There is no cartoon version.... please never refer anime like that, especially to something as great as FF. The OVA was made to help line up the events of what actually happens in FFVII/AC.

There is no cartoon version. There was an anime OAV called Last Order released at the same time in Japan (included with the special edition of AC). But it's not a "cartoon version of AC."
That said, I rather thought Advent Children sucked. It relies on you already knowing and understanding the plot of one of the more convoluted FF games, and assuming you do, the movie is then completely predictable.
That's actually why I liked Spirits Within. I hadn't played any FF games at that point - and I didn't need to in order to understand the movie. And it was a good movie too - I think the only reason everybody else says it sucked is because it wasn't linked to a game.
And it was way over-hyped. FF7 the game was always over-hyped - it's not as good as everybody made it out to be - but it's worse now. Between Advent Children, and the various new FF7 games, and the rumored possible remake of FF7 for the PS3, there's more hype than the game ever warranted.
Last Order was actually pretty decent though, but it won't be released here.
Mishikotoko - February 15, 2006 03:12 PM (GMT)
FFII AC was ok. It was predictable though...(although I still liked it a lot.lol)
ookami-san - February 15, 2006 03:15 PM (GMT)
I ment Anime. I was watching it on youtube. AC is a little predictable. I saw the main stuff already but i still want to see the whole thing.
Kaisermikeb - February 15, 2006 03:18 PM (GMT)
Personally I think FF7 is totally worth all the hype. Of the few RPG's I've played, it is the only one I've ever enjoyed, and I liked it a LOT. I think it has one of the better plots of any thing I've seen, and I sort of have a soft spot for things that work on sort of a psychological level at times.
So, as a hardcore FF7 fan, I think AC is awesome. Well worth the hype, and watching it was probably the best viewing experience I'll ever have, as I saw it with a bunch of other FF7 fans.
True, if you havn't played the game, it's just eye candy, and probably pretty lame. But for a fan of the game it is pure fanservice! It gave us everything we could want, like a well written fanfic or a gainax anime. It knew its audience, knew what that audience wanted, and gave it to them. A little dash of plot, no background, and then 45 minutes of action!
It also answered some of the age old questions, like "Can Vincent really Fly?" or "Can Cloud really get shot?". Yes. Apparently the answer to both is yes.
Mind you, I understand that if you didn't like FF7, then you arn't going to like this movie. I don't hold it against anyone for disliking the movie for that reason, though I might hold not liking the game against you, depending on why ^_^
cloud1414 - February 15, 2006 03:36 PM (GMT)
i have the final fantasy vii: Last order
its great, you guys need to see it
Kaisermikeb - February 15, 2006 03:43 PM (GMT)
I think we pretty much all have.
I dunno, I didn't like the style so much of it, and it kind of over simplified important aspects of the game... but it was kind of cool at the same time.
kalajessta - February 15, 2006 03:46 PM (GMT)
The Last Order had a weird art style to it when I first saw it. It was drawn in a old school feel, which I thought they could of done a better job with it.
ookami-san - February 15, 2006 03:47 PM (GMT)
agreed. It was good tho. Last Order was a little simple but some of the stuff was simplifyed 3-D. I enjoyed it. I havent played the game but i still like it. I saw FF10 which is kind of weird. I liked that one too.
Kaisermikeb - February 15, 2006 03:59 PM (GMT)
The animation to me seemed to... modern... if that makes sense. Maybe too American.
ookami-san - February 15, 2006 04:02 PM (GMT)
Just a little too american. when i was watching it i couldnt help but think about the american anime's that suck. american made i mean
rpb3000 - February 15, 2006 05:01 PM (GMT)
I liked the animation to Last Order. A lot. But I also like 2D over 3D like, all the time.
FF: Spirits Within had a lousy plot, was full of plotholes, and wasn't even Japanese. I definately didn't like it.
Advent Children was alright. I don't think it would appeal to more than just the hardcore FFVII fans, which to me knocks it down a few points.
cloud1414 - February 15, 2006 08:20 PM (GMT)
well i just thought that it was cool, it helped alot of ppl understand the whole story of ff7

