Title: Anime to watch for Whose Line
Description: Need suggestions

Rakuen - November 27, 2007 07:41 PM (GMT)
Well, now that I'm the official Procurer of Anime for Ben and Joe, I need suggestions for stuff to watch. It shouldn't be a surprise that it needs to be something with either good characters or a good framework. People also have to have actually watched it (so right about now would be the cutoff for a new series in Japan). Short series would be great, as many of the longer series will likely be viewed as a sampler for now. Dubbed is also a plus (usually).

Also don't be afraid to suggest something they might have seen before, because I haven't necessarily seen it. You can see what I've personally watched in my
Anime Planet profile below. It's not a whole lot.

I also know I'm way over ambitious; there's no way in hell we're going to get everything watched in the next four months. Or year for that matter. Maybe five...

KaiserMikeB - November 27, 2007 10:45 PM (GMT)
There are several anime out there that you just sort of need to know about, not necessarily watch. Seeing one or two episodes of Fruits Basket or Ouran Highschool Host club tells you all you need to know about the show. Since they are both popular with the girlies it's good to know, but since they are also both pretty terrible shows I wouldn't recommend watching all of them.

Of course, big titles like Eva, Akira, Gundam, Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing, Tenchi, anything that was on TV and popular, etc.

Rakuen - November 27, 2007 11:10 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I've watched or read enough of the most popular anime to know what's going on (it's not a quantifiable amount though). I'm pretty sure Ben/Joe/Nathan have seen all of them.

I'll grab the first four episodes of Ouran and Fruits Basket next. I've been told Ouran has been requested at every show for the last year.

Lothlin - November 27, 2007 11:14 PM (GMT)
......I like Ouran <.<

That said, I still think it's better to reference the older stuff, simply because a lot of the very new stuff hasn't gotten around to reaching quotable cult-status yet. Sure, some jokes around it are fine, but that said, too much of it and the audience is going to be COMPLETELY LOST.

Besides the most popular stuff that's airing on Adult Swim and Toonami, past and present (which, honestly, I think is the stuff that gets brought up most when Kyo asks for suggestion,) there's a few newer ones. Hrm. Ouran, Fruits Basket, Air Gear (Maybe, it's gaining popularity,) Kingdom Hearts, Bleach, Death Note...

*shrugs* I dunno. I think the folks who are saying that more recent stuff needs to be referenced more just really don't understand the show. Sure, I could joke about, I dunno, Claymore or Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei all day, but does that mean the audience, who in all likelihood don't watch that many fansubs that aren't ZOMGPOPULAR (IE, Death Note or Ouran Host Club), are going to get those jokes?

EDIT: Everything I can imagine around Ouran either involves insane fangirls or gratuitous yaoi posing.... wait, NOW I see why it gets requested so much!

Rakuen - November 27, 2007 11:37 PM (GMT)
The way I see it, is that if I'm ahead of the game, they'll still be slightly lagging behind. :lolguy:

Actually I'm thinking even a bit further ahead here than just AP, because I know once summer rolls around, anime viewing will pretty much go out the window for the boating season. I'd like to try and hit some things that are picking up speed now in preparation for conventions in the second half of the year.

Lothlin - November 27, 2007 11:42 PM (GMT)
Fair enough XD

Ah, Lucky Star is gaining in popularity I hear. Haven't watched it yet myself. What else... *checks fansub.tv*

....maybe D-gray man?

Rakuen - November 27, 2007 11:49 PM (GMT)
I edited my post after you posted, so I'll just move it down here.

I also think that knowing these other series isn't necessarily a bad thing. While you can't base an entire scene around it without it falling flat, you can pull little things out of it. You can make a passing reference to Seto no Hanayome (ex: mermaid yakuza  ) and get a laugh, while the people that have actually seen it get an extra kick out of it. In short, humor on multiple levels.

Of course, I'm not actually IN the show, so I can't comment for the cast.

Lothlin - November 28, 2007 12:40 AM (GMT)
True. hehe, mermaid Yakuza, that reminds me, now that I have the whole thing, I need to watch the rest XD

Knowing obscure stuff DOES help for games like party quirks, props, dating game, et cetera, where it's a lot more passing references and weird stuff and a lot less based-around-one-thing. The obscure stuff, I suppose, works less for... hrm, scenes from a hat, questions... uh... and my brain died.

