Eh, since I'm nervous, I'll say it this once.
Basically, we do not encourage cosplay outside of anime. If you have problem, I'm sorry, but that's just how ap rolls.
AP staff does ask, and enforce that you a)Don't talk about cosplaying non-anime, and B) Don't encourage other people to do it.

Also, lolita by any definition is not "sexy". Trust me, I've been in the gothic lolita business since 2001.
Basically, if you wanna do any kinda j-fashion stuff, that's fine, but we're not going to endorse it, and definitely advise not wearing such.

Oh lordy :P I haven't been able to do it in a while, heh.
I guess what I mean in my previous post is that I don't personally care if people dress up in their vis kei/lolita/ganguro/steampunk stuff. However I'm not going to count it as "cosplay" by any means and sanctify a photoshoot (or even encourage it - but people have a right to wear clothes, heh) for people dressing up in fashions.
Now, if someone was to cosplay Petit Cossette or Hazuki from Tsukiyomi.. or even Ran from Super GALS then by all means!

Does that mean I can go as a lolita? xD
Codi - January 28, 2008 10:01 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't advise it since ya know, we're trying to go against that. :P But hey, I've seen some male-lolitas before so.. yeah. XD

Me in a skirt.. The thought of that even frightens me. <<

Go all out. It's only embarrassing if you make a half assed attempt to look girly. Set your hair in pigtails with purple ribbons. Wear thigh high stockings. Put lots of pink things, frilly things, and pink frilly things all over the costume. Carry a dollfie that's dressed up as another loli. Remember to have someone make sure your make-up is done right.

Yeah, Vincent. You've got a good support network here if you want to go through with it.
We'll make sure your lip gloss is poppin'.

Why not endorse the wearing of things not anime?
- prepares to get :takeout: -
Can a person not enjoy anime and also other aspects of Japanese culture? Why say 'Well you can dress in this way if it's directly out of this and such anime"? Can't you embrace the concept of where parts of the film come from, without it being directly related to it?
Why call it a 'revolution' if you only support one idea?

Because as far as anime cons go that IS a revolution. As has been said in the past, most ANIME conventions have become anything-moderately-japanese-in-origin conventions. We like to keep our revolution pure. Except for the jailbait.
Codi - February 1, 2008 02:49 PM (GMT)
Well, not to be an ass, but if you've read our website and looked over our forums, our "revolution" is in being strictly focused on anime. The fact you're challenging this makes me think you're not on the same wavelength.
Hey, I'm a gothic lolita through and through (like I stated, I've been doing it for 7 years now), I'm also a gamer, a j-music enthusiast, I quote 4chan, and would love to sit down and watch live action Japanese/Korean horror films with you. However, come Punch time, I collect myself, respect, and realize what got me started in the first place - anime. I put aside everything else and recognize the art form that brought me to liking all the other things I do. That in itself is a revolution.
We're not stomping our feet down and throwing a hissy fit if people don't comply, because not everyone always will. Some people go to cons to just have fun or see friends, and that's cool, that's what it's all about. However it's times like this when people challenge us (sometimes intentionally) by starting a Kingdom Hearts/Final Fantasy cosplay thread or Vis kei panel thread where my work feels disrespected.
That's all I'm going to say ^_^ Also locking this thread now because the original poster ist weg, and has lost its meaning.
KaiserMikeB - February 1, 2008 04:19 PM (GMT)
They are correct. This is the anime convention. A lot of anime fans feel like they are losing their place at other anime-cons, or that the only actual anime most people have heard of are Naruto, Inu Yasha, and Gravitation. Anime Punch is THE convention for hardcore anime fans.
To look at it in another light: Many anime fans are fans of Star Trek, but we don't have any star trek panels. Many like Star Wars, but we don't say "Bring you're awesome Vader mask". Many like Harry Potter, but we don't give a shit about Gildaroy Lockheart slash. A lot of anime fans like MSI, but we certainly don't invite them as a musical guest. Anime itself was inspired by Di$ney, and we fucking hate those guys!
If you are interested in Lolita fashion, Ohayocon has a terrific lolita event. Colossalcon does to, Sugoicon and Ikasucon both have lolita tea parties. I beleive that Matsuricon has some event as well. Two of those cons are IN OUR CITY, and Sugoi and Colossal are both less than 2 hours away.
Go to them, they are great cons, and odds are some of my staffers will be the ones hosting the lolita stuff, so you know they will be quality panels/events.
I'm unlocking the thread, if you still wish to argue, you can do it until you are blue in the face. If you are the head-strong type, you're just going to wear that stuff anyway, and at the con we won't say a damn thing about it. But please understand that we have reasons for this, and that we are trying to do something unique. We hope that you can respect our request and our focus.
Thank you.

I'd just like to throw out there that, if you'll look at my cosplay.com profile, you will see that out of the six completed costumes I have, only two of them are from an anime. Of my planned costumes, two of the six are from video games. I love video games, I'm a gamer, it's part of who I am and sometimes I just like the costume designs from them more than those from anime.
That said, I'm making myself a fresh-batch of anime based cosplay for this convention, because I wish to hold up the ideals of Anime Punch and encourage people by example to cosplay from anime instead of games and such.
We're not haters, my god, we love as many dorky aspects of japense, sci-fi, and fantasy culture as the next person in our fandom, but sometimes a little focus is a good thing as well. I wish folks would realize that by encouraging a little restriction, we are hoping to encourage greater creativity WITHIN that restriciton.
Yuffie - February 1, 2008 07:27 PM (GMT)
You know, why don't we pin a thread in the cosplay forum explaining why AP is anime only, and such so everytime someone complains about it, we can link them there and not have to rewrite it all the time?
Vincent - February 4, 2008 01:41 PM (GMT)
I would agree, but as it is now if they didn't read the website and figure it out, why would they read a thread telling them the same things? ><
Oh well, we can always try it. Anything to get the word out!

You made a really good point, Vincent.

That isn't lolita, so maybe you should start a new thread for it? I might make a Gainax thread here even..
