Title: Your top ten

Yuffie - March 8, 2007 10:33 PM (GMT)
If you were to choose your ten top favorite games, what would you put? It's was chattered about among my friends, and now I'm kinda interested what your guys would be.

Remember, favorite doesn't always equal good!

Mine, in no particular order,

1.Kirby in Dreamland 2(gbp)
First game I ever owned and still one I enjoy. Rick is such a fun character, with the way he abuses Kirby, among all his other awesomenesses. Playing the later games, I miss all of Kirby friends. Does anyone else remember playing this? Whenever I mention it, all I get is 'I have the one Rick trophey on Super Smash Bros Melee'

2.Pokemon Emerald(gba)
The pokemon game that sucked in some ways, and made amazing improvements in other ways. There is just a charm to the secret bases. Also, Battle Frontier, where you can go to go your ass handed to you anytime!

3.Pokemon Leafgreen(gba)
Remake of Pokemon Blue, it was the game that sucked in ways Emerald didn't, and was cool in ways Emerald sucked.

4.Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney(ds)
This game is so much fun, and I like the alternate future idea in here. Have the parrot take the stand! Just, remember alternate part. ^_^ If only the legal system was that much fun, a lot more people would be lawyers.

5.Super Smash Bros Melee (gc)
It fun to play this with other people. I seem pretty talented at sucking at this game though. Probably something with insisting on playing as Jigglypuff...

6.Final Fantasy VII(ps1)
Hence, Yuffie. ^_^ Probably my favorite game. As much fame as it has, I still say this is a seriously underrated game.

7.Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Justice For All(ds)
Same pseduolaw goodness back for round 2.

8.Final Fantasy Tactics(ps1)
Choco ball!

9.Kirby Squeak Squad(ds)
It's been said it's nothing special, but I enjoy playing this one so much. I have no idea why I do.

10.Oregon Trail (pc)
It's strangely satisfying especially after a long day of school...I don't know exactly why...ooo, my ela teacher just got bit by a rattlesnake.

LittleNicoleLost - March 8, 2007 11:03 PM (GMT)
Top Ten games? Hmm..

1. Morrowind Elder Scrolls 3 (Xbox)
RPG of the GODS, at least as far as my personal opinion is concerned. I can't wait to get Oblivion.

2. Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
The first game I ever beat entirely and actually wanted to play again. Plus I adore Vincent. XD

3. Pokemon Silver (GB)
Yay, for the addiction to Pokemon at a young age.

4. Cooking Mama (DS)
Michelle and her ways, got me addicted to this simple yet fun game.

5. Harvest Moon: Magical Melody (GC)
All the amazing-ness of farming in one game. Play whichever sex and do even more in this third adaption of the Harvest moon GameCube series. Joy to the raising of little animals.

6. Diablo II (PC)
My first online multiplayer game. Simple easy gameplay, and some interesting people to play with. The internet is full of odd kids :D

7. 007 GoldenEye (N64)
Guilty pleasure in chasing my brother around levels and shooting the crap out of him.

8. Pokemon Stadium (N64)
Mini games. That' all I played it for. Teehee. I love mini games.

9. Mario Party (GC)
Mini games. Sooooooo many mini games for me to play. ^^

10. Legend of Dragoon (PS1)
Wow. Just. Good.

Lilith's Dark Shadow - March 8, 2007 11:14 PM (GMT)
I'm suprised no one said anything that would make me want to vomit yet...

1. Unreal Editor

2. Deus Ex

3. Final Fantasy Tactics

4. System Shock 2

5. Command and Conquer Tiberian Dawn

6. Unreal Tournament (Xidia Gold specifically)

7. Enemy Territory

8. Tales of Symphonia

9. Fallout

10. Yoshi's Island

11 (since '1' isn't actually a game). Super Metroid

My friend adores this game, she keeps trying to have me play it. She says she's also tried the recipes, and they work.

I've tried the 'Wonderful Life' and haven't gotten into it. I can't figure out what I'm suppose to do at the start.

8. Pokemon Stadium (N64)
Mini games. That' all I played it for. Teehee. I love mini games.

I loved those mini games, they were so much fun.

10. Legend of Dragoon (PS1)

Have it, never played it. I guess I should someday?

Aw, Lilith, I'm sure your chance would come.

smokie - March 9, 2007 01:10 AM (GMT)
1. The Elder Scrolls Three: Morrowind Game of the Year Edition. Vanilla was pimp too but the expansions just add so much cool shit.

2. Twisted Metal 2

3. Harvest Moon Back to Nature probably shouldn't be this high up on the list but Save the Homeland just sucked so much ass. It was a very repetitive game though.

