Title: Naruto CCG
Description: What's it like?

Faris Kalin - December 6, 2005 07:31 AM (GMT)
I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the Naruto CCG. Bandai recently announced that they are releasing it in the U.S. At least I think the Japanese CCG and the U.S. CCG are going to be the same. I was wondering what the mechanics are like, and what people think about it. Are they still releasing sets for it in Japan? It seems like a good CCG could be made from Naruto, but one never knows. It would be nice if I could get in on the ground floor of a good CCG that will be around for awhile.

Uhh...Magic?

I do play Magic. However, some of the cards for it are rather expensive and hard to get (and I've been playing off and on since '94). Plus, the rules system has gotten rather bloated and complicated. I can't even remember a tournament where there wasn't some obscure rule question that didn't even come close to having a common sense answer.

I just want a game that I can get cards for at a decent price that is complex enough to make it fun to play but not so complex that I'm asking rules questions every other turn. It would also be nice if the game didn't die rather quickly (like the Cyberpunk 2020 game). Thus, I figured that the Naruto CCG might work since the show is rather popular, and surely someone can make a decent CCG about frickin' ninjas. :ph43r:

If someone has started decks and either knowledge or patience enough for the blind leading the blind, I'm always open for learning more CCGs, Naruto's might get very interesting, as the system becomes more and more balanceable over a likely short release cycle.

Masamiri,

What CCGs have you played before? The Naruto CCG is supposed to come out in March. I'll probably bring a deck or two with me to the convention if I can get enough cards in time. I bet others will do the same. I certainly don't mind teaching someone how to play. I've done that many times with Magic. I've got high hopes for the Naruto CCG. I certainly hope it turns out good.

For an example of a poor anime CCG, try the Card Captor Sakura one, if you can even find any of the cards. Now that was a horrid CCG! Yet, it seems like Sakura is something that would make a good CCG. I chalk it up to people trying to cash in on the CCG craze without putting any thought into design.

Ah, I'll agree there Faris, there have been some ridiculously bad CCGs, though that one I haven't played yet. I've played a good deal of Magic, some Yu-gi-oh, some Pok‹èmon (not really a bad game in some aspects, and definitely was a nice one to resell japanese cards on ebay for) and Decipher's Star Wars CCG; Star Wars and M:TG being my preferred ones. Come to think of it, I've also done the Digimon and Lord of the Rings ones, when I found someone willing to learn from some decks I had around.

Hopefully Naruto has some neat mechanics of its own as well, hope to play against you at the con. And by then I'll have actually watched some Naruto as well, instead of just knowing it from the Gamecube games.

do you have a link about the CCG being release if so,if it comes out at the con ill pick it up and see how it is

Is there a website or some information about the US release? I'm rather interested...

The History Follower - March 3, 2006 06:41 PM (GMT)
I've seen someone say it's suppose to come out in March, but that's about it and info could very likely be wrong. Bandai is putting it out so they'll be the ones to put up the website for it if you want to look there.

Faris Kalin - March 4, 2006 10:50 AM (GMT)
I just recently came across some info that mentioned that the Naruto CCG wouldn't be out into mid-April. I think it might have been from Diamond Previews. Anyway, it only listed that it was coming out at that time. It didn't give any info about the game itself. I haven't even come across an official website yet, but there should be one soon since the game is supposed to come out in April. Unfortunately, it looks like we won't be able to play this at the convention.

It's been out for awhile now. http://www.fma-tcg.com

We're going to have a tournament for it at the con.

mlaroche - April 20, 2006 02:32 PM (GMT)
actaully the naruto ccg card game officially releases april 28th. It will only be issued to hobby stores for the first 2 months upon release. Then within another 2 months it will be released to wal-mart and target. During that time another booster set is supposed to come out.

Faris Kalin - April 21, 2006 08:13 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I'll be running a launch tournament for it in my area. It looks like it's a well made game that will be rather fun to play (especially for those of us that are into the Naruto anime). For everyone that asks me what it's like, I usually say that it's a little like Magic but with less convoluted rules. Anyway, since I'm a Meijin for the game, feel free to ask me any questions about it.

ARG!! every game is like MTG but "different" What happend to original games like Magi-nation!?!?!??! T_T

.hack was cool too.

Faris Kalin - April 28, 2006 08:34 AM (GMT)
It's not that it's really like Magic. It's just that most people have played or heard of Magic, and Magic is really popular. Thus, it's easy and appealing to say that it's a bit like Magic (which technically is true since all card games share some similar elements). I tend to mainly emphasize the "less convoluted rules part." I mean have you seen the Magic online rulebook it's several hundred pages. However, Naruto's rulebook is about thirty pages. I told someone that, and they said give it time. Then, I told them that it was already on set 16 or so in Japan. That illustrated my point quite well. Not to rant, but the convoluted Magic rule system just drives me nuts.

Also, it's also easier to explain things if you can correlate them to other things that people are familiar with. Such as, jutsus are like the spells in Magic and chakra is a bit like mana.

Ruhtra - April 28, 2006 10:46 PM (GMT)
so its a stripped down version of Magic with Naruto pictures? Sounds dull.

Well, I wouldn't really say that. Really, the only things that the two games have in common are that you play creatures in both games (ninjas in Naruto) and you play spells in both games (jutsus in Naruto). However, the mechanics are totally different for costs of ninjas, how jutsus are played, life, battle resolution, and pretty much everything.

To put what I was saying in a different format, let's say that you know a romance language like French, then you can learn Spanish easier b/c they have some base things in common that you can correlate. It's the same with all card games. If you've played Yugioh, then you already have a head start with Inuyasha, Magic, or any other card game simply b/c you can correlate.

The problem with stuff like that aka card games in general, if you leave it in your pocket and wash your pants... they're all gone...

Oh, I see your point, I played pokemon first instead of yugioh though and it was easy to pick up yugioh.

That happened to me once.....

and there is some other card game that looks really cool. Its rules are really different so it would take awhile to learn them, but it looks like fun.

Also, you know those card sleeves that everyone uses to protect their cards? Well, my friends and I found out their one critical flaw. We were having a huge chaos game of Magic. Most of us had sleeves, but some of us didn't (myself included). Then it happened; someone spilled a drink on the table. I sweep up my cards and escape damage and most others do the same. A few people with sleeves seem unalarmed until they start to notice that the sleeves act like capillaries and draw the fluid in. You could just see the wave of horror wash over their faces. It's funny now, but at the time it was quite traumatizing.

Heh, I would be the one laughing because I wanted to hide the fact that my cards were just ruined. 0-o