*shrugs* Mind, sweeping generalizations don't cover every eventuality, of course.

GAHHH, why do I have so much trouble remembering the names of these games sometime? XD

Rakuen - November 28, 2007 03:13 AM (GMT)
I just thought to look for it, and sure enough, there's a Whose Line wiki.

http://idiotsite.com/WLWiki/index.php?title=WLGames

I also got a hard-copy of the Sugoi show, so hopefully I'll be able to get that up at some point.

Lothlin - November 28, 2007 04:11 AM (GMT)
No kidding. Neato! Well, now I know what's going to be distracting me for the rest of the night XD.

Was the sugoi show videotaped?

Rakuen - November 28, 2007 04:33 AM (GMT)
Joe gave me a bag with two cameras tonight, I hope they didn't forget to turn BOTH of them on. I'll check them tomorrow.

Actually, I'm more worried about sound quality than no video.

Lothlin - November 28, 2007 04:41 AM (GMT)
Yeah, the shows kind of fall flat when you can't hear them XD. I've got a few tapes of ohayo last year, short ones, but unfortunately my camera didn't pick up the sound well at all.

Rakuen - November 28, 2007 05:45 AM (GMT)
Okay, I checked the tapes. Sound quality is great, even for the people without mics. The first hour is excellent and right down the middle, the second hour is from a different camera shooting over the crowd, so the view is a little obstructed, but I think we'll use it anyway. I got to get a firewire cable tomorrow to transfer it to this laptop and start cutting the file.

Additionally, the laws of the internet have been upheld in this thread.

vamninrate - November 29, 2007 09:00 PM (GMT)
I know that the columbus library has some anime DVD's, but the quality on some of them is so-so, but its realy up to you. A few more ideas for stuff you could get quotes from are Cowby Bebop, Hellsing (idk if its gotta be pg or not), DBZ?, Ghost in Shell, Digemon or mabie Pokeymon.

Rakuen - November 30, 2007 04:28 AM (GMT)
This is the censored show, so yeah, PG. But you can tone just about anything PG-13 to that level if needed.

Also, I don't live in Ohio. I live 400 miles away in the middle of Illinois. The cast lives 200 miles away in Indianapolis. So stuff in Columbus isn't really going to help. That said, I think there's some law that says to go to an anime convention you have to have seen at least one episode from all of those series (even if unwillingly). Try to think a bit more out of the box. ;)

Lothlin - November 30, 2007 02:13 PM (GMT)
I dare you to watch all of Seto no Hanoyome. DARE YOU.

....I want to be able to discuss mermaid yakuza with SOMEONE else.

Rakuen - November 30, 2007 03:41 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I got it downloaded. I don't know if anyone else is going to watch it, but I'll probably watch it after Azumanga.

Lothlin - November 30, 2007 09:36 PM (GMT)
Woohoo! XD

I've been watching Fansub.tv, trying to find good stuff coming out. Downloaded most of Romeo x Juliet, though I'm sad I missed gurren laggen before it got taken down x.x

Lothlin - December 1, 2007 07:01 AM (GMT)
Hey, I want to. I don't know anyone down here that has it though x.x.

That said, it's not high on my list to buy. It falls behind Gankutsuo, which I hope I get for christmas, X/1999, the final volume of Samurai 7, and.. well, I know there was something else, but my brain has ceased to function.

That said, I need a higher-paying job.

lol thats kinda what I was going for, I just kinda thought about what Ive seen. lolz, that and I was just sayin cause no one had pointed them out yet (even if they were obvious) ;p

Lothlin - December 1, 2007 05:37 PM (GMT)
The problem with that is, all of those are not only older, they're stuff that usually gets referenced A LOT in the Whose Line shows. Dunno about the censored one, but at least in Kyo's panels, DBZ and Pokemon are already brought up too much. For pete's sake, there's a game, 'expressions of a pokemon!' XD

Last Exile

I have to check if I can pull it off their EHDD when I go up there next weekend. I suppose I could get it again, but I have other things I need to burn bandwidth on first.

And as far as DBZ goes, both shows had a scene revolving around it.

Rakuen - December 4, 2007 06:05 AM (GMT)
Double post.

Videos from Sugoicon are up.

Also, the plan is to get Haruhi watched this weekend. Maybe a few episodes from some other anime too.

vamninrate - December 5, 2007 01:56 AM (GMT)
lolz whats up with the mouse traps?

