Title: Question about Yaoi
Torouh - October 5, 2007 08:38 PM (GMT)
I was wondering if you had to be over the age of 18 to get into the yaoi anime showings late at night. One of my friends said that she got into one while I was at the rave one year (She dosent dance) But i thought i saw a staff member standing outside keeping underaged people out. I know that someone wouldnet let me into the Henti olympics two years ago, but i think he was just a cosplayer messing with my head. lol
So can we too-mature-for-our-age teens get into the yaoi and yuri anime screenings?? Pretty Please??
Lothlin - October 6, 2007 02:35 AM (GMT)
Um.
No.
Sorry, there's no way for us to know that you're too mature for your age, the age restrictions are there for a reason. Same goes for the NC-17 Whose Line panel, Hentai Olympics, whatever. We don't want a bunch of angry parents coming after us because we let underage folks into the adult-oriented panels.
Torouh - October 6, 2007 02:39 AM (GMT)
Eh thats fine. ^^
Cant blame a fan-girl for trying. lol
rpb3000 - October 6, 2007 04:27 AM (GMT)
I still wonder about the feasibility of a parental permission form.
Lothlin - October 6, 2007 02:42 PM (GMT)
Hrm. I hadn't even thought of that- has it been brought up before in meetings?
Yuffie - October 6, 2007 04:42 PM (GMT)
That's a cool idea. Even if my parents would never sign. -.-
Yeah, the thing is even if you are really mature teenager, you still are...a teenager.
I've been talking about this to my friends lately. Myself, most people don't even realize I'm as young as I am. I come across as really naaive, but...not my age. And in a lot of cases, I don't act that way. Still, I can only do school up to a Sophmore/Junior lvl, and a lot more prone to cracking under pressure then an adult. Also, being under 18, and living at home, parents have final say on what I do.
Just a thought on the, 'But I'm mature enough' statement.
Torouh - October 6, 2007 07:37 PM (GMT)
I was just joking about the 'too mature' thing.
But i think the permission slip thing would be kinda cool. My paretns would probly sign it. XD
Miccy - October 7, 2007 03:04 PM (GMT)
Concent forms would be good.
But legal? Don't your parents have to be with you for things like this?
My mom would have signed anything, except she's only ever dropped in at Ohayocon. xD;;
Though now I'll be 18, so no problems here. . . except I don't like yaoi, and I'd definely prefere malexfemale action.
Centaura - October 7, 2007 05:29 PM (GMT)
I was wondering about the legality of a parental consent form, myself. I have no idea how those things work.
Torouh - October 7, 2007 05:33 PM (GMT)
As long as it states whats going to be going on (explict sexual content, parents may not find sutibal for children, whatever) then it probly wouldent be much of a legal issue would it? Or is it aginst the law period for minors to watch porn?
Torouh - October 7, 2007 05:58 PM (GMT)
(sorry for the doubble post)
I read in a older post, in the 2006 section, taht the Hentia Olympics had "nothing explicit, just a lot of inuendo and panty jokes!" I think mike said that. But anyway, would we be allowed into THAT then? (i'm reaching for straws now. haha XD)
Centaura - October 7, 2007 06:52 PM (GMT)
I'm trying to find something about it online, but I'm getting nowhere.
I'm not sure what the laws are like concerning actually watching pornographic material underage, though I know it's illegal to purchase any. Been there, tried that, lol'd.
Worse comes to worse, get a fake ID...haha.
Torouh - October 7, 2007 07:44 PM (GMT)
lol as long as you all play dumb. "Amber who? no this is 19 year old Aubrey!!" Haha! :P
Lothlin - October 7, 2007 11:24 PM (GMT)
...x.x no fake IDs, please, that's ILLEGAL. As in, if you run into a staffer that's actually paying close attention to your id, you could end up in big trouble.
Torouh - October 8, 2007 12:09 AM (GMT)
I know i know, sorry i have a weird sence of humor. I'm a lawabiding con-goer!
Centaura - October 8, 2007 12:25 AM (GMT)
I didn't mean it literally. I'm full of bad advice.
In NYC, there are actual shops to get fake IDs, which goes to show how well we uphold the law around here >.> Anyway, don't do it.
Like I said, I doubt the legality of the consent form as well. Honestly, don't be too shocked if you have to miss the yaoi this year...
Then again, I know nothing about the law, so...you can disregard anything I say, ever. XD
Torouh - October 8, 2007 12:28 AM (GMT)
Eh, if all else fails, i'll just have my older friends buy me my own from the dealers room. We'll just have our own Yaoi show in my hotel room. lol
KaiserMikeB - October 8, 2007 05:46 AM (GMT)
Sorry for being slow to the draw.
Remember that Anime Punch isn't just an anime convention, but also an academic symposium. As such, we consider most of our anime screenings to be a public showing of art. Badges are not required to view most of our screenings, and we consider or showings not just to be entertaining, but also educational, and the source material for the academic discourse held at our convention.
As such, no anime that we consider to be a respectable work of art will be carded for. For example, titles such as Akira or Paprika (both of which have nudity and violence) would be open to people of all ages for their overwhelming artistic merrit (much like Schinderlers List being aired on primetime network television completely uncut). Even less powerful works, such as He is my Master, Elfen Lied, and Mahoromatic (all of which also sport objectional material) would be open to all ages due to their influence of their own respective genres, on anime fandom, on anime itself, and for it's insight into the Japanese condition.
Anime Punch does not show anime that is not worth seeing.
For that reason there are almost no shows we card for. An exception to this is the hentai block. While there are Hentai out there that are definiately art, and therefore would be open to all ages, we do not show these titles. The Hentai we show is either utter pornographic smut, or is so terrible it is comical.
Most "Yaoi" titles are not fully explict, and as such even if they weren't worthy of the weighty title of "art", or served as an education resource they would still be appropriate to show to all ages.
Right now we have not started our video programming schedule yet, and as such I don't know if any fully-explicit Yaoi will be shown yet. Once we have decided that, we will try to determine whether their artistic merrit allows for us to not worry about age checks.
Short answer: Yes, you can see the Yaoi
It should be noted here that it is clearly stated on our website that we are a college age anime convention, and as such we set our policies to that standard. We are not babysitters, and responcible parents worried about what their children could be exposed to should read the site before the convention, and keep track of their children durring the con. We provide a wide range of programming open (for the most part) to all of our members. If parents want to limit what their children see it is their responsibility to do so. We are not so presumptious to tell parents what their children can or can't see. We also give a comprehensive list of all of our programming an entire month before the convention, giving parents plenty of time to review the subject matter that will be covered, look up the titles that will be shown, and talk to their kids about what is or isn't ok to see.
In general, we do not censor language, nudity (animated), violence, morality, discussion of sexuality, or adult content. The only thing we do generally censor is explicit sexuality, and even then there may be exceptions for particularly profound works.
Remember though, we do NOT show anything senselessly pornographic to an uncarded audience. Everything shown to uncarded/unbadge-checked audiences is art that is treated as art.
For the record though, we do try to avoid gray areas (which again, is why we don't show respectable hentai).
Lothlin - October 8, 2007 02:44 PM (GMT)
*shrugs*
Mike has the final say I suppose. In my defense, I was considering properly explicit Yaoi when I was thinking of carding <.<
Centaura - October 8, 2007 07:04 PM (GMT)
Well, that settles that, then, doesn't it? X3
Torouh - October 8, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
Yay! *yaoi fangirl squeel*
Thanks for clearing it up mike. Hope to see a Yaoi section in the video rooms this year.
Vincent - October 13, 2007 12:37 AM (GMT)
Mike. You know you want to let us watch it.
Torouh - October 13, 2007 01:43 AM (GMT)
Indeed thats why he's soo cool with the con policy about it. lol
KaiserMikeB - October 14, 2007 08:00 AM (GMT)
Yeah, a lot of people say I'm a jerk, but I like to think I do more good than harm :P
Yuffie - October 14, 2007 12:14 PM (GMT)
Comeon, you're a sweet guy more then a jerk.
Torouh - October 14, 2007 10:58 PM (GMT)
Agreed, I think your great Mike. And thats not just my kiss-ass side showing up. lol
KaiserMikeB - October 14, 2007 11:54 PM (GMT)
Torouh - October 15, 2007 12:42 AM (GMT)
I am a shameless ass-kisser. XDDD
Yuffie - October 15, 2007 01:16 AM (GMT)
Well, he is most of the time.
I got voted most likely to be teacher's pet. o.o I'm obviously one to my German teacher, and kinda one to my English.
Which is funny, because I'm very frank about whether I like a person or not, but at the same time I really do like people.
Codi - October 15, 2007 01:52 AM (GMT)
I think if we show yaoi, it should be the hardcore, mind-fuck, actually good shit like Ai no Kusabi, Fujimi no Orchestra, or the classic Zetsuai 1989/Bronze. None of that wussy Yami no Matsuei stuff.
The thing with that though, is those titles are artistic to some degree (corn cobs = always artistic), but yaoi fangirls and *real* fans of yaoi are night and day sort of thing. Definitely not generalizing here, just saying. (I have a long rant on that XD)
As for Hentai Olympics, should always be 18+.

