Title: FightAIDS@Home
Description: You your computer for a good cause!

The Female Eiri Yuki - November 22, 2005 06:28 PM (GMT)
Anime addicts unite for a good cause!

I've been a member of FightAIDS@Home for a few months now and now that they've updated the program, you can form teams again! I've formed a team called Anime Addicts Against AIDS and I'm looking for people who'd like to join it!

How it works:
(Quoted in part from the FightAIDS@Home website and the World Comunity Grid site.)

The program, called AutoDock, is used to predict how small molecules, such as drug candidates, might bind or "dock" to a receptor of known 3D structure. The program uses idle processor cycles that would otherwise go to waste. So while your computer is on, any cycles that you don't use it applies it towards the program. The program itself runs modles of the evolution of drug resistance and helps to design drugs necessary to fight AIDS. When your computer has finished a project, it will wait until you have connected to the internet again and then the results are sent back, collected and analysed, and your computer will request a new project. As long as your computer is on you're helping to fight AIDS!

In one year there has been 20,000 years of reasearch done just by linking computers together!

Joining and the software is free and all the results become public knowledge.

What's required:
At least a 550MHz Intel Pentium™ processor or equivalent
At least 250 MB RAM (with virtual memory enabled)
600 MB Hard Disk Drive with at least 50 MB available for use.
The ability to display 8-bit graphics at 800x600 resolution
An Internet connection with minimum 40 kbps speed
Operating System: Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP
They also have a program available for linux users.

It's a good cause, to be sure. Better than YETI@home by a lot. But, my idle cycles are already engaged with Stanford's Folding@home, a project that I feel is more important overall. Whatever you do, I highly recommend tossing in your idle cycles with one of these groups. More info on F@H may be found at http://folding.stanford.edu/.

Since my grandmother has Alzheimer's, my great grandmother died from it, also my grandfather died from Parkinson's, and we ALL know someone who had/has cancer. This looks like something I'd switch back and forth to (between F@H and FA@H). Say one day run FA@H and the next day run F@H.

Thanks for the link!! I'll deffinately be looking into it!

Edit: I should mention that the World Community Grid that runs FightAIDS@Home can be adjusted to run both FA@H and the Human Proteome Folding Project (50/50 chance on what project your computer will recieve at the time it requests a project) which appears to be similar to the Folding@Home project. I'll have to learn more about Stanford's project to see how similar they are. Who knows, we may be helping the same cause through different programs : ) I'll post more when I have time to look into this.

Just a quick update: Anime Addicts Against AIDS now has its first new members! Thanks to those who've joined up!!! Much excitement here!

I've found a forum topic on the World Community Grid that discusses the similaries and differences between Folding@Home and the Proteome Folding program cunducted with WCG. While they have their differences they are generally working on common grounds.

Here's the link for more information:

Hope this information helps : )

Oh, and I'd like to welcome the two newest members that have joined Anime Addicts Against AIDS! Thanks for joining!

Heh, I ran with GIMPS for awhile (Great Internet Meridian Prime Search) same thing as this. Tho they tend to bog down process time and network bandwidth. But eh why not.

I'm on a Mac. Otherwise I would.

I'm on a Mac.  Otherwise I would.

Being a snoody Mac user is no excuse!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I recommend the console client. It gets the most done.

The second job my system did was meatnormous! It took just under 160 hours! Thank goodness that one is out of the way. The first and third ones popped out in less than a day. So really it varries on what kind of a system you have and the job you get. I'm hoping and praying that we get a new computer soon so more can be accomplished on my end. : ) Then I'll be able to have TWO systems running for FightAIDS@Home!

By the by, Anime Addicts is now seven members strong! Thanks everyone!

You could have chosen a FAR less PC name!

Oh yeah, EMAIL me the info, and maybe we'll put something on the real page

The Female Eiri Yuki - December 2, 2005 06:43 AM (GMT)
I could have made it something like "One Eyed Burt Saves Africa!" or "Godzilla For a Cause!" or maybe "Satan's Little Helpers Gone AWOL" but I thought that inappropriate. Also, I figured people, like me, who'd been up for waaaay to long needed something simple and to the point so it would be easier to understand.

Anyways, what info would you like? You want I should just email you the info on here? Or make something up entirely?

Kaisermikeb - December 2, 2005 02:45 PM (GMT)
Give me something more or less complete so I can just throw it on the website.

The Female Eiri Yuki - December 5, 2005 10:13 PM (GMT)
Just an update for you Mike. Your information is pretty much finished. I'm just running it by the group over at the World Community Grid to make sure I haven't made any errors. You should have it in your inbox soon. : )

Kaisermikeb - December 6, 2005 09:00 AM (GMT)
heh heh .... grid... heh heh

The Female Eiri Yuki - December 13, 2005 07:56 AM (GMT)
Mike, I was just wondering if you got the email I sent you or not. If you're thinking "What email?" then you most likely didn't get it and I'll have to resend it.

Kaisermikeb - December 13, 2005 07:04 PM (GMT)
Oh, sorry, I got it!
I also totally forgot to do anything with it. I'm sorry. I'll forward that on!

The Female Eiri Yuki - December 14, 2005 01:43 AM (GMT)
Oh not a problem. I was just pestering XD It's my theme this week.

Pestering people for a job so I can get the hell out of gas hell.
Pestering my husband to ask about his possible promotion (he got it! *imagines rolling in fat paychecks*).
Pestering my Shuchan for Anime Addicts banners (like the newest one?).
Pestering people for christmas presents.

I'm the self proclaimed pest of the week!

The Female Eiri Yuki - March 1, 2006 11:49 AM (GMT)

An update on the project: The first phase of the project is now 78% complete! You can visit http://fightaidsathome.scripps.edu/news/vol1.html to learn more about what's being done : )
