Title: Zombie Walk - Columbus, Ohio

amyloveyou87 - May 9, 2007 12:50 AM (GMT)
Anyone know about this? i am a big zombie movie fan, and i have been waiting for along time for the Zombie Walk. If anyone is a fan of zombie movies or just likes to freak people out should go.

What is a Zombie Walk?

A zombie walk (also known as a zombie march) is an organized public gathering of two or more people who dress up in zombie costumes. Usually taking place in an urban centre, the participants make their way around the city streets or through shopping malls in a somewhat orderly fashion and often limping and gnawing their way towards a local cemetary or other public space.

Promoted primarily through word of mouth and online message boards, zombie walks are an underground activity. During the event participants are encouraged to remain in character as zombies and to communicate only in a manner consistent with zombie behavior. This may include grunting, groaning and slurred, moaning calls for 'brains'. It should be noted that zombie behavior is a hot topic of debate. Purists who draw their definitions from the original "Living Dead" films will claim that a Zombie would never have the ability to call for 'brains' and furthermore that a zombie needs only living (or freshly killed) flesh for its sustenance and not the brain in particular.

One of the first zombie walks was held in October 2003, in Toronto, Ontario, with 6 participants. The first widely documented zombie walk occurred in Vancouver, B.C., on August 27, 2005, with over 400 participants. That walk proceeded through the Pacific Centre Mall, travelled on the SkyTrain (referred to for the event as the "SkyBrain" or the "BrainTrain") and continued 35 blocks to the Mountainview Cemetery.

On August 19, 2006 Vancouver and San Francisco held simultaneous Zombiewalks, with zombie walkers surprising people in an Apple store in San Francisco and a beach in Vancouver.

On Buy Nothing Day, November 25, 2006, in Montreal, a crowd of Zombies invaded the downtown core to take part in a "Shopping Spree of the Dead" and ridicule the compulsive aspect of Christmas shopping.

In the largest zombie walk to date, 894 participants gathered at the Monroeville Mall in Pittsburgh, which served as the set of the classic zombie film "Dawn of the Dead", on October 29th, 2006. In addition to an attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records, the event was a benefit for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Organizations like Zombie Squad have used zombie walks to raise awareness for community service events being sponsored such as food drive and blood drives. This is normally associated with blood drives for the American Red Cross as a play on the spread of zombie infection through blood contact as popularized in films such as the 2004 remake of "Dawn of the Dead" and George A Romero's "Land Of The Dead".

Okay, corpses... We got a date...

ZombieWalk Columbus 2008 will be on Saturday June 14th! This year, we're gonna grace the Midwest Haunters Convention / Midwest Fantasy Show with our zombie goodness. We'll start at Goodale like last year, but the path and the time will be different. We could go about it a couple of different ways:

1.) *Long walk. North on High to 5th, then back south on High and across to the convention center, walk through their tradeshow area, check out their monster make-up wars, then back north to Goodale for containment provided by STARS Columbus and to meet your candidates for ZWC 2009.

2.) *Short walk. South on High and across to the convention center, walk through the show, monster make-up wars, then back north to Goodale for containment and to meet the candidates.

NOWWWWWW... Since the afterparty idea turned out to be a topic of such debate, and since the Midwest Haunters Convention happens to be having their body art fashion show, Ms. Scary paegent, and masquerade party at the Hyatt on the same night, I'm gonna suggest that we do that. TONS of horror, TONS of horror people, booze, music, the works. The only issue would be the $40 ticket price... But wait... The gods of MHC have offered ZWC participants a zombie discount and we can get our tickets for only $35. I know, I know, it ain't free, BUT! Theres gonna be heavy hors d' ovres or WHORES DEVOURS!!! Hahaha... I'm pissed that whores devours isn't a band name. Anyway, there will be a DJ, a dance floor, prizes, and hundreds of people in costume. No better time to network and talk to horror professionals about make-up, acting, whatever... I think it's worth it, but as always, it ain't about what I think. Hit me up!

More to come soon!

Hunter of the Sharingan - March 13, 2008 11:17 PM (GMT)
ok, 1. whores devours is gonna be my band when i make one. and 2. wat about those of us under 21... or 18 for that matter...

amyloveyou87 - March 14, 2008 12:13 AM (GMT)
The walk is all ages, the afterparty i belive all ages but ID will be needed to drink.

Hunter of the Sharingan - March 14, 2008 06:30 PM (GMT)
i CAN pass as 18, but i like to be law abiding most of the time lol, thanks again!
