Title: How do you pick your cosplays?

Just a random thought. How do people pick their cosplays?

How long it is until the convention, like most people I know(I included)Start usually a few days after the convention, preparing for the next years. But with Ohayocon, and many other conventions, like, you use the outfit over again. But sometimes its if you know the character, you can make the outfit, and if you have time to make it.

I meant how do you "pick" the cosplays your cosplaying as. Not the whole "how do I do it" stuff.

Read closer, people choose the characters if they know what the character is like.

I cosplayed Capitain Amuro from FLCL at Ohayocon because I have red hair and it was easy. I'm considering doing Gourry Gabriev from Slayers for AP, mostly because a friend of mine is doing Xellos, but that one will be more of a challenge. It will largely depend on how much time I have over spring break as to wether I do it at all or not. If I can't do Gourry, I plan on doing Shonen Bat from Paranoia Agent because it's one I know I could throw together quickly.

It all just depends on what you think you can do more than anything else. I saw some pretty extravigant costumes at Ohayocon (my fave was someone who did Nausicaa perfectly), but I don't have the time or creativity necessary to pull off some of those.

I usually just find a character I really like and if I sort of have the build for that character, I start on a costume. The one exception was Rinrei (Saiyuki)-- I didn't really like her but she was involved with my favorite character fom the series; it was really an excuse to dress up my dude as Homura.

I will agree with your "how to pick" method, Mishi-chan. It takes time, skill and talent to pull off a certain costume and if you don't have all three, either find someone that does or start another costume. Let alone money is another issue as well. I mostly look at:

Series - Generally a series I'm really big into that helps me decide what character I'm cosplaying.
Has anyone else cosplayed it alot or not? - I generally like cosplaying characters that haven't been done before or very little.
Money - How much will the costume cost? Can I afford it?
Making the Costume - Can I sew it? Can my mom sew it? If I can't, can I find someone that can? Or can I find it in a Salvation Army or thrift store?
Will it be fun to make? - Or will it be a pain in the ass (like Akamaru)?
Will it be noticed once at the con? - Very important for cons such as Otakon or ACen.

True, I like my costumes to be noticed.

Bout the same here was with my RBG comrade Ender. I see something pretty cool, then me and my buddy Sixpod get to work making costumes.
