Title: Should I come to this con?
Description: I'm bored and what the hell right?
melink14 - March 12, 2007 03:22 AM (GMT)
So I was looking for a con that was on a specific weekend and yours clearly seems like it is the best one available on this weekend. So, on a whim I've decided to possibly come, but I'm not completely convinced yet, so I've given myself tonight to come to a final decision.
Normally, I wouldn't need much of an impetus to go to any type of anime related convention but Columbus is pretty far from Cambridge so I don't want to waste the time and resources that would be required if it turns out it's the wrong type of environment.
So, I know it 'kicks ass', but I'm asking for some input because I don't have a good standard by which to judge. I staffed AB once and while I think it was pretty awesome, I really don't think I can use it as a rubric.
In any case, from what I can tell this convention seems like it has a lot of cool things going for it.
As a student, I like the appreciation of academia at this con which shows it's at a level beyond many others.
It seems like the con's emphasis on spontaneity might lead to too little structure. While all the randomness is going on, the regular con isn't ever neglected is it?
Essentially, what it comes down to, is that I enjoy anime a lot but never became bat-shit insane, will this con still be cool?
So, if you can give me some details, or even maybe coverage of last year's con or whatever, that would be awesome.
If it turns out to be a win, then I will get a room/tickets/prereged immediately.
Kaisermikeb - March 12, 2007 03:58 AM (GMT)
Um, not sure what to say. The randomness shouldn't get in the way of the con, and in the end it's like any other convention, you pick and choose what you want to see. We've got some really incredible panelists though, and some pretty fun events as well. We also have a supremely awesome concert. Our video rooms also show a much wider array of things than most cons, so you should be able to expand on your fandom and viewing history. Of course, we're going to be a lot smaller than AB, which has its own advantages sometimes.
In short though, you make of it what you to. If you want to be coocoo for animu and run around the whole time, we're suited for that. If you want to hit a few key panels, watch some anime, and have a few drinks that night we're great at providing that too.
melink14 - March 12, 2007 04:14 AM (GMT)
Seems legitimate. I think I will go provided there's still space.
Also, I'm curious. The AMV showings are at 9am? That's early. Are they not very popular?
Thanks.

It is win. I went last year, and I can say that it is one of the funniest cons I have had the chance to go to. Everything mike said pretty much sums it all up. Come and enjoy.
LittleNicoleLost - March 12, 2007 04:17 AM (GMT)
The panels are indeed quite amazing for the most part and worth seeing if you have the time. Also the gaming rooms are good for the soul of any fan. Diversity seems to be the key to AP. Something that brought me back again this year.
Some of the other events like game shows, (Who Wants to be an Otaku Millionaire and Distraction -Last year were great) give it zest. Randomness can be the spice of life. Either you do it. Or you enjoy the show.
Edit: Of the cons I've been to the AMV's always seem to be early. I don't know why. I sure like them.
Kaisermikeb - March 12, 2007 08:19 AM (GMT)
AMV's are early mainly because we have a lot to fit into main that day, and we typically don't get too many AMV submissions. Also, it's a popular event that at least 10 or 15 people (the creators) usually attend, so it's a good way to get people out of bed early so they don't miss half the con!
Nicole: While distraction was definitely us, I think anime Millionair was either Ikasu or Sugoi, as we didn't have that. We had "Name that anime" last year.
This year for gameshows we have Distraction, Toki Doki Tokyo Tower (as seen at Cleveland Colossal con), and Anime Havok (new this year!). We may also have Anime name that tune.
SSJ Jup81 - March 12, 2007 03:57 PM (GMT)
Aww, no Anime Family Feud? :(

It was also at Ikasu or Sugoi. I went due to not recognising the name, and not seeing a description when I looked in the conbook. I didnt regret going.
melink14 - March 12, 2007 11:56 PM (GMT)
Right so, I've been convinced that this will be as good as any other con I could possibly go too. At least, I'm convinced that it was the right choice over the farmington ME con the same weekend.
I guess I'll see you cool cats in a few weeks.

Hah. I get confused a little, because AP was my first con last year. Otaku Millionaire was Colosal Con.

