it was put together by a five year old. Either find different buttons to use (maybe a smaller size) or try something else.

The hair - this is what really makes me look at this and go... wtf? That hair is really bad. You may think you're being unique in using that feather yard stuff, but don't. It looks ratty as all hell and detracts from the appearance of this thing even more (if possible...). I would stick to felt or fabric and stay away from yarns and string.

I can't really comment on the coat since I can't see it too well, but that looks so-so.

I would reccomend some more practice before asking people to buy them from you... because if someone asked me to buy that, I'd smile, probably walk away, and start laughing.

Thank you for your opinion, but your one of the many people that don't like my style. Secondly, I have been getting many commissions to be truthful. Some like my style, others don't. But I don't want to do typical UFO Catcher plush. There are so many other plush artist that do that style as it is.

I choose this style for a few reasons:

1. The body pattern is rather simple and very easy to make in a short time.
2. I and many others think the style is cute and unique from other plush artist that are out there.
3. I am rather new at plush making compaired to others. I've only been doing this for about a year and I'm always constantly trying to make new patterns and to improve my plushies.
4. The button eyes and hair are different from what others use. I try to be unique and different with everything I do.

But thank you for your opinion and I will keep it in mind for future plush making.

except that what you're using as a pattern isn't unique... its a basic plushie pattern that was handed out at pannels at cons...

I understand that you're a beginner... but taking a pattern that has been handed out to tons of people doesn't make your stuff unique, it just means you're one of the few who think, 'hey I'll take this really simple pattern and try and sucker some money out of it'.

you aren't being unique, sorry to burst your bubble.

It's not that pattern though. I've developed this pattern on my own from studying plushies. I can even show you how I developed the pattern and the pattern its self to show you that it's not that pattern at all.

Kaisermikeb - March 9, 2006 06:29 AM (GMT)
So you copied a pattern to make plushies of licenced property that you pass off as art and sell at artist tables, even though you claim to have a business of "Kala Jesta's Plush n Stuff". All I've ever seen you sell at cons are products, poorly made, fannish products, but products all the same. Whether you call it "Plush art" or not, it's merchandice, not art, and you shouldn't be in the artist alley, but the dealers room. You should also be getting permission from the license holder to be selling this merchandice.

Also, I agree with Yuna. If you want a trademark image, then why don't you go for "not looking like shit" rather than frazzy hair and off ballance eyes. It seems to me that the bulk of the people who are interested in your "unique" look are interested in it because they too want to be "unique" or "different", and one of the ways they are doing it is by carrying around a really scary plush and calling it cute.

Take the first part of this as advice, and the second part as constructive critisism. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but every single aspect of your plushes need a lot of work, and if you want to be a respected "plush artist" (if that term really does exist...) rather than regarded as a joke or e novelty, then you should focus less on shameless self promotion and more on improving your craft.