I havent even played the game and i still love it. I havent even seen the whole thing. Im no hard core fan but its still awsome

I can't see how it could do that. It seems to me that if you didn't already understand the story, AC would just make you even more confused.
kalajessta - February 16, 2006 05:38 AM (GMT)
Before I had watched FFVII/AC, I had no prior knowledge of the FF world. I never played a game before then either. Lucikly I had a ton of friends that filled me in on what happened in AC and FFVII. I bought FFVII shortly after (though I haven't gotten far yet) and I still know alot more stuff that happens then most FF fanatics, which is surprisngly. If there's something I like, I generally read up on it or asks friends that have seen it for info about it. Friends are great for that reason.
Kaisermikeb - February 16, 2006 05:54 AM (GMT)
Heh, I think just about ever FF fanatic I know would take offence to that, Sarah!
Just because you know of Lucretia doesn't mean you understand her!
Wyatt - February 16, 2006 05:33 PM (GMT)
Advent Children is pretty cool. Best fight scene I've ever seen, to be sure.
I mean the movie. The fight scene, that is. Where the former is the latter.

I liked the fight scene, sure, but I think there was little else that made the movie worthwhile. It was too predictable. Though I loved the battle victory song being used as a cell phone ring-tone the first tme I saw that.
I dunno, maybe I should play through FF7 again when I get a chance, and maybe I'll like it better this time. But I doubt it.

I hate to ask, but I'm new to this thing (bittorrent) and I was wondering if someone could link me to a good torrent for FFAC and tell me how to use it
(but if asking for torrents and stuff like that is against board rules, I'll just delete this post)
rpb3000 - February 17, 2006 12:06 AM (GMT)
Lots of good torrent search sites out there, my personal favorite being
TorrentSpy. Just do a search and download a healthy torrent file for whatever you're looking for. (Healthy=Lots of seeders, TorrentSpy shows the health of the torrents on the results page for your search).
You'll also need a BitTorrent client.
Azureus is decent, albeit mildly confusing. Just leave it at the default settings for everything and you're probably good to go. The only thing I changed was some sort of funky port number because it brought up an alert recommending I do so. *shrug*
Ruhtra - February 17, 2006 12:14 AM (GMT)
thanks, I'm going to try that

Use
www.torrentz.com It's like the dogpile of torrent search engines, except it doesn't taint your searches with sponsored results so its actually worth something. As for torrent clients, I prefer bittornado over all others. Azureus is utter, utter shite that tries to conceal its suckitude with a pretty (read: obfuscated) interface (total java crap).
PS: damn the lack of html...
kalajessta - February 17, 2006 03:52 AM (GMT)
Isohunt is another good torrent search engine that I use when I can't find an anime to use. But most of the time I use www.anime-source.com . They even have torrents like Naruto, Black Cat, etc. that are liscened.
rpb3000 - February 17, 2006 07:09 AM (GMT)
What's wrong with java?
Limewire's java and I've been using it since Mac OS 9 (at which time it was the ONLY file-sharing app for Mac). I still use it and that's 'cuz it works. I find what I'm looking for.
As far as torrent clients, I just want something that'll launch the thing and download it. The bells & whistles just confuse me. I was using the official BitTorrent client until things just like completely stopped working after I upgraded it recently. Like the downloads were going ubermecha slow, or not at all. Azureus has been getting the job done.

