Title: Bringing your own games...
devo - April 28, 2005 09:56 PM (GMT)
Hey, I just read about this event in The Other Paper, and I'd really like to come by as it sounds like a lot of fun. I'd also like to bring a few of my own games (specifically, games from the Bemani series, including Pop'n Music and Beatmania IIDX), but I'm not sure if this is allowed or if there will be room for it.
Kaisermikeb - April 29, 2005 07:18 PM (GMT)
I think the best policy would be to do it first, ask questions later! Just find a TV no ones using and hook up!
Or... better yet... bring a TV with you! We'll make sure it's treated well, and it would be great to see those games there!
We're pretty laid back, this con is for the fans, so we let the fans half-run it, so go for it!
Craig - May 5, 2005 03:18 PM (GMT)
My hopes were way way up to see some pop 'n music. I didn't get to play it if it was there though.
Kaisermikeb - May 6, 2005 04:42 AM (GMT)
Nah, no one showed up with it.
Next year maybe...
Craig - May 6, 2005 03:04 PM (GMT)
We can only hope. I'm practicing my non-existant beatmania skillss to make a total ass outtta my self next year.
Craig - May 7, 2005 02:19 PM (GMT)
You should have a CS:S tourney next year.
Kaisermikeb - May 10, 2005 05:54 AM (GMT)
Is that Counter Strike?
What is that?
Craig - June 6, 2005 08:53 PM (GMT)
Yeah it's Counter Strike: Source the half life 2 version of counter-strike.

Hmm... maybe we should plan for massive DS or PSP events! Anyone know much about those things?
Wyatt - August 15, 2005 08:12 AM (GMT)
Much about them how? I can give explanations of the architecture, capabilities, hacking, and a little linux...does that help?
In all seriousness:
The DS uses a proprietary protocol in the DS and a single-copy play system similar to that of the Game Boy Advance but I wouldn't doubt that chop might be incurred from too many players trying to interface from a single copy of a game; a ratio of about 3 to 1 is probably best if possible (don't quote me on this: I'm only going on what I know about Wi-Fi throughput capabilites [The Reality Of, not The Theory Of] and how bus sytems work: I'll look into it more). Range is about 30-100 feet. Cannot be extended as of yet (through officially endorsed means)
Here's the Wikipedia blurb about ther PSP Wi-Fi. Best advice: use that AC Adapter. As with the DS, it is doubtless better to have more than just a single copy for 16 players.
| QUOTE ("Wikipedia") |
Ad-hoc wireless networking allows for (in theory) up to 16 PSPs within range of each other to communicate directly, typically for multiplayer gaming. The launch titles Ridge Racer and Lumines, for example, support this. One unit can act as the host for a game, which is available to other PSP units within that systems range, and appears in a list when the client PSP searches for available hosts. Hosting a game in this manner increases power consumption and reduces battery life. [edit]
Infrastructure networks
The PSP's main menu allows the user to configure the system for use across the Internet via a wireless connection, known as infrastructure mode. The PSP's menu can recognize protected and non-protected wireless networks within its range, and attempt to request a firmware update from Sony's servers.
A handful of titles, including three U.S. launch games and an as-of-yet untitled MMORPG, have been announced which use this wireless network functionality. Packet tunneling systems are in development by third-parties which allow any Wi-fi game to operate across the Internet (see external links, below).
Use of infrastructure networks in PSP software began with a small number of titles at the US launch, supporting online play. South Korean PSPs will ship with software providing web browsing and multimedia streaming features, but only through company-owned WiFi hotspots, and with a monthly fee[4].
A List of PlayStation Portable WiFi games is available. |

narultimatehero - August 16, 2005 11:50 PM (GMT)
I know a lot of people who would be very into having a massive final-fantasy gameboy tournament. The question is, how to extend the range enough to allow a lot of people to play at once? Also, could there be a pokemon tourney too?
RBGCloud - August 17, 2005 12:39 AM (GMT)
Holy crap! Naru returned!!!!

smokie - January 25, 2007 04:05 AM (GMT)
I hope I run into some people with FFIII for DS so I can send out the Mognet shit to unlock the secret stuff.
andy - January 25, 2007 04:41 AM (GMT)
I'm gonna bring a bunch of stuff this year. I'll probably just get a box full of all my games and leave it in my room(which is actually my car in the lot) so if we need anything I can run and get it. Of course I'll have my Wii remote in my pocket, and my gamecube controller strapped to my belt too. But that's normal for me.
Any word on a Smash tourney? I'll run it if nobody else wants to. What about some Wii games? Rayman and DBZ could make for some fun competition. Do we know who's organizing the game room yet? I can help out a bit...Of course I was also going to try to run the DDR room too, so this might get a little complicated.
I really hate how slow the gaming forum is here...The whole reason I go to Cons is for gaming, and all the free swag, I'm worried there's not going to be much if nobody's posting about it but me.
Wyatt - January 25, 2007 05:25 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I know, I've been rather mum on anything as far as my little corner of the universe goes, and really need to start giving this some serious attention (yes, Mike, I intend to send that email soon). As far as your own personal collection, we could probably work some of it in somewhere, I'm sure. Game Junkies does tournament stuff, but the retro gaming room (and possibly another one, pending a few decisions) is my demesne.
Kaisermikeb - January 25, 2007 05:28 AM (GMT)
Rest assured we'll have gaming. We've got an entire wing dedicated to it, so it will be pretty cool.
We'll definitely have some smash lined up, as well as some other neat stuff. Honestly though, the video game room is one of the last things we coordinate, just because we've all got a lot of games and it's not that hard to do. We also work with Game Junkie, a store in Cincinnati that does a lot of tournaments, so we should have a pretty decent setup.
Tsugaru - January 25, 2007 07:30 PM (GMT)
I can being BEATMANIA if you need it.
Kaisermikeb - January 25, 2007 11:57 PM (GMT)

Tsugaru - January 26, 2007 12:20 AM (GMT)

What kind of Dance mats? Don't bother bringing foam ones, I'm going to bring at least one metal pad, and hopefully somebody can come up with some more.
Unless we could have 2 DDR setups? We could have the main DDR room with Stepmania and the metal pads (for the more experienced players) and have the PS2/Xbox versions with soft mats set up somewhere else for the people that want to play Butterfly 3 times in a row on Beginner.
(There is a "DDR room" right?)
