Title: A new show from Masaaki Yuasa!

Was reading Anime news network and stumbled across this very good news:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-...ame-yuasa-kaibaThat's right, the man who is quite possibly the most innovative animation filmmaker in the world is coming out with a new tv show! I don't think it will be out in time for punch, or it may in fact be something like Gurren Lagaan last year where we will show previews of it to interested audiences and urge them to watch it...
I heard that his last show kemonozume didn't do so well, and despite the most valiant efforts of the few people who have seen it, Mindgame still only has a cult following (a growing one though).... I was frankly surprised to see a new project out from him so soon, particularly a tv show from the same studio.
I decided to check out anipages daily's forums since I knew they'd be all over it, and of course Peter Chung (a forum regular and of course the guy who did Aeon Flux in the early 90s) had something interesting to say about Madhouse (which pretty much sums up why I consider them one of the better studios in Japan):
| QUOTE |
asked Mr. Maruyama the question of how Madhouse was able to produce so many projects every year, considering how unconventional (I didn't say uncommercial, but he got my meaning, I think) some of them are. He had a sheepish smile and confessed that when very talented people like Yuasa (or Hosoda or Kon) have projects they want to make, he simply can't refuse to accommodate them. For him, I've always felt that it was not money, prestige, popularity, or even the films themselves that drives his efforts. He loves working with talented artists. He respects them, and in turn, they will walk on hot coals not to let him down.
It's not a matter of "spare money lying around". When a director and a team of artists say they are willing to work long hours to make a personal project for a low budget, a producer can see that either as a business risk, or as great value for the amount spent. (How do you attach a price tag on creativity?) What do producers produce? There are producers I've met who thought the job of a producer was to produce money. That the films are just the means to achieve that goal. Others, like Maruyama, never forget that it is the other way around. |

This show was actually released around the time the con was going on...
I've seen a raw and it looks beautiful, very retro but at the same time, very cutting edge like one would expect from the guy who did Mindgame.
Here is the astonishingly beautiful intro for you to enjoy:

We mentioned this in the "Upcoming Anime" panel on Friday. Thanks for posting it here, though, as it'll probably get more exposure than the 6 people that were there. Heh.
By the way, since your post didn't directly mention the name of the show:
KAIBA. WATCH IT.

It's not out yet. <_< Or if it is, it's just one episode that hasn't been fansubbed.

Awww. You gave me high hopes sir! Well I can't wait for it's release and hopefully a good fansub. I gotta say I haven't seen an art style like that in awhile it's refreshing.

I can't believe I didn't mention the title anywhere... I was really tired, 6 hours of driving after a whole weekend of con staffing does that...
Art Style: I think its really weird that Satoshi Kon's (see thread I'm about ready to post) newest work at the same exact time is also going for retro, I predict in a year Hiroyuki Imaishi (Dead Leaves) will do the same, but make it far more popular in anime fan culture :P.
Plot (courtesy of reading animesuki's forums):
| QUOTE |
(In the world of Kaiba) It is now possible to store memory data, so that the death of your body is not actually "death". As memories are stored in databanks, they can be "transferred" to new bodies. Because so-called "memory trading" now occurs, it is now possible to steal memories and illegally alter them.
Society has fallen apart as authority has become lost and stagnant.
One day, a man awakens in a ruined room. His name is Kaiba. He has no memories, but he does have a pendant with a picture of an unknown woman inside...
In the skies a mysterious cloud of electricity floats, stalking the streets to hunt for memories.
After suddenly being attacked, Kaiba escaped into space, and during his travels meets all sorts of people and regains his memories. Throughout it he continues to be troubled by the world's problems, as well as his own existence. And what of the woman in the pendant, Neiro?
"What am I? Who are you? What are you? Who am I?"
When these two meet again, what will happen? |
(thanks to BluWacky from those forums for the translation from WOWOW's official website).

One day, a man awakens in a fancy room. His name is Kaiba. He has no memories, but he does have a pendant with a picture of a little boy inside...
In the skies a mysterious cloud of electricity floats, stalking the streets to hunt for memories, and all of a sudden shoots a deck of cards at Kaiba.
After suddenly being attacked by the cards, Kaiba escaped into New Jersey, and during his travels meets all sorts of people and animals. Throughout it he continues to be troubled by the world's problems, fixing them with his magical deck of super cards.