4. A tie between Oblivion and KOTOR. Please don't make me pick.

5. GTA Vice City I listened to the rock radio station so much I developed a love of Motley Crue. Lilith may want to vomit.

6. MediEvil an awesome Playstation game. One of the biggest regrets in my life is that I never beat it. I just could never solve this one puzzle to my eternal frustration.

7. Star Wars Republic Commando one of the best Star Wars games and a pretty good FPS to boot. Very gritty but not too much.

8. Pokemon Silver it was this or Red but I figure since this had all the gyms from Red in it and more shit to fight when you are high level I would pick it. Remember the first time you fought Ash? He kicked you ass didn't he? Don't be ashamed it happens to everybody.

9. Halo. Lilith will now definately vomit.

10. Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Probably played more of this than any other game. Even so its up here more out of nostalgia than anything.

I lost my dinner at KOTOR

you owe me an awesome burger

smokie - March 9, 2007 03:24 AM (GMT)
WHAT!? Whats wrong with KOTOR? Its not a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination but it was a good solid game. Its fun, has a decent story and a fair amount of replay value.

Nicole if you haven't played Oblivion yet just let me say its an okay game but its not as good as Morrowind. Does that mean its bad no. It has many good things Morrowind did not. I think it just disappointed me so much because I waited for it forever and Bethesda promised so much and didn't deliver on all of it. I still have yet to play it with Knights of the Nine and I'm looking forward to Shivering Isles. So until I play it with those I can't pass final judgement on it. Shivering Isles worries me though.

Kairi029 - March 9, 2007 04:00 AM (GMT)
1.) Kingdom Hearts series

...that's all. I'm not gonna lie. It's the only game that didn't have me getting frustrated and throwing the controller at the TV. Yeah, yeah, judge all you want, i don't care. KH is the shitt. (yes, with two t's)

Yuffie - March 9, 2007 11:23 AM (GMT)
But 1 thing isn't equal to 10!

Hm...sounds like you could use a few suggestions on games to try, unless you really don't care. I'd say,
Pokemon *no surprise*
Phoenix Wright
for a start.

You need to expand your tastes and try new things though!

smokie - March 9, 2007 08:20 PM (GMT)
While I feel Lilith was being overly harsh in his assesment of Kingdom Hearts I agree with Yuffie. You need to try more things. I mean I have the weirdest taste in games ever I like Harvest Moon and first person shooters. That proves that you can like more than one thing. Although I wish Harvest Moon games did have a shotgun so I could waste all those useless rabbits and squirels and use them for cooking.

smokie, i was going to let Wyatt take care of... picking apart KOTOR but it seems he kinda vanished on me there. So I'm just going to leave it at "3.5 edition and starwars."

rdhdtwns - March 10, 2007 12:08 AM (GMT)
Don't laugh, too hard. They hold more sentimental value than what was popular or megaawesome.

1) Ducktales (NES)
2) Fatal Frame II (PS2)
3) Tekken 3 (PS)
4) Harvest Moon : Back to Nature (PS)
5) King of Fighters 99 (PS version.. heh)
6) Meltyblood re:act (PC)
7) Skate or Die (NES)
8) Mario's Time Machine (SNES)
9) Any Mario Kart (I couldn't choose, heh)
10) Guitar Hero (I and II.. >.>)

Ducktales was the first game I beat, so it still holds a place in my heart. ^_^

Yuffie - March 10, 2007 01:30 AM (GMT)
Heh, favorite really doesn't equal good at all. Not saying it's bad, just asking people, the games pegged as favorites have not really been the popular games. There usually have been a few, but not as many as you'd think.

Now, now, don't get mad, his job is to be an asshole. And believe me, you don't want to do that to him. I'm the only one who gets to fight with Lilith!

He was rude, but he has a valid point.

This makes me think I want a tv show, what not to play, where you take video games players in desperate need of better games, throw out the ones such a FFX in their collections and set them up with a gift card, but they're only allowed to choose from a certain list of games to buy.

I've been watching too much tv this weekend.

smokie - March 12, 2007 12:39 AM (GMT)

D20 based and Star Wars. That ought to be enough.

And as far as what I can come up with right now...well the order is probably all messed up, but...

1.Xenogears
1.Chrono Trigger
3.Mega Man X
4.Legend of Mana
5.Perfect Cherry Blossom
6.Gitaroo Man
7.Zone of the Enders: 2nd Runner
8.Unreal Tournament
9.Wanda and the Colossus (currently moving- trend upward)
0.Super Mario 64

Kairi029 - March 13, 2007 03:13 AM (GMT)
Damn KH haters, can't get with the program...dammit.

melink14 - March 13, 2007 03:18 AM (GMT)
I felt I should post a truly correct list. The fact that earthbound isn't on more lists makes me weep for the future of gaming. Also, chrono trigger should be on more than one list. I spent a pretty penny to play the SNES version but I think there's a psx port, also roms.