You mean besides it being big, slow, and bloated as all hell?
Well, those are my major complaints with it. Less major ones include the GUI you can write with it. Until relatively recently, it wasn't possible to write a Java program with a GUI that fit in with the native interface of whatever OS you're running. It's possible now and some programs do it (Azureus for example), but still not that many.
That's on the user side. Looking at it from the perspective of a developer, Java's .... interesting. They removed a number of very useful features from C++ (the biggest being pointers) because they posed a security risk. Considering what Java's goals are, that makes sense, but it also makes it a royal PITA. They removed multiple inheritance, but replaced it with interfaces, which I think is a good move in general. But Java has done a number of other things that are a pain. In short, from a programmer's perspective, Java has some small improvements over C/C++, but enough things that are a pain that I'd rather just use C. or assembly for that matter.
Trent Arms:
Sure Azureus sucks. But it does have some featuers I haven't seen in any other Linux client, and so it's still my client of choice. I like BitComet better, but it's windoze only. The problem with older versions of the official client and others based on it (like bittornado) is that they only download one torrent per instance. Having to load up a new python interpreter for each torrent will run you out of RAM even faster than using the bloat that is Java for Azureus. Newer versions of the official client can download multiple torrents in a single instance, but when I tried it, the interface needed work, and you could only have 3 moving at a time, though you could have more queued up. Most of the other random clients out there for Linux just suck - they don't give you any decent level of control. Like KTorrent - it lets you download multiple torrents and such, but it's a PITA to control priorities of different torrents, and there's no way to prioritize the different files within a torrent. That's the one killer feature of Azureus I can't do without.
Quincy-kun - February 20, 2006 04:16 AM (GMT)
If you get AC off of Shinsen Subs directly and you save it to your computer, it only takes a few seconds. That happened to me, at least. (I hope I didn't do anything wrong)
I have the movie on a DVD, if anyone wants to see it at the con. Unless, of course, the police will come after me for it.
ookami-san - February 21, 2006 02:22 PM (GMT)
Can you please post the link? Does it cost money? Please i must have it :ph43r:
cloud1414 - February 26, 2006 07:11 AM (GMT)
well you can download the torrent off sites, but it will take a while to get it, i will just wait till it comes out, wwould i be able to bring it to the con??? that would be cool if i was able to
LadyYuna - February 26, 2006 07:09 PM (GMT)
I saw Advent Children without having any prior knowledge of the game, and I adored the movie. Of course now I have game knowledge because I have friends filling me in on things I didn't know, but still, I thought the movie was great.
cloud1414 - February 26, 2006 07:41 PM (GMT)
well its a great movie, ppl will love it when it comes out. so just be happy when it comes out
runeninja - February 28, 2006 03:45 PM (GMT)
Haha, I have Last Order on my PSP.
Anyone want me to bring it? :)
RBGCloud - February 28, 2006 10:05 PM (GMT)
Excuse me for backtracking, but I've been gone a while. :(
I saw people talking about how awesome Last Order was. Yes, it's very pleasing to the eyes and to the people who get motion sick from watching 3-D movies (yes, I know people. Luckily I am not one of them.) But there was a problem I found on my second viewing of LO... Plot holes. If you played through FF VII you've seen the scene with Zax, Cloud an Sephiroth in the reactor. Adding stuff in for Zax was very nice, I liked it a lot. But.... They stole what was probably Cloud's only true accomplishment at the Nibelheim reactor. In the game, Cloud took hold oh Masamune, which was impaled through his stomach, and used it to lift Sephiroth and throw him into the Mako pit. In LO... Sephiroth jumped. Yes, that's right, he jumped like a little fairy prince. Fuck that. Stick to the original, bitches!
</rant>
But yeah, AC was amazing and I've gotten a few of my friends to play FF VII just so I can have an excuse for showing it to them ^_^;

Heh, I'm surprised it took you two viewings to notice! That's my favorite scene for more or less anything. When we started watching it we were talking about wanting to see that.
TV's were nearly destroyed! The CD with Last Order burnt on it WAS destroyed!
Our fury lasted into the night

Yes, Zax is dead. No, he was not shot by Reno. He was shot in the head by an insubordinate MP while protecting Cloud.

Yeah, I was in uber squealy fangirl mode the first time around.. then I calmed down... and that's when the rage came.
