I've heard of it, but I've never played it.

(I'm downloading the free version right now, I just hope it plays on PC)

Free version? It's all free now, since the Trilogy Release. Most people use the open-source Aleph One engine instead of the original games', as the community around it has basically upgraded everything to more modern graphics and such.

As far as PC-playability, the only game out of the trilogy ever released officially for Windows was Marathon 2. However, links to the files needed to play all of them on PC and instructions to use said files are available on the Trilogy Release page. This requires Aleph One, o'course. Also, M1 isn't available for PC. Instead you have to get the M1-A1 conversion. Links are on the Trilogy Release site.

For any other information, hit marathon.bungie.org. More information than you can shake a stick at. And lots of 3rd party scenarios to play that are almost as good as the original storylines ^_^

Good reminder on marathon, that's in the category of things I've been meaning to get to installing, having never been more than a casual mac user, and forgot about the A1 conversions.
