yuesokka - January 22, 2007 08:20 AM (GMT)

Kaisermikeb - January 22, 2007 10:44 AM (GMT)
It's almost as grave a sin as dressing as your Gaia avatar.

Miccy - January 22, 2007 11:16 AM (GMT)
Haha!

If it's elaberate I'm sure It'll be great. :]

well i'm not talking rpg charaters like dnd. i'm talking more text based online. or like a chat room. like a made up charater for an already there show.

like a new avatar charater
a new kindom hearts charater
a new naruto charater
a new cowboy beebop charater

u know something along those lines

sniper - January 22, 2007 05:12 PM (GMT)
Well, I'm going as a basic shinigami, not anyone specific from Bleach. I also belong to a Bleach RP site. I guess I'll go as my Bleach RP character. cool.gif

islington - January 22, 2007 05:48 PM (GMT)
I went as a fairly obscure Avatar character, and everybody thought I was an OC. But...no, I never have.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, as long as there's obvious thought and effort put into it.

Kaisermikeb - January 22, 2007 06:50 PM (GMT)
Going as your own character is like cosplay masterbation. It's really egotistical and kind of detracts from the solidarity found in shared knowledge that cosplay contributes to the convention atmosphere.
Cons are cool because we're comming together as a collective, as brothers and sisters in arms (sometimes literally), for the one time a year when everyone around us actually knows what we're talking about, when we don't have to hide anything or be ashamed for being a bunch of comic book fans!
Using that forum as a stage for your own self gratification and promotion is just wrong. It would be like being one of those guys who primarily goes to cons to get his name out there, or the girl who is constantly whoring her art or crafts, exploiting the con scene as a cheap place to set up shop (no offense, Kala).
A generic character is one thing, but to go around as your own character is something entirely different. Take that to a mainstream fandom like sci-fi, they like that sort of thing there!

This is not Biggs - January 22, 2007 07:52 PM (GMT)
Look up Duelin Dan... he's cosplayed his own fan fiction character. I think he's supposed to be some nephew of that bulky guy from Fullmetal Alchemist. And he pretty much falls under the description that Mike has just provided.
Yeah... Now everyone forget that I brought that to your attention, please.

Lothlin - January 22, 2007 07:59 PM (GMT)
x.x I've had the misfortune of talking to him. 'Course, I kind of iniated it, I couldn't figure out why the hell Armstrong had hair. And dammnit, I paid.

Mike, you're the best.

Anyway, it is much more fun to go around as a character people will reconize then as a oc that most people probably don't care about. People enjoy seeing those outfits more.

And it somehow seems against the point to cosplay as your own character from a show, instead of one of the actual characters.

Doing oc is also looked down on a bit, since you have to enough in love with your character to actually want to cosplay them! Which is kinda scary!

Unfortunally he likes to stalk girls at cons too, online and offline. A few of my friends were stalked by him or is still be stalked by him in the past.

Lothlin - January 22, 2007 09:59 PM (GMT)
Personally... Eh, OCs are alright I suppose, though I will admit, it seems like it would be much more fun (if you're going from an established series, mind,) to dress up as an established character. People would recognize you and such, and you would be able to avoid akward questions about who exactl you are.

More sci-fi and roleplay oriented conventions, for the most part, probably are more suited for roleplaying characters, just because that's what the subject matter veers more towards that.

That said, there are fasion styles (Lolita, Visual Kei, et cetera,) that pop up at conventions, and even if they're not cosplay persay, and more of a showcase of a person's style and, possibly, skill with sewing, they are japanese-culture related and thus, probably more appropriate for an anime con. (One of my friends did have a gorgeous kimono that she made and was wearing around; she had a long bit of fluff thrown over her shoulder and fox ears, so we ended up calling her Sesshie's mom ;p. It wasn't cosplay, but it did jokingly turn into that.)

*shrugs* I guess I really don't care much. If I don't recognize the character and it's not especially impressive craftsmanship, I probably won't even notice anyway XD And if it IS exceptional craftsmanship (or just truly, truly bizzare,) I may ask. It all depends.

Heh, the forums part of gaia bugs the hell out of me. I mostly use it to talk to a couple friends on there, and there's a game I like that helps my scrabble skills.

I'd say Gaia is a mixed bag, although it does seem like it sucks at a quick glance.

I agree with the forums sucking on Gaia. I only use it to stay in contact with friends that don't use messangers, etc.

Dude. I dispise D &D. I was talking about roleplaying online too back in 7th grade. O_o;;

I blaim yahoo. When they had those personal chatrooms. People on there were, well, interesting.

But I do enjoy, when I'm drawing that is, creating a little character behind each. x3 I wouldn't ever cosplay/roleplay with them though.

No, I think you misinterpreted. I'm 15.

Yeah, you should. But liking a character and choosing to cosplay as them is two different things!

I'm planning on going as a basic shinigami from Bleach. I feel that this would be boring, so I'm going to be my Rp character. I'm not going to promote myself or my RP site. I'm simply going to have it ready in case anyone wants my character to have some personality. If you all hate RPs this much, I'll have no character and just dress up. If you hate this too, I'll go as Gin Ichimaru, the 3rd division captain because he has a similar hair style. I'd rather go as an unnamed shinigami though, because I'm too lazy to dye my hair silver.

Lothlin - January 23, 2007 04:33 PM (GMT)
You have blond hair right? (I still think you should go as Shinji <.<)

Gel your hair up a bit and go as Uruhara! Sandle-hat is always fun ;p.

or, be ambitious and do Mayuri. He's got the mask, so, you wouldn't have to worry about hairstyle ^^

The thing with Bleach, there's almost too many different characters to even have to bother with OCs because you don't want to get a wig. I bet you could find someone ^^

The same thing can be easily said with Naruto.

just going as an unamed shinigami is fine, as long as you aren't going to carry around some funny looking sword and claim its your shikai or something like that because that just isn't congruous with anything. Though i suppose if you want a different weapon than a sword, just say you're from the 11th division and i'm sure that'd be fine.

I'm sorry you took it that way, I don't have a reason to mock you.

Although I'm a little puzzled how you connected it to yourself, that's my own avatar on gaia(who affectionately hugs a dead fish...), and I kinda see dressing up the avatars on gaia a lot like playing with paper dolls.

That's not what I meant. Liking a character is one thing, but just because you do doesn't mean you'll cosplay as them. Cosplaying as your own character is kinda self-absorbed too, when you think about it.

and i don't think it's self absorbed. we plan on having fun with our charaters and playing our rpg only with out the net. it's like larp or something along those lines only with an anime show instead [Avatar is not anime -Ed]. well that's we're planning on anyway. plus with their being other s their playing the actuall avatar charaters we might even be able to have more fun! if they come and play with us anyway. <!--lethargic&:)-->user posted image<!--endemo-->

I agree that going as your own character is pretty bad. I'd only do it if someone really wanted my guy to have a backstory. It's pretty dumb to cosplay as someone that no one will know.

i like to usually cosplay charaters from obsucre manga or anime. but i think this will be more fun casue it's from a series everyone will know and u will so beabble to tell from our outfits it is avatar. and then people can ask and then they so join in on our little jokes and stuff when we do silly things.

it's about having fun. we're gonna have fun playing charaters we know inside and out cause we made'em. and that's what it's all about. plus we so want to do our silly jokes about kitty ears and stuff and it will be so much easier and funner to act it out smile.gif
