Title: Japanese Food
kalajessta - January 22, 2007 11:22 PM (GMT)
I've been exloring Asian markets around the Columbus area, and thus far food I've found I really enjoy that I haven't really tried befpre:
melon bread
steam buns
mochi ice cream
caplico drink
I do say by far, steam buns are my new favoirte.

A snacky food by the name of Everyburger. Little tiny cookie/chocolate hamburgers, complete with sesame seeds on the 'bun'. It's best if you hold them like a full-size hamburger, and mug stupidly while eating. XD

Everyburger? Never heard such of a thing. Is it asian?

I make a mean homemade steamed bun. Try a red bean bun, it is very sweet and will just make it seem like there is a party in your mouth. Kala, what markets have you gone too?
Lothlin - January 25, 2007 03:25 AM (GMT)
Personally, I love sushi (mmmmmmmm tuna maki), and miso soup, and well, the atmosphere of japanese resteraunts in general. It's a lot less... hectic than some places.
But I don't know of those types of food are what you're neccessarily asking about, are they?
crknight29 - January 25, 2007 03:58 AM (GMT)
Lothlin, i live about 5 min. from a great japanese restraunt with a sushi bar.

I've tried a red bean doughnut. That was a little strange.
I've been to the one called Columbus Asian Market and the Kenny Center one (I always forget the name). I still need to check out the New Asian Supermarket yet.
Kaisermikeb - January 25, 2007 04:46 AM (GMT)
Oh... the Kenny one used to be called "Seafood Japan". I don't know its new name either.
rpb3000 - January 25, 2007 05:19 AM (GMT)
I think it's "Tensuke Market". And the gift store that was "New Japan" is now "Hana Gifts".

See, and I'm so crazy jealous of you, because down here in the ass end of Ohio, the closest thing we have to sushi is a few really shitty california rolls at the mongolian buffet. I can MAKE better sushi than they sell!
Well, I could, if the Kroger had fish I can trust. But they really don't, none of it looks or smells particularily good, so I'm stuck with Krab.

Making sushi is hard actually. I attempted it last week. My rolls didn't come out too pretty unfortunally.
Lothlin - January 25, 2007 06:13 AM (GMT)
It's takes practice, especially when it comes to figuring out how much you have to stuff it with; Generally, if it's a bigger roll, like california rolls, it's almost easier to put the rice on the outside and the fillings inside, because then you actually have room for the fillings.
I'm getting pretty good at it though, I do it enough. Shit, I made a sushi platter for christmas, for some reason my crazy family decided we'd have a fish-themed holiday.
Check out my leet sushi skills. Well. Actually, the rolls were kind of messy that day, come to think of it.
kalajessta - January 25, 2007 06:15 AM (GMT)
Aah, yeah I guess you have a point. I want to buy a few sushi books to see what advice they give. I'm just scared with using fish. My family barely ate fish and when we did as it is, we always got it from resturaunts. So I don't know anything about it except that I only really like salmon and tuna (not tuna fish that you buy in cans but actual).
Lothlin - January 25, 2007 06:20 AM (GMT)
Krab (with a K!) is always safe, since it's cooked. You can always use cooked fish, though I've found that it really doesn't taste that good.
As far as raw goes, make sure it's a decent seller; some fish is stamped 'sushi grade', I do believe that kind is flash frozen and should be good unless there was shipping stuff. If it's fresh and the guy behind the counter actually knows what's what(which, at this time of year in columbus, isn't going to happen,) in the words of Alton Brown (oh, how I love good eats,) ask them what they would use for sushi. They'll probably be able to suggest something fresh.
Also? Fresh fish shouldn't really smell strongly fishy. If it does, it means it's probably past the point of being eatable (at least raw.)
World Market has some decent sushi books, though, my mom got me mine on sale at Waldenbooks, of all things. Good rice recipe, a bunch of stuff that isn't raw (sushi salads, tamago-yaki, assorted veggie rolls) well, along with raw stuff. ^^
Someday I will attempt a rainbow roll. And it will promptly fall apart.
crknight29 - January 25, 2007 06:26 AM (GMT)
i tried an eel roll the other day and it was good. they marinated it in teriyaki sauce.

