Title: Bawls Chugging contest
Description: (The energy drink, you perverts!)
Quincy-kun - February 25, 2006 01:12 AM (GMT)
I was wondering- you guys know the energy drink Bawls, yeah? Well, what if we had a contest to see who could chug like, 3-4 bottles of it, the fastest? It wouldn't take that long, maybe 20-30 minutes, and if we aren't allowed to use energy drinks, we could probably use Pixie Dew or Mountain Dew. And the prize could be just a box of pocky or something. I bet we could have a little fun, maybe do it while the cosplay was getting set up. :alco:
EDIT: Yay! Let the contest begin!
rpb3000 - February 25, 2006 03:17 AM (GMT)
Heh, if it meant free Bawls (or any other energy drink for that matter), I'd do it ^_^
The History Follower - February 25, 2006 04:27 AM (GMT)
And I take it you will be provideing these free drinks or candy or do you expect the con to spend money to buy these products?
Craig - February 25, 2006 08:53 AM (GMT)
It'd be too dangerous to even attempt it without proper waivers...and waivers don't truley protect anyone.
Bawls has such a high caffeine content that if someone were to have some sort of heart attack caused by caffeine at a con sponsored event they would be liable.
Don't be fucking retarded.
rpb3000 - February 25, 2006 09:30 AM (GMT)
Although it could be done with 1 bottle per entree, entree pays for the bottle, and they all line up and are given the signal to start. Person who finished the quickest wins. Prize could be something like 3 free bottles or something.
Of course there'd have to be the disclaimer something to the effect of: Persons sensitive to caffeine should not particiapte.
Kaisermikeb - February 25, 2006 11:39 AM (GMT)
game junkie will be selling bawls I believe, you might want to ask them about this on their forums. It's also the kind of thing you could just do yourself at con without our involvement. Just don't expect anyone to be donating the bawls!

80 mg of caffeine per 12 oz serving? That fails to impress me. A coffee-drinking contest would be more dangerous.
EnishiYukishirolover - February 26, 2006 02:50 AM (GMT)
I'd do it, I know that for sure, Bawls Energy drink rocks!
Quincy-kun - February 26, 2006 05:00 AM (GMT)
Lesse....1 bottle= 2 dollars, so I could probably get about 10 bottles, but that wouldn't be enough.....
What about Mountain Dew or some other soda? I could do a poll to see what soda every one wanted, and I could buy a few six packs of those. (Does it sound good to do it while the cosplay is setting up? Is there anywhere we could do this while everyone was waiting for the cosplay to start?)

You fail to see the fact that a participant may or may not have previously consumed a high amount of caffinated beverages before hand it could be an issue. It would still be the conventions responsibility if anyone had any bad reactions during the contest. Why be fucking stupid and risk something like that. It's the same with having a no-live steel policy. If someone just HAPPENS to hurt someone then the con will be held responsible and we don't want that now do we.

Hrm mountain dew could be interesting, because chugging it tends to make your throat burn for some reason ^_^ I'd say set up a poll out of things you'd be able to have available, and then follow the results of your poll, unlike certain other polls on these forums :-P
I think it'd make sense to do it outside in case anyone decides to spit out a mouthful for whatever reason...
Kaisermikeb - February 26, 2006 01:30 PM (GMT)
No polls!
For the record, this will not be an official con-sanctioned, scheduled event. I would recommend doing it in the gaming area as Game Junkie would be selling Bawls and it would be nice to give them some extra business.

Sounds good to me.
Anyone wanna help me run it? Mike's right, I could probably get Game Junkie to give us some and they'd get more business. It would be easy to do and not take much time, I would just need some help in running it.
Kaisermikeb - February 26, 2006 09:57 PM (GMT)
I don't think they would give you any, though they might give you one as a prize.

