Title: The Resident Newbie
Description: ...or am I?

Alex - April 10, 2007 09:42 PM (GMT)
Over the past few months, I've sort of considered myself the resident newbie. I only started going to the anime club in September, but out of the other new people who came in at that time, I'm easily the most involved one of them. ^_^; I've got this way of horning into other people's groups, really.

But anyways. That being said, this was my first time being on staff, and it was overall pretty damn awesome. My official position was Artist Alley head, though once I actually had my artists checked in and settled at their tables, I didn't have much else to do. So I spent most of the time in ConOps helping Susan, and on occasion, being Susan when she was off doing something. ^_^

I ended up doing three events, all of which I was assigned or asked to do no less than 15 minutes beforehand. ^_^; First one was the Eva Puppet Show, in which I was asked to provide the voice of Misato at the last minute. Took awhile to actually get the puppet stage set up, and once the five of us (Julie, Myself, Endy, Cathy, and Chuck) were actually under there, it was pretty cramped. However, having Tristan carry us through the remaining 20 minutes of the show was pretty damn amusing. XD I definitely hope we have him back next year, with or without a puppet show.

My other two events weren't until Saturday. First was Distraction. About five other people helped out with the questions, especially Yuffie and Chuck. ^_^ KY Jon had the idea for the first round, which was the Jenga round, but I suggested the Nerf guns and the bullhorn siren for the second and third rounds. Once Distraction actually started, it was pretty much a hit. One of the contestants was cosplaying as Naruto, and during the Nerf round, KY Jon shot a bunch of darts at his head, a few of which stuck to the metal part of his Konoha headband. XD

Once I got back from that, it was basically right away when the Kaiser asked if I'd be willing to be manager for the Masquerade. Sure, why not? I didn't need to be back for another 15 minutes or so, so I grabbed some grubbage in the Consuite and ran back to ConOps to be briefed.

Preparing for Cosplay was interesting, as it wasn't that much different from being on stage crew, like I was in high school. Also, standing on chairs and yelling is something that comes like second nature to me. ^_^; And apart from the hitch with #2's audio, the whole thing went really well! My favorite skits were "You Are a Pirate" and "Akatsuki: The Musical," so once the awards were given out, I was pretty pleased. ^_^

Post-Cosplay, I went back to ConOps to chill and be useful until the Protomen concert. Which, I might add, was awesome. And I wasn't even one of the people who'd memorized the lyrics or anything. I'd heard a few songs off and on while over at Mike's during the week before the con, but the show was nonetheless awesome and full of rock.

Sunday, as Lawrence Eng was leaving, he offered a can of chocolate-covered macadamia nuts to ConOps. Since everyone was sort of talking and didn't hear him, I laid claim to the little gems, and they were SO good. I officially love Lawrence Eng now. *swoon*

And apart from the furry incident blowing up Monday, I'd say the con definitely ended on a good note. ^_^; I had a great time. Can't wait for next year. Probably the best thing I got out of it all was that now I actually feel like I'm part of this whole madcap group, not just the new-ish girl. And that's pretty damn awesome.

I'm hoping I can take the place of Resident New Person.

Some of us just have to carry the torch, ya know? :P

Wahahaha!! *squishes* You're absolutely fabulous Alex~

I understand what you mean ^^; I came into this thing rather wet behind the ears, and basically meeting everyone at Ohayocon and when I had attended one of the meetings. (save some of the guys I had met at Sugoicon 05 + 06, and Michael.) But I always received the feeling of open arms, and everyone is super nice. ^_^

And plus you kick ass, hands down. You did a super job in general, and I got SQUISHIES out of you! Hell yeah! We'll have to make AP next year kick some more together!

I remember coming up with the questions that was a lot of fun. Those who were there, if you didn't know the answer to 'What is Hikaru's spirit named in Magic Knights Rayearth, you should ashamed of yourselves! *tease poke tease*

Watching distraction was fun too, although I think I spent most of the time trying to craw into Lothlin's lap. I don't like the cattle prod...

I hope Tristen does come next year, I really love that guy. I was a little surprised that he remembered me though!

Lothlin - April 11, 2007 12:23 AM (GMT)
Lol. My lap is squishy and comfy and gives defense against a cattle prod's innate Aura of Fear

...hell I'm a dork.

Well, damn, I feel like a wet behind the ears newbie too, except moreso XD. Most of the convention I was either DDRing with Dave or off watching rooms. And... probably blocking up the dealers room entry a tad when hoards of fangirls descended upon me and my Miroku cosplay. Eek.

I really can't wait until next year (and I'm so coming to the meeting friday ;p)

If I am able to be on staff, I would adore to be a resident newbie. I can't make it to meetings though. No money, no ride. =\

But I would love to hear first hands how meetings are. ^__^

You should get the rookie staffer of the year award. You kicked ass. You did a great Misato and drew a fantastic Gendo on really short notice.

I think I'm a resident newbie too
staffing a little new to me
I was glad that I was doing the same job
for pretty much the whole con
so what if it was video room superviser :choco:

Miccy - April 14, 2007 01:32 PM (GMT)
I didn't do much in the main staffing room, but this was my 2nd year staffing, and I enjoyed it. :]

>> Damn Chris and FINALLY convincing me to watch video room for 40 minutes. ;~; He ONLY asked me, (in a sad yet desperate Chris face!) to watch it because I told him I hated Video Rooms...and he felt like he HAD to convince me to...and he was desperate, so I did. x3 <~ My funny part of staffing this year.

I was kind of a newbie too, even if it was my second year staffing I never made it to the meetings and ended up running around alot doing a great deal of random jobs (including standing at pre reg that first night for 4 hours) Still fun, even though I got dehydrated on friday haha, it's cuz I didn't realise exactly how much "running" I was actually doing haha.

Congrats on surviving your first staffing con position. Many points and props.

Who knows maybe one day you'll be as involved as some of us are. The psychiatrists call it obsession.

Alex - April 19, 2007 05:07 PM (GMT)
Maybe next year I'll do 17 badges. XD

kamon keronji - April 19, 2007 05:57 PM (GMT)
I was a resident newbie. I was first hoping that I wouldn't screw up at doing what I was told to do. But luckly that wasn't a issue. It was my first time on staff anywhere and I must say I will do it again. Even when they told me early saturday that I did my part and I was done I felt like my job was never done! I kept on asking for more jobs to do the entire rest of the weekend. I will definatly be on staff next year!!!!

And hopfully soon I will be able to attend the meetings also.
