Title: Rave Reviews

djmaiku - April 14, 2008 02:35 PM (GMT)
So, what did you think?

Issues we already know about:
-Lighting being to light (not dark enough) that is a hotel issue that was out of our hands, the lights were turned down as far as legally allowed. Fire codes in most places require a minimum lighting in large rooms to assist with evacuation.

-power outage @~2:45am, it happened, we recovered from it and had a nice water break.

-some issues with feedback in regards to the live guitarist that was playing with Panda.

FYi, I was playing from open until 2:30ish am. Panda & crew played the rest of the evening.

Hope you all enjoyed it!

Breaking it down here:

The initial crowd in the room when it opened was too big. Or maybe it seemed that way, because there were at least ten people throughout the evening who would run RIGHT into me while I was raving. Not running around or shuffling at this point, just standing in one place. Seriously, that is fucking rude. No, no, no. Also, I know you might want to dance with me, but the proper way to do that is NOT to come up behind me and begin grinding against my butt, people. I don't know you. Please don't do that.

As for the music.

Maiku, man, you know I usually like your sets, but there were a lot of seriously overplayed songs therein this year. Sandstorm? Seriously? Out of the three hundred thousand trance songs out there in the ether, you had to play Sandstorm. And I love Castles in the Sky, but I've also heard it at basically every con rave I've gone to for the past seven years. The transitions were fine, and I did enjoy the Sailor Moon theme remix. How could I not, lol.

Panda. You already know what I'm going to say as I said it to you immediately afterwards, but damn, man. Thanks for a good time. I wouldn't have been doing any footwork or shuffling if it weren't for you! (So, in a roundabout way, it's your fault my feet are still hurting two days later.) "Superstar DJ" always makes me dance.

Of course, it has been declared that PandaXP has some kind of strange curse that both years the power has cut after the first song... Bad luck. Thanks for watching over my snazzy hat.

Sandstorm is a classic. And it's props to Darude, who was playing in Columbus on Friday! I wanted to go, but duty called.

Also handing it to Panda. I'm still sore as hell and had to call in sick to work. You rock, buddy.

Also, Noah is a beast on guitar. That was awesome.

the darude show is not the exact reason I played that, or any of the other standards I played. You have to understand that the majority of people that go to con dances aren't people that normally go to clubs. Therefore, since standard club hits are the majority of what they know, they are happy with hearing that. It's usually at cons that have more than one dance where I play exclusively non-familiars, colossalcon being the next of those. AT LEAST the sandstorm I played was my original breakbeat remix of the song and not the 8 minute ordinary 135bpm version.

In terms of Darude being in town (and yeah, I'm sad I missed it), Ferry Corsten is also in town this week and I'll be hitting up that show.

For the 9 or 10 standards I did play though, that only accounted for 1/3 of my set, I played plenty of out of the ordinary and japanese trance and hardcore tracks as well. IE, my anime/J portion with sailor moon, evangelion, black lagoon and 4 other original J-trance tracks.

Bottom line - In terms of music selection, you have to think of the large picture when you're a DJ. It's hard to please everyone's ears, and I apologize that I didn't.

ya i hand it to panda too man u should come to every rave! (i was the one of the twins who break danced at the rave)and i really apericiate the beats especially when u need a good 1 for breakin!

i thought it was good. i mean it was suppose to be done at 3am, yet it was going on well after that. other then the music crapping out for a second there(on a technical standpoint) it was good.

Of course I know that, but there's also the ravers to consider, and there were a lot of ravers at the con. Panda's set didn't lose any of the regular congoers, and there was only, what, one "anime" song? Just because they're anime fans and not ravers doesn't mean they want to hear the same songs at every con they attend. Part of the fun of raving is having to adapt to beats you don't know ahead of time. Even if I wasn't a raver and I didn't listen to a lot of electronica, etc, I would STILL be tired of hearing the same songs at every con.

(Notice I didn't bitch about The Whistle Song, because that was funny and rarely gets played. Sure, it was in a DDR mix once, but it still isn't too overplayed.)

I didn't hate your set, Maiku, don't get me wrong. I just wanted some variety. It wouldn't be a review if I just said yeah, sure, it was all great. Gotta point out the negatives too.

I had fun. Even with earplugs my head hurt. I hope you guys liked the Bass level. Even though I don't/won't dance, everyone looked like they had fun. I have a bunch of pics from the dance I will post soon.

So, thanks go to the DJ's who made the sunday morning rock!

tek538 - April 14, 2008 09:48 PM (GMT)
I thought the added guitar to PPK - Resurrection was pretty cool. I love the song and it meshed well together! And mad props for having Barthezz - On The Move on the playlist too, I've never heard that song at a club or rave and I about dropped one when I heard it!

You guys rock!

Voodoo Trucker - April 14, 2008 10:55 PM (GMT)
Maiku, I missed a large portion of your set because I just cant handle bubbly anthem trance, BUT what I was there for I compliment you on knowing how to beat match properly and the Whistle Song was fun as hell to dance to.

Panda, you're my rock & roll blood brother, you know what I thought of your set. *respek knuckles*

AlwaysDreamer - April 15, 2008 02:16 AM (GMT)
Hell yeah, the rave was awesome. I'm proud to say that I was still in the room when it ended and they had to kick me out. o_____o

But where was everyone?! The room emptied out so quickly :(

Shadow Link - April 15, 2008 02:28 AM (GMT)
Yeah, everyone like fled around 2:30-3ish. I guess they all went to bed.

Awesome rave guys. Still sore from the bottom of my feet to even a minor headache! Had school today AND Tae Kwon Do today. I'll be sore as heck but it was worth it ;)

AlwaysDreamer - April 15, 2008 02:30 AM (GMT)
Lol, seriously! It hurts to laugh and move. I went to see Horton Hears a Who today and almost died from laughing too hard o______o

rpb3000 - April 16, 2008 01:35 AM (GMT)
Oi, now I'm really sad that I missed the rave. Sounds awesome compared to the standard con fare from what you all are saying. Alas, I decided a few hours of sleep was more worthy of my time. Something's wrong with me -_-
