...I was laughing at this the other day. Not only did you steal Matsuricon's layout, you managed to screw it up. Plus, the amount of information on the website is extremely sparse (IE, why don't you have events detailed out on the main page, instead of smatterings of half-baked info on the forums?) And the fact that the only way you accept money orders is highly suspicious, to me - at least with paypal, the attendee has a way to get their money back if you guys turn out not to be legit (because, sorry man, to be honest this kind of popped up out of nowhere.)
And man, if you're a conchair, representing your con, please use decent grammer? I spent about a minute there blinking in confusion because I thought you had called Eyeshine a local band.
(haha, good luck showing those Miyazaki films by the way! Hope you have good lawyers ;p)

It is completely your fault that you're bad at typing. You are the one at the keyboard hitting the freaking keys!
And you better be good at typing because you represent the convention, and your appearance right now is daft at best.
Honestly though, conventions don't just pop up like this, unless they're really trying to run themselves into the ground on the first go.
bluenigma - May 1, 2008 06:19 AM (GMT)
Rakuen speaks the truth.
Bad advertising is bad. The conchair is necessarily a representative of the convention. What you're telling me by the way you type is that this convention is unorganized, unintellectual, and run by and for Adult Swim shonen fanboys. Not interested.
Now Mike, on the other hand, is a pedophile. Much more interesting.
Codi - May 1, 2008 06:46 AM (GMT)
There isn't any excuse for stealing another local con's website down to the color scheme, or stealing a random photo of Tokyo. And if your webmaster is always busy and isn't local, find a new one.
I haven't heard of this con until just now, and it's way too close for me to even begin asking for time off of work. If I had heard of this con say, at Sugoicon or Ohayocon, I'm sure people (and myself) would have been able to plan for it. But coming out of nowhere with advertising, having lazy, inexcusable grammar, and a stolen website does nothing to make me give this a second look. Good luck, and God speed.

Wow guys, way to be dicks right off the bat!
Of course your points are valid, this convention does not appear to have its shit together yet, but you could at least show a little support for a fledgling con. After all... it's still ran by anime fans, and someone is going to end up eating a lot of debt if it goes sour.
animeesh: It is ENTIRELY your responsibility to learn how to type correctly. Saying it's not your fault you can't take the time to look at the damn screen, or to at the very least copy paste from word so it auto-spellchecks is rediculous. We mock normal civilians for typing like a 14 year old here, as the representative of a convention it is your DUTY to be held to a higher standard. It's because of stupid shit like this that anime conventions are rarely taken seriously by the venues. Never type anything you don't want to be associated with your convention, or with any convention, as venue reps DO read the forums, and you don't want to make yourself look bad, and I don't want you to make ALL OF US look bad.
In general though, I think Ohio has too many conventions. In general, I think a major reason we had almost no growth this year was because A&G was so close to us, and what with gas prices, people up North were far more inclined to go to a fledgling local convention than to an established one a little farther away. I don't want to see any cons fail, but the more conventions that spring up, the more we are going to see them start to go bankrupt. Older cons will bank on more growth than they get, and as a result over spend and close down, younger cons will die before they get off the ground (as several already have). I don't think the many of the brash start-up con heads realize how much damage this does to the reputation of ALL anime cons, nationwide in the eyes of the hotels and venues.

first Id like to say I appreciate everyones honesty I realize that typing wasn't my best subject in school nor my best skill and I realize the con is coming together slowly because it took us a long time to get this started but we are working really hard to make this work and if you just had a second thought about this con maybe you wouldn't think were unorganized and say hey that was one of the best cons ever anyway we appreciate the feedback It'll help us become a better con but like I said before I hope alot of people can make it cause this is a must for bleach fans.

Johnny does put on a great panel indeed. But the type of panel we have in store includes him, Derek Stephen Prince,Stephanie Sheh and hopefully Wendee lee doing an uncensored Bleach panel. Plus a regular Bleach panel about the upcoming movie as well as a Q & A panel.