That bad huh? lol
Centaura - October 15, 2007 03:51 AM (GMT)
Oh, I can't even watch any yaoi at Otakon anymore after that happened that one year with the Gravitation OVA. God, that was awful. It was like a Beatles concert, but with less justification for the screaming.
I would actually be interested if we were to see some artistic yaoi.
I have yet to attend the Hentai Olympics.

Agreed! I've actually been wanting to see Boku no Sexual Harassment. Alas, my roomie's copy is broken.
Yami no Matsui, Gravitation, all of that.. it's not even Yaoi. It's just Shonen-Ai.
KaiserMikeB - October 15, 2007 06:42 AM (GMT)
The hentai olympics isn't an anime, and isn't in the showing room. It is a live event, and as such is treated differently.

And a great event at that!

Dare I ask what exactly it is, or is this one of those "find out for yourself" deals? ...because I will. I haven't been to one yet.
KaiserMikeB - October 18, 2007 03:00 AM (GMT)
We dare not tell you what happens within the Hentai olympics. Such information is found only in titillating rumors and slanderous whispers.
Lothlin - October 18, 2007 03:38 AM (GMT)
And really bad pictures from Fieldcon.
Geidaara - October 19, 2007 11:54 PM (GMT)
I'm no longer even a teenager, so...yea *cries* Oh well. Yaoi and Het rooms would be fun, and I would definitely join in and check it out. As for Yuri, I don't know. My friend might drag me along...and it looks like there might just be a third member of our team too! I'm trying to talk another buddy into coming, but he will have college classes then so...we're trying XD lol
Oh, and this find out for yourself thing sounds fun! I know that I am going to find out just to...well, find out. *^.^*