Rakuen - December 5, 2007 03:59 AM (GMT)
There's 91 mousetraps on the floor, they have to walk around doing the scene blindfolded. What's not to get. :P

There's actually supposed to be 100, we started with over 120 and we ended up with 91 after breaking a bunch of them setting up (you can hear some of that on the party quirks video).

This is not Biggs - December 5, 2007 10:46 AM (GMT)
I subscribed your little channel.

Rakuen - December 5, 2007 03:32 PM (GMT)
Congratulations for subscribing to one of the least updated channels on Youtube.

Well, I guess I could ask someone to ask Kyo if he wants a tape of his show at Ohayocon. Or maybe I could tape one of Joe's panels. I dunno, just something in between now and AP.

Lothlin - December 6, 2007 01:04 AM (GMT)
I'll ask him for you, but I can almost guarentee he'll say yes to videos XD You're going to be at Ohayocon, then?

KaiserMikeB - December 6, 2007 02:38 AM (GMT)
The thing about the uncensored show is that there are things said that I don't necessarily want video taped evidence to exist of, least of all online!

:P

Rakuen - December 6, 2007 03:02 AM (GMT)
Right now Joe is definitely supposed to be going, he's got three panels (RPG, Con Dos-and-Don'ts, and one other one). I don't know if I'm going for certain, but there's possibly a badge up for grabs right now.

Also, Ohayocon staff said that Kyo's doing both censored and uncensored shows this year, so it's not like uncensored would HAVE to be taped. But I could always try and figure out how to rip the audio stream out of a WMV and then fade it out.

Actually, I don't even know if Ben would let me take the camera and tripods.

Lothlin - December 6, 2007 06:14 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I was thinking about having the censored show taped, not the uncensored one! I agree, I don't think I would WANT that one taped. Pictures are one thing, but I'd be a little worried about too much video of uncensored getting on the internet, just because it could be taken out of context and come back to bite us in the ass.

vamninrate - December 7, 2007 03:41 AM (GMT)
Yeah people like to blow things out of proportion.

Rakuen - December 7, 2007 03:51 AM (GMT)
They ruin it for the rest of us. :takeout:

Rakuen - December 18, 2007 05:17 AM (GMT)
Update from this weekend.

First off, as of right now Ben will also be attending Ohayocon. I still don't know if I'm going or not for certain.

We watched all of Haruhi. Overall it was good, but Koizume annoys the hell out of us. Seriously, I don't think characters in Harry Potter have monologues as long as his. <_< Also, episode 13 (Ep 9 broadcasted) was really weak.

Then we started on Solty Rei. We got through episode 7 before we ran out of time. Hopefully it'll be finished next time I go up there.

Today while everyone was out of the house I caught up on F/SN. So we're all ready for episode 17 now.

Additionally, we built a ramp and rail in the backyard and there's a video somewhere of them skiing, snowboarding, and sleding on it. I just have to find it. :)

Lothlin - December 18, 2007 07:02 AM (GMT)
Wooohooo, Ben!

Tell him, if he doesn't show up for the Whose Line panels, I'll find him and do dasterdly things to him ;p. Not that he WOULDN'T show up for the panels.

Rakuen - December 19, 2007 03:21 AM (GMT)
Yeah, he'll be there. Joe will be there too if his panels don't conflict with it. I told him last week to send staff an email to ask not to schedule them at the same time, but I don't know if he did it.

Though I do have to ask, is the Uncensored show really 4 hours this time?

Lothlin - December 19, 2007 03:32 AM (GMT)
Dunno. I'd have to ask Kyo, but I don't know if he knows yet. Last time I talked to him, he didn't know what times the panels were scheduled for.

...Maybe though? Ohayocon is big, so we're guarenteed to get people there, and it's not like there's anything afterwards. So, honestly, I could see it happening.

Jnkolm - January 21, 2008 03:38 AM (GMT)
*power bump*

I used to have a list of "popular" anime to use for our show, most of it was bunk that people should've known better then to list and the rest of it I knew about, much to my surprise. Someday I'll watch a bit of Ouran when I visit, Rakuen. If you've got any around. And Cromartie, since I didn't last time.

Is Prince of Tennis fairly popular? I remember seeing a lot of cosplayers and hearing of it for a few cons, then it dissappeared. I dunno if I'd want to watch much of it, but still.