Hikaruchan - May 4, 2008 02:17 AM (GMT)
Whoever made the forums might want to learn how to spell cosplay also.
http://theforums.knoxcon.org/user/Discussions.aspx?id=97823 has
cosply listed in several places.
When I was working for an anime convention anything I typed was triple checked for spelling. Because what you are typing is what a good majority of your attendees may see as their introduction to the convention. Incorrect spellings and repeated punctuation errors do give a bad first impression of your convention.
animeisha - May 5, 2008 03:52 AM (GMT)
I noticed your web domain was just regisistered less than a month ago. I had thought maybe my friends and I were just out of the loop on this con, and that there had been previous advertisement we had simply missed, but I see that's not the case.
Had you not stolen Matsuricon's site layout, and as a result warranted an article on Matsuri's site regarding that, I probably wouldn't have even heard of your last minute con until now.
It takes months for con goers to make arrangements and plans for attending a con, many have to budget at the beginning of the year, so a month out from the con is a ludicrous amount of time to expect people to make plans with.
Also, I live in Columbus, and I've never even heard of Gambier, Ohio, it's a tiny dot on Mapquest. Any reason for having a con in an area where nearly no one lives? You're an hour from Columbus, 2 hours from Cleveland and Akron, so who are you catering to exactly? Additionally, naming a con after a county is well, just funny. Reminds me of my college in the middle of nowhere Kentucky, where everyone says what county they're from, not what city.
I was initially smelling a scam here, but I see Eyeshine's myspace does in fact have your con listed as a gig, so I guess it's legit. I do agree with Mike though, there's already too many cons in Ohio, ones near actual cities and with established reputations.
I myself would have considered dropping by Knoxcon if the badge costs weren't so high, and it wasn't in the middle of nowhere. With gas prices what they are (and realistically, they could be $.50 higher a gallon by then), there's no chance of me or my local friends going.
If you don't go into total hock for this, next year, try advertising at Ohayocon and choosing a better location, not to mention finding a new webmaster.
KaiserMikeB - May 5, 2008 04:16 AM (GMT)
Although a lot of this is warrented, lets lighten up on them already.
After all, we're all in the same fandom, and one of the things that first attracted me to anime fandom back in the late 90's was the sense of kinship that was shared, and the supportive atmosphere. I know nowadays there are a lot of people who seem to be all about factioning, bad talking, spreading rumors, elitism, and just generally being a bitch about things, but that doesn't mean we have to be of that way. They are a small startup event, that shouldn't be a reason to shun them.
Like/respect us, or not, by posting on these forums you're basically saying that you admit AP is an established convention worth expending effort on, but we started as a one day college event as well, and we certainly made a lot of dumbass mistakes early on. Maybe nothing as extreme as flying in expensive guests when you shouldn't be banking on more than 50 people showing up, but we made a lot of dumbass mistakes all the same. Sure they completely stole the website from the next-nearest convention to theirs, but at least they have a domain, something we didn't in 05.
Yuffie - May 5, 2008 12:05 PM (GMT)
I actually have to give kudos to them for having the con where it is. True, it's not a big location, and should they expect it to turn them into a big con, well, no.
But as someone who kinda lives in the middle of nowhere, I know how frusterating it is to have to drag myself all the way to Columbus whenever I want to go to a con--at the closest. Personally, I'd love there to be a con in Dayton, but despite even having a convention center, it won't happen because it's not a big draw.
So yeah, you guys have made mistakes, but kudos for doing something that most people won't dare, and for people who probably have the same frusteration I do about location--giving them a con that won't be so hard to get to as one in a big place might be.
And really, while stealing layouts aren't cool, all out bashfests don't make you look good either.

