For the future: Old school anime room.

Older anime titles along the lines of:
Yawara!!(because it's totally absurd)
L-Gaim
Chou Mashin Eiyuden Wataru!
Kouryo Dentsu Villgust
Panzer World Galient
Legend of prince Arislan
Rayearth
Gunbuster (for scenepoints)

etc & so forth. thoughts?

I vaguely recall suggesting this and then it getting shot down because "most people have probably seen it already".

That'd be awsum! Alot of the older stuff is sometimes hard to find in stores, so i havent seen alot of it.

Old stuff should be shown, its just a matter of what format. We are anime punch and we pride ourselves on showing stuff you don't normally see at cons... This includes the classics, and there will be old anime.

Formatting is up in the air, I'm not sure if a whole room is necessary, but making sure the schedule is diverse and unique is!

What about unsubtitled material? That's about the only thing I can contribute, but Toushou Daimos would be a Great Thing to show. Mike should have a few episodes from a disc I sent him.

And maybe the Jarinko Chie movie? Please?

Which one, Chie or Daimos? I have both, but I'd rather not redo effort if Neil has a script for Chie. I could make a master if I have the script, though.

I translated about 6 minutes of the first episode of Daimos, but stopped because I no longer have the time to dedicate myself to a 40+ episode series. I learned that on Angel Heart.

Chie the movie was subbed by us. Though I would like someone to check over the script in its current form. I would like to see the TV show though ;).

Daimos I don't remember hearing about.

Also, I personally like the idea of unsubtitled material, if only to get fansubbers interested in subbing stuff. We need some way to directly communicate with them, I'm not sure how but it would be great if we could try to rope them into seeing the sorts of shows that are overlooked and should be subtitled...

I know Otakon screens raws. The difference between Punch and Otakon is that Otakon is far more likely to reach out to the fansubbing community, those who are inspired to create fansubs, and finally those who actually speak Japanese to begin with (cough cough near New York City cough cough). On the other hand, even though Otakon played the 3 animerama films, films by Osamu Tezuka (creator of Astroboy) fansubbers still haven't tackled these releases. The only one to get subbed was by a Hong Kong (read bad translation) source for the Belladonna of Sadness.


Here is an interesting question: how do we get raws out in such a way that would actually allow them to be shown to the people who have the power to subtitle them? How do we break the reliance the fansubbing community has on new TV shows likely to be subbed, and return them to their roots of subbing for the sake of allowing new stuff to be licensed?

I would be even more willing to show raws if there was a guarantee that at least one fansubber picked up one of our raws as a project after the con.

I'd love to take a look, and I'm sure Bobby Bingham would as well.

Remember Gekiganger 3 from Nadesico? The "episode" where the hero meets a beautiful girl with amnesia and they fall in love, only to find out that she's the enemy?

That's Toushou Daimos: a mecha romance. And it's absolutely brilliant. It's also what probably got Nagahama Tadao the nod to direct "Rose of Versailles." Sadly - or sadly fortunately? - he died before RoV finished.

Anyway, it's a pretty damn good show. Completely one dimensional, but a lot of fun to watch.

As for the first question, there are plenty of public BT trackers out there; it's just a question of finding one that would play along. A quick mail to Saiei (http://saiei.nagi-fanboi.net/) might help; they only track "old school" raws. Sorry, can't use the LiT tracker: scarywater has a strict "no raws" policy.

For the second question: we can't. The war is over, and the digisubbers won. Fansubbing is now a mirror of the warez community, complete with 0-day subs. Software developers can't stop the warez scene; I don't see how we can fight the tide, either. It's entropy.

Daimos:
I'd have no problem with playing Daimos, it seems that it actually got a US release and was called Starbirds... sounds like a cool thing to show :).

Response to question 2:
We can't stop the tide, but we can at least convince some people that there is a different way - people sometimes get too caught up in the little cultures they create to realize that their are different ways of thinking about such things. Creating avenues to allow some people to broaden their horizons on fansubbing is what I'd like to do, not take down the current system.