Where is World Market?
My favorite sushi is:
philadelphia rolls
chicken tempra rolls
tuna rolls (any kind)
I don't really like:
eel rolls
california rolls (too plain for me)
"Columbus" rolls
I've tried alot of different rolls. I tend to buy two rolls where ever they sell them and try one new roll and buy one that I know I would like. It's a good way to try and experiment to see what you like.
Lothlin - January 25, 2007 06:37 AM (GMT)
Well, the only one I can think of is on Polaris pkwy (at least in Columbus,) but you could probably head to their website and check it out, I'm sure they have a store locator.
Hrm. I love tuna rolls (not so much salmon,) like california, love orange rolls. Sashimi platters are always tasty, and hell, I'll generally eat any nigiri that gets thrown in front of me. Mmm octopus!
crknight29 - January 25, 2007 06:41 AM (GMT)
well, there are 4 here in columbus...Easton, Dublin, Lennox Town Center, and Polaris...and there are 3 in cincinnati (kenwood, west chester, and tri-county).
I work for one here in Columbus and we have a huge selection of Asian and Europen food. Mostly snacks and candy though.
Giant Eagle has a great selection of sushi and if you are ever down in the fairfield/cincinnati area then stop by Jungle Jims off of route 4.

Easton or Dublin would be the the ones nearest to me.
Giant Eagle does?! They never did in the ones up in Cleveland. That makes me kind of depressed to hear that. I'll have to check them out for sushi down here.

unagi? Never heard of it. I've bought my self some onigiri molds. I've attempted to make real ones this week, but it's rather difficult without good instructions (or ones you can read). I'm hoping the molds will help.

Unagi = Barbequed Eel = Damn Tasty
Where does one acquire eel around here?
crknight29 - January 25, 2007 07:10 AM (GMT)
i would gather at a fish market, but not sure...try giant eagle.

I'll have to check them out next week when I get paid. Only bad thing about sushi: it gets pricey after a while.
crknight29 - January 25, 2007 07:22 AM (GMT)
they are pretty reasonable at giant eagle, just depends on what you get.

I will say, I haven't gotten around to get a chance to seriously expand my effects on Japanese food. I will basically eat anything, well, sorry guys, I'm not too much of a sushi fan, but if I'm hungy, I'll definently eat it.
And I've probably tried a lot, and I just can't remember the names of the foods.
God, John, I haven't eaten yet and talking about that plaza, I remember those cresant rolls with chocolate. :< Those we're the best Ch.Cre. I've ever ate..... ^^ I like that place.
rpb3000 - January 25, 2007 03:23 PM (GMT)
I remember there was a place called the "Columbus Fish Market" near where AP was last year. Has anyone checked that place out?
Lilith's Dark Shadow - January 25, 2007 04:56 PM (GMT)
Its awesome, if a little expensive. Also, everything is flown in fresh every morning and the menu is rather dynamic given that it depends entirely upon what they have available.

Man I wish I was lucky as you and Biggs! I would love to have a Steamed bun but alas that is the drawback of living in lancaster, no big chinese resturants. is there going to be a chinese resturant near the convention this year that would have some?

Okonomiyaki. I miss that so much. It's a kind of fried batter...thing. Okonomi means what you want, and yaki means fried, so it literally means "cool what you want." It's generally made with vegitables and noodles and such, but it varies a lot. It's really good!
Also, real ramen.
Oh! And bar-b-q eel on rice is amazing.
Lilith's Dark Shadow - January 31, 2007 08:10 PM (GMT)
unadon is not bbq eel on rice.
If you want more reason to belive me than just that, I AM FROM MEMPHIS F'N TENNESSEE (read bbq capital of the known universe). Despite the fact that i hate the damn place i have picked up on what constitues bbq and what doesn't.

I have a quick and easy recipe for eggdrop soup if anyone is interested...just drop me a line on here. and furthermore...the Dublin Anime Club (just the two of us haha!) may be having a small get together to discuss anime and well to shoot the breeze with whoever wants to come eat in the future at one of the best chinese buffets here in Dublin, E-Chens. also let me know who might be interested in coming. and we will discuss later when we may have ths get together.