1. Earthbound
2. Chrono Trigger
3. A link to the past
4. SMRPG
5. Link's Awakening
6. Ocarina of Time
7. DDR
8. Neverwinter Nights (1,2)
9. Baldur's Gate
10. Super Hunchback

Wyatt - March 13, 2007 08:53 AM (GMT)
Earthbound, while fantastic from a story standpoint, falters at its gameplay which gan get rather repetetive. I tire of running into New Age Retro Hippies at every turn, you know. It probably started really dragging at Threed. And, to be honest, I got kind of sick of random shite happening ALL the time. It's bad enough that I'm fighting rejects from Kamen Rider at the arcade and a steam-powered RC killing machine, but UFOs, Fobbys, animated electric guitars and statues in an alternate-reality of the city I just got to? It lacked a certain balance of pace. There were times things moved far too fast and times it wasn't fast enough. Finally, I likr more than just RPGs, so it's obvious that all the good ones aren't going to be there.

PS: Link's Awakening is the best Zelda game.

And Kairi, for the love of damn everything, just quit your bitching over people not liking the only game you seem to have the temerity to play! Or better yet, take Yuffie's advice and discover some of the better things out there! Try the games where the characters you deal with came from. Final Fantasy VII and VIII would be grat places to start. Anything but a game in which shopkeeps deal in "munny." :/ I would suggest avoiding MMO games though- those actually have less depth than even KH can muster (sadly).

would expect any less of me?

I never actually played KOTOR long enough to see a story. The mere fact that it was star wars was already pushing the boundry, but to add on the fact that its d20 made me projectile vomit my last three days worth of meals. And given that its star wars, what ever the story was can easily be transfered to a less retarded setting, so as far as I'm concerned the story is totally irrelevent to it.

You can like it all you want but from the sheer mechanics of it, its a bad game, just like something else i like to rant about. The same can literaly be said of all d20 games. The system is a pile of garbage and doesn't belong in video games, let alone any roleplaying group worth its weight in dice.

at least KOTOR is an entire order of magnitude above KH... though i can't say thats saying much at all...

Those are fair points. I can't argue against them, I think at the time Earthbound was made though, most RPGs operated in similar ways. I think earthbound with it's auto winning and enemies running away from you after you got strong enough, was probably one of the more proactive games in preventing you from getting overly bored with fighting the same random ass monsters.

And I suppose I do have a slight propensity towards RPGs, which might not be reflected on a more reasonable person's list.

Finally, Link's Awakening was a very bad ass game. And I think it's overlooked far too often when people discuss Zelda. In general though, I think I give the advantage to ALTTP just for it's sheer length of game play, I'd agree that it doesn't do a lot of things as well as Link's Awakening but it does them pretty good, and it does them for a long ass time.

Although, snorting magic powder with a raccoon in the forest is hard to beat.

My guess is that the attack of D20 comes not from some inherent hatred of the D20 but from some other system that to is clearly better. I'm interested in knowing what that system is? Tri?

Mashidar - March 13, 2007 06:42 PM (GMT)
I'll list 10 but I don't really have an order to my madness.

-Chrono Trigger: I remember getting this game for my b-day and the cart costing as much as a next-gen game from Media Play. Loved the story, and enjoyed the combat.

-FF3 (US Release): Another great RPG that had a good story and interesting people. The first time I had to do Sabin's Street Fighter 2 style moves to use his abilities I thought I found greatness.

-Street Fighter Series: I enjoy most 2d fighters, but Street Fighter in general is a game series that I played alot in the local Putt Putt when they were around here.

-Final Fantasy Tactics: I loved the story in this game as well. Enjoyed how things played out and loved being able to level different jobs. I look forward to the PSP Remake to take with me to work.

-Suikoden Series: I really enjoy this series. I didn't really enjoy the 4th game that much but every other game I liked. The 2nd one was the best IMO, and frankly there's not many RPG's that beat Suikoden's tale. The series returned to form in the latest Suikoden game, Suikoden 5.

-Dynasty Warriors/Samurai Warriors/? Warriors series: While the game is nothing but button mashing, this was one of the first titles that REALLY gave me the love of killing hundreds of people on a battlefield.

-Phantasy Star 4: Another great RPG, also has a anime-like tone with the cutscenes.