Thanks I really appreciate that but to tell you the truth I think it can be a big con on account of the venue can hold up to 7000 people a day. And Kenyon College the location of the con is historical its been around sence 1840 and alot of famous people have gone there why just recently Jamie Lee Curtis made an apperence there.

bluenigma - May 14, 2008 02:24 PM (GMT)
...
Please stop being so foolish.
Granted, it's unlikely that the Matsuricon people would jump straight to litigation, but you did cross the line there. There's no magic 10% rule. Your site was rather obviously copied and derived from Matsuricon in a non-trival manner. And as the con chair, it's very likely you would be named a defendant in such a lawsuit.
Human after all - May 14, 2008 04:27 PM (GMT)
Actually, if I remember correctly, website design elements actually can't be copyrighted. I could take the ESPN website design (minus the logos) and use it for my own site. However, it's in very bad taste, especially when promoting something very similar (in this case a con).
animeisha - May 14, 2008 07:08 PM (GMT)
Well, this con is still reeking of fail, especially since those in charge of act their shoe size and not their age.
Here's an email I got out of the blue from Knoxcon's Co-Chair:
Well as soon as I read you went to college in Kentucky that answered all my questions about you. By the way Gambier, Ohio is the home of Kenyon College. Kenyon is ranked 3 in the nation behind Yale and Harvard in academics. One semester at Kenyon is more than you spent on your whole education. I think you got ripped off what ever you spent. Kentucky, please. I'm looking forward to NOT meeting you. I'll tell Johnny & Steph about your kind e-mails. You can e-mail me @ keywestkurt@yahoo.com .
Sincerly yours
Kurt Eshelman
Co- chair
It should be noted I never sent any of them emails, and also, aside from copying Matsuricon's website design, they also copied Ohayocon's cosplay rules word for word, and I sincerely doubt they had permission to do so.
Aren't you guys just itching to go to this 'convention' now?
Yuffie - May 14, 2008 07:36 PM (GMT)
...do you know nothing about law? First off, if you are sued, the suer will probably sue every possible person they can find responsible. And that 10% stuff as a defense? Hope that judge or jury agrees, because even if there's a law supporting, it is not black and white, and in that case would be difficult to prove. Even if you win, the lawyer costs won't be pretty. Simply, just admit you messed, apologize, and move on.
And Animeisha? If you got that sort of e-mail, I'm very sorry as that's incredibly rude. Although you could look that you got a deal in that the amount that you paid for college would have only gotten you a semester if you went to Kenyon.
However, I find pasting a private e-mail on a public forum kinda bad taste, especially since a)you have no way of proving whether you were really sent such an e-mail without more proof. I'm not saying you didn't recieve it, but you can't know. B) Saying they sent you a nasty e-mail would suffice.
Moreover, it's picking a fight publically on the AP forums over a matter that doesn't concern AP. Since it's between you two, it should be kept private, if must be made public, then on knoxcon's forums, not ours.
animeisha - May 14, 2008 07:40 PM (GMT)
No worries, there won't be any 'fight', these people haven't even figured out punctuation yet, I won't do anything but laugh at their rebuttal, and anything negative they say will only make them look worse, so there is no need for me to even reply.
Human after all - May 14, 2008 07:44 PM (GMT)

Animeisha: I already told you once, these forums aren't for the defamation of any convention other than Anime Punch.
Animeesh: Get serious.
Both of you: Get more unique screen names.
Yuffie and Bluenigma: The only thing more obnoxious than fighting like petulant children on forums is people is idiots fighting over how lawsuits work, and who can sue who, or what protection people have from said suing. Even if you know what you're talking about you're still going to be wrong somehow, and it's obnoxious, annoying bullshit to begin with.
All of you quit it, that includes the illiterate elitists, the needlessly critical and angry women, and the quibbling children!
djmaiku - June 20, 2008 03:10 AM (GMT)
So, not to beat around a dead fish, but did anyone go to this convention?
as they say, pictures or it didn't happen.
My two cents:
Being a web developer by day, I can verify that any original code that you can produce is legally yours, and can be copyrighted as long as there are // note tags in your server side code, that's why I always develop in php/mysql or RoR. The reason their site looked so bad was that they copied the display code and not the server side code from matsuricon.org. Other things like embedded flash files or media, even emails showing the development of a site are kosher in court.