Are you cool? Do you like to have fun? Are you free? Will you let me glomp you if you cosplay?
If so, then come. Otherwise, stay home.

Why would being cool, matter? o.O

Oh man, I didn't know there were these entrance requirements.
Let's see if I check out.
"Am I cool?" Don't think I've ever had claim to that attribute, what with being a nerd and going to anime conventions. One down already.
"Do I like to have fun?" I suppose this was thrown in here as one of those checks on stupid people. A question no reasonably intelligent person would answer incorrectly. Like when Wal Mart asks people if they like to steal things from their employer. So I win this question, 1 for 2.
"Am I free?" This one was tricky. I think I'm free, I have a decent amount of autonomy. But I could also argue that the virtual panopticon that the government and society represent really mean I can never be free until I escape normative society and let loose the chains that bind me.
In closing, "Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty we are free at last"
I'm not quite sure how I'm doing at this point so I'll just move on.
"Will I let you glomp me if I cosplay?" As I'm not going to cosplay this is sort of moot. But the question was tricky in that it wants to know how I would act if I was wearing cosplay irregardless of the fact that I won't be cosplaying. (Damn you subjunctive) On principle when people ran at me in order to essentially tackle me I try not to let them do it. But luckily the question was specific to our good friend "Kairi029" and thus I wouldn't have to let everyone glomp just her, I seriously doubt that I would be on the look out for attacking young ladies, and thus would probably end up letting "Kairi029" glomp me.
I don't know who grades the test or not. But it seems like the curve is sorta steep. I guess if I fail I'll have to stay home and cancel all my shit. That'd be unfortunate. Darn me for not getting the practice test!!
Kaisermikeb - March 13, 2007 04:37 AM (GMT)
Oh just ignore her, I know we all do!
Kairi029 - March 14, 2007 04:23 AM (GMT)
Oh Mike, you'll like me once you meet me ^_^ I'll be the one making things fun
Kaisermikeb - March 14, 2007 06:57 AM (GMT)
Fun and annoying are more closely related than a lot of people give them credit for.

I agree. I'm that way sometimes, and I know it. :0
And yes, AP is the best around. 8]
kalajessta - March 14, 2007 01:19 PM (GMT)
Also, depending where you live, AP will most likely will be cheaper overall. I've estimated the cost of going to AB and it was too pricey for me. If you prefer small-medium cons, then this is a good con to go to. Otherwise, go to AB.

Mike knows these things.
I think it's refuring to the people that have so much fun they only pay attention to themselves, etc.
I have that with people a lot.

The whole world only pays attention to themselfs. If they didn't, there would be no poverty, war, or Cuba.

Maybe that's how you view it.
But some people take the time to try and think about others.
However; I don't really think it's polite to continue an argument here on he planning boards. Or continue it at all.
So could you all just play nice for a bit hm?
Kairi029 - March 15, 2007 02:11 AM (GMT)
You can't almost give. You can't just think about doing something for the needy. You have to do. AD council <3

Wow.
No, that's not true.
People do things because they're nice, and I know for a fact that Nicole knows what she's talking about. People give to the needing because of sympathy, because they wish to make a difference in someones life, and so you know, though I may not have been, 'papmered' or have 'standards' like you, I understand having that help when I was younger.
I don't know what my mother could have done if we didn't have a, 'little bit' of people that have given to us.
Anyway--sorry, that made me feel horrible because I do know there are people out there, and I'm thankful for them.

to side track the the conversation away from the fine points of annoyance and fun,
I go to School in Cambridge which is next to where AB takes place. Ironically enough, the price of the hotel almost compensates for it.
although, technically, I could not stay in a hotel and go on the cheap.
But this one isn't too expensive, has an unbeatable date cooresponding with spring break, and AB conflicts with somehow more important things.
Bukkake Tsunami - March 20, 2007 03:39 AM (GMT)
I really don't know what to expect from this convention either. The Hentai Olympics panel really drew me, though. And the cheap as hell prereg sealed the deal. I'll only be paying $25 for registration and $29 for the hotel. This is going to be the cheapest con I've ever been too! :)
I was kind of confused about the AMVs being at 9am, too.. but it's not really that big a deal.