-Zone of Enders Series: Loved the music, loved the combat, loved the story. I look forward to a ZoE 3.

-Ace Combat Series: Loved the 4th and 5th game, I look forward to a PS3 version of the series.

Now you're going overboard. That's just not nice.

Many people will say it is a good game, and I like Winnie-the-pooh land. If it was on your list, so what. However, you said that it's the only game worth playing and that's not true. It has serious flaws.

Some of the reasons why Kingdom Hearts sucks
1.) Kairi is a mary sue.
2.) No matter how you cut it, Sora is a dweeb!
3.) Face it, the setting of Kingdom Hearts with all the crossover worlds makes no sense.
4.) The 2nd game was too easy.

I'd go into it more, but I'll let someone better and who can less of a bitch about it, like Mike, explain why it's not that great!

Lothlin - March 13, 2007 10:43 PM (GMT)
-Mechwarrior series (Don't make me choose, I haven't played one I haven't liked)
-Vampire: Bloodlines (It has MANY faults, but it's amusing in a pinch and that's not bad)
-Black and White (both of them)
-Dark Forces 2/Jedi Knight (Same game, two names. Jedi academy just... wasn't as good.)
-Baldur's Gate 2 (and I'll throw the Icewind Dale series in with it because they are similer.)
-Fatal Frame series (though I've only watched some of 2 and played three, it's really a great game and I can't wait to play more, once my roomate gets her copy of 2 back)
-LoZ: Ocarina of Time
-Disgaea
-Prince of Persia (Two Thrones and Sands of Time... Warrior Within SUCKED, IMHO)
-Chrono Cross

I don't have 10 favorite games, but my top favorite right now is Tales of the Abyss.

Lothlin - March 14, 2007 05:21 AM (GMT)
1.)A Mary Sue is a female character that is Loved By All. She is generally prettyful and charming and fought over, occasionally angsty, lacks much in a way of personality, and often exists for being an attention whore. They're always exceptional or unique in some manner. Tragic backgrounds are common. Tragic storylines where everyone fights for their attention or love or [insert cliche here] are also common.

These things are usually taken to an extreme. Oh yeah, and short skirts. Lots of short skirts

Kairi is a Mary Sue. Not one of the worst ones, but she's pretty bad.

2.) You saying you like the crossover in regards to them making no sense is like... bringing up the price of beans in China. It doesn't have relevance! Many liked things make no sense. Fuck, I like the crossovers sometimes (when I'm not staring at my TV going why the hell is Goofy a FREAKING TURTLE,) but that doesn't change the fact that I found myself scratching my head in wonderment at the complete lack of sense that was made. Especially when it came to Atlantica.

3.)...your point being? More people arguing a stupid point isn't going to make the point any less stupid.

You need to go back to debate school ^_^

Those are nice features I've always wanted to see back. Alternatively, Chrono Trigger's system where the enemies have their hiding places and aren't every second or three (FFV was fscking right out). I'm not discounting your choice as invalid- just making words for the sake of it.

I dunno, I spent a lot more time on Link's Awakening, really. It's an overall more difficult game (like that place in Eagle Tower where you can legitimately become stuck and not progress :( Lost a game that way once...) and it has a lot more interesting mechanics and characters (Roc's Feather, Bow-Wow, the boomerang is actually useful, Marin and the crane game). I really do feel that part of what made Zelda 3 great for a lot of people is that it was well scored. People don't notice it often enough that music is part of the game too, I think.

As for D20, I can't speak for LDS, but it really is a bad system. Granted, it's a huge step above second ed. and AD&D, but the mechanics are such that it's only kind of decently balanced up to level ten or so. The system doesn't really allow for the creation of anything aside from generic characters, either, which is a major turn-off. In fact, they encourage this and even go so far as to emphasize that your character is merely a normal human being. I don't play games to be normal. Stats are poorly defined (also, too few of them) and even on the GM side, there are problems. Like CR and EL and how they relate (and how they really don't if you look at what you can actually do by using those numbers), the arbitrary DCs assigned to simple tasks, the price of enchantment, the creation process for new spells, the inability for a spellcaster to actually make anything legitimately useful for less than it costs to buy it at any point where it would be useful (magic has always been broken in D&D). Anyway, enough ranting from me.

Lilith's Dark Shadow - March 14, 2007 01:58 PM (GMT)

I <3 WoD, even if most of my friends insist on stubbornly sticking to D&D systems, so we don't have that many White Wolf games running.

I would die of happiness if an Exalted video game got released; it would transfer over so well, and what's better than being able to cut through swathes of enemies with a giant golden sword trailing sparks of energy. Mmmm, that would just be great. Shiny violence.
