Please don't call an event 'Anime Hell' unless it's actually run by the Anime Hell folks...We of course like to see anyone do wacky bad video mix shows, but please if you don't mind, let us keep the 'Anime Hell' name in-house as it were ^_^

Sure, and sorry about that!
Good to see you on the forums though! Hope you stick around!

Don't know if it's too late to add a suggestion for next year's con, but I'll take a stab anyway.
Every con has anime art and artist's contest but no one seems to do anything for the fanfic writer. Would it be possible to have a contest or some kind of display of their talent (i.e., fiction writing, poetry, etc.)?
And yeah, I'm asking 'cause I'm a writer (sort of).
Kyo_RBG - July 23, 2005 01:40 AM (GMT)
thats a damn skippy idea i think you're gonna be an asset to this convention

Thank you! I'm glad you like the idea. :D

So it's going to be a group of contestants square off to write the best...fanfic. They write this before the convention or during? This will mean that every judge is going to have to have their own copy of a fic plus take a huge portion of time (perhaps all three days depending on the amount of entries and their size) to read each and every submission. Art contests are a little easier to do because the judges can take a set amount of time, look at all the pretty pictures and then convene and decide.
I'm not saying it's not a bad idea or anything just that it would be difficult to pull off because setting a page limit really hampers creativity of a writer and why only slop something together half-assed when you have the potential to write something really good, neh? Anyway that's just my two cents.
Kaisermikeb - July 24, 2005 06:21 PM (GMT)
We could post all the contestant applications online, so that everyone has a chance to read them. They would be due maybe 2 weeks before the con? That would give the judges enough time to do their thing too.

That sounds like a good idea. Also, if a contestant doesn't meet the deadline, they are ineligible for the contest.
It might be a good idea to consider making the fiction/story part of the contest a 'one-shot' story instead of multiple chapters. That way, you can set a maximum page number limit for the story (as they do in on-line and actual snail mail submission writing contests). The story I've written and would consider for submission is a one-shot with a total of 22 pages. The poetry category could be limited to a max of 3 poems (sent together in one file).
Contestants would be limited to ONE submission in each category -- fiction and poetry.
I'd also let it be an 'open' contest, meaning, let the writers write about their favorite anime character(s)/series or any series/character(s) they'd like. I know that, as a writer, if I'm given a theme or subject to write about, I automatically develop writer's block and can't write. But if I'm left to me own creative devices, I can.
Kaisermikeb - July 25, 2005 06:22 PM (GMT)
hmm, the biggest issue would be making sure it was an anime fanfic. An original world with original characters who happen to have japanese names and say things like "baka" randomly amidst otherwise fluent English still doesn't really qualify as a fanfic to me.
It would need a direct tie to at least one anime. The question is, what is a direct tie?
Does having ether streams and grappler ships tie it to Outlaw Star? Maybe.
Does putting original characters onboard the STF1 count? Definatly, especially if the timeline is intact.
Does making a character a Sayin work? Possibly.
Thoughts on how to make sure it's clear?

I'd say we'd have to exclude ALL 'original' works, making it clear that the writing MUST be about an anime series/movie and MUST include the characters with NO OCs. It must be made clear in the contest rules that this is so.
Even poetry can be written about an anime series and from a character's POV.
And the must include the standard disclaimer, 'I do not own..... yada.... yada... this is for purely entertainment purposes only and involves not profit on my part."
Will this work?