I didn't think this would actually happen but fro once I completely agree with Craigcraptor. This event is dangerous and retarded. What's the fun of seeing who can put the most chemicals in his body? No matter what this person would have difficulty enjoying himself for the full duration of the con and probably would have hard time getting asleep. Why don't you just try and see who can take the most viagra?
rpb3000 - February 28, 2006 12:49 AM (GMT)
Becuz Viagara's for Spam.
Exactly how chugging a bottle of Bawls would hinder the enjoyment of the con is well beyond me. It'd keep me up (which is always better than sleeping and missing out on something :-P) and it wouldn't kill me. Or even make me feel bad. Just good shaky energy :-P
Mishikotoko - February 28, 2006 01:39 AM (GMT)
I love Bawls...lol
mmm...in fact I am drinking it right now. I am game for this contest..lol
Kaisermikeb - February 28, 2006 02:15 AM (GMT)
Dildodo, I have to respectfully and lovingly disagree with you. It would take about 10 to 12 bawls in a short period of time to trigger any serious ill effects. If anything, the kids doing it would just feel kind of antsy and maybe have to pee a lot.
Ookami Yokai - February 28, 2006 02:25 AM (GMT)
just 3-4? that doesnt seem like alot (this is coming from a guy who chugs 2 liters of dew continuously on saturday nights XD)
Craig - February 28, 2006 05:13 AM (GMT)
The fact remains that it's still a dangerous event. Not con sanctioned so I don't give two shits. But if someone with some undiagnosed medical condition takes part, dies, and the convention has to deal with the publicity then not my issue. I can be the one on the news saying "I told them not to do it...".

Mike, you're adorably missing the point. Is drinking 4 bawls isn't such a big deal than what's the point of the whole thing in the first place?
Besides, stop being such a hypocrite (again). If you're so sure that no one will have any ill events than why were you so quick to distance yourself from this competition?

As contrasted with declairing open glomp-season on cosplay shows, I think this is harmless fun.

And this is why a good number of intelligent people are distancing themselves from this convention. If they want to do stupid shit like this so be it. But let them do it in their hotel rooms. The laxness of authority is frightening at best and makes me believe that if simple things that have the potential to turn out bad like this are allowed, than what is to stop someone from doing something completely wreckless under convention sanction and harming someone?
There needs to be no grey areas in the rules and in no way should you even remotely promote or allow this activity in a convention ran room.
Kaisermikeb - February 28, 2006 10:33 PM (GMT)
Mishi! Stop playing along with Dildodo, you two have destroyed yet another thread before it's time had come.
Learn to better judge when to and when to not start playing along with him. I'm tired of this getting out of hand, and part of me likes having him around, so don't force me to ban him because you don't know how to ignore him, ok?
rpb3000 - February 28, 2006 10:40 PM (GMT)
I'm all for grey areas, and not from some sort of anarchist's point of view, either. Fact is, you can never account for 100% of possible stupid things people can do. Rules impose limitations on various things that would be allowed, if "the powers that be" didn't determine that it was their job to ensure everyone's safety at the expense of their freedom. Writing rules that explicitly state things one way or another not only usually affects more than the desired problem area, but also opens up loopholes that allow people to bypass the rule. Leaving something gray and to the effect of "don't be stupid" allows people to do whatever they want and face the consequences of their own actions. The con is not, and should not, be the attendees' babysitter.

Our con has taken a strong stance towards trusting people to be not-morons.
Craig, I know you take issue with this, and I remember a long time ago when you came to these forums mainly to try and make security procedures. I understand if you don't agree with this on this, but it's our decision to make, and hell... you keep saying you arn't even coming.
Unlike other cons which build their policy around the thought that you all are total dumbshits, we give you the benifit of the doubt. We trust you to not act like idiotic highschoolers (even those of you who are still in HS).
So basically we trust you not to cross the line. We trust you to know where the line is. If you cross it though, we're going to come down on you hard. That's the trade off. While a lot of cons will give a ton of slaps on the wrist for stupid things, we won't, but when you cross the line you're going to regret it. Think of it as betraying our trust. We let you have the run of the place, but if you betray us, we're going to act like the hurt puppies we WILL be.
Mishikotoko - March 1, 2006 12:11 AM (GMT)
Mike, I will stop. I only go so far. Yoiu know that.
*stops*
As for the rules being clean cut, nothing outside the line, that would make a lot of people decide not to come. I know a lot of people who are comming because they think AP is more relaxed than most conventions.

Well there is mistake one. Not expecting a bunch of rabid convention goers to not act like fucktards.
Part 2. There is a HUUUUUUUUUGE chance I'll likely not come for a few simple reasons that doesn't mean I shouldn't care somewhat about how this turns out. I'd like to eventually goto an anime punch sometime, but if there isn't an anime punch after this to goto then I won't have that chance.
Quincy-kun - March 1, 2006 02:48 AM (GMT)
Everyone, calm down. I didn't want this to be a huge rant thread. Someone should edit the title to "Mountain Dew Chugging Contest" with a caption of 'It's only 12 oz, stop yelling!' I said, we're only going to do ONE 12 oz mountain dew each. There is NO WAY IN HELL someone could get hyper off of that unless you are a complete schizophrenic.
This isn't about being moronic, or anything like that. It's just about having a little fun at the con. The site says that we shouldn't be sitting around doing nothing, right? Then how about we get up off our conning asses and chug some mountain dew?
Chris - March 1, 2006 04:22 AM (GMT)
I really don't care about this idea one way or the other. My point is simple: Energy drinks, despite their hardcore, extreme, edgy image, don't have all that much caffeine; in this case, less than a cup of coffee. (On the other hand,
this stuff is pretty scary.... ) People can do serious damage or die from taking too much caffeine, but it's almost always involves caffeine pills. Drinking too much coffee or whatnot is likely to make life unpleasant, but you'd have to drink dozens of cups to put yourself at any real risk, even if you don't have much tolerance.
Honestly, I'd be much more concerned about people vomitting.
As potential liabilities go, this seems pretty insignificant; it doesn't seem much worse than the potential liability of selling energy drinks at the con in the first place. (Of course, I'll eat my words if someone does manage to drink forty bottles of Bawls - though it's still unlikely that they'd die.) There's no way to completely eliminate risk. We've got people wearing costumes and carrying props. We're showing anime in darkened rooms - in clear violation of the warnings! Crowds always have the potential to trample people. We make rules for the likely problems, and trust security and other attendees to keep an eye out for other problems that develop. We aren't going to ban pencils because you can put out somebody's eye.
Kaisermikeb - March 1, 2006 04:26 AM (GMT)
Mishi: It's not how far you go, it's when you do it. This thread is still serving a purpose. Besides, there are already at least 4 other threads we're all playing grab-ass in, and really there only needs to be one of those.
Craig: I'm not saying you shouldn't care. Any normal human would. I ment that I am going to listen to the concerns and desires of paying customers rather than random dissenters! Anyhow, there are plenty of boring cons that have the "people are stupid" philosophy. Feel free to go to them and get yelled at for being a fan.
Quincy: It's all good. Anyhow, a mt. Dew chugging contest would almost certainly be more dangerous!
Mishikotoko - March 1, 2006 01:28 PM (GMT)
Ok.
<So back to the subject now...>
I like the bawls chugging.
In addition we could see how much pocky someone can eat without anything to drink, and how fast. (People used to do this with crackers)

~Sigh~
Now on to the more important stuff:
I guess the biggest problem I have with Bawls chugging contest is the fact that limiting it to just four destroys the whole point. So you drank all four... then what? Where's the fun in that? On the other hand, not limiting it at all would be irresponsible.
The challenge is to come up with a contest that isn't dangerous and at the time fun. Like Mishi's pocky eating idea. I love it.
