Title: RPGs for the con
The History Follower - January 17, 2007 04:57 AM (GMT)
I'm looking at running more games at this year's con. I want to do at least two rpgs; I just need help picking what games to play. I the games will all be rules lite, meaning the rules for the game can be explained in under 20 minutes so no D20 or GURPs.
Here's what I'm thinking:
High School Havoc. A game set in a high school drawing characters from several high school animes. I have a few systems designed just for this kind of game. Each player will be given an objective for their charcter to do (like pass a test, get a date, figure out which fellow student is really a monster out to kill everyone, kill everyone, etc.)
A hentai game using the Big Breasts Small Waist system. For the 18+ crowd. Some kind of game with lots of sex.
A ninja game. Maybe Basklis, maybe Naruto, maybe some thing generic.
Shinigami. It's system based on Yami no Matsuei (Decedants of Darkness), but could be altered for more Bleach type feel.
Samurai game. I'm thinking of Seven Samurai type game. Different ronins joining forces to fight badits.
Well what does everyone want?

There's always TFOS. Teenagers from Outer Space, it's really a fun system and easy to pick up quick (and it's based off of Urusei Yatsura, which makes it THAT MUCH COOLER,)
But... personally, I tend to like more serious games (Thus why I love everything to do with World of Darkness and own too many White Wolf books for my on good though,) and it looks like you want to do more lighthearted stuff so... Eh. I'll leave my suggestions out, and if you come up with something that I do find interesting, maybe I'll join in ^^
The History Follower - January 17, 2007 05:09 AM (GMT)
I've got plenty of easy systems, don't worry about.
As for a serious game, I'm all for that. I've got a huge amount of WOD books myself. I like new system, perticularly just the core book for mortals. I could play a horror game no prob. What are your suggestions?
Lothlin - January 17, 2007 05:21 AM (GMT)
Alright then <3
Well, I've had a major jonesing for a vampire game (really, any setting,) for a while, and I haven't found anyone besides me willing to run it. Hell, barely able to play it, they'd much rather fart around with D&D -.-. Maybe a Dark Ages quick-shot, I dunno, with plenty of medival dungeons and insane catholic priests-turned-malkavian *cackles* I could supply the book if you don't have it.
...Really though, it's more the longing for a fun Vamp game, i really don't have any specific suggestions ATM. Maybe I should think on it.

eh, d20 and gurps can be explained in under 10 minutes provided the people you are playing with dont have the downs...
and most people can't handle a game light on rules since they tend to get all pissy when the GM just doesn't let them do something retarded.

Are you saying D20 and GURPS can be explained in under 10 minutes if you already know the rules?
I want to run a system that I can explain to peole who have no experience playing RPGs. D20 and GURPS has a lot of rules that need to be covered to explain it right.
And a rules lite system doesn't mean that aren't rules for everything, it just means that a lot of stuff is all rolled together and you don't have to worry about a lot of number crunching.
Lothlin - January 24, 2007 07:17 PM (GMT)
D20 still occasionally confuses me sometimes, and it's not like I'm new to the wonder that is roleplay. At least with white wolf games you can pretty much sum everything up with an 'add this stat to that stat, roll that many dice, count successes above 6 (or whatever number the DM throws out,) and voila, you're done!'
...Well, unless it's Exalted, which has a whole nother crop of explaining (oh Charms, how I love thee, Iron Whirlwind + 5 Melee/Dex=Dead monsters. And lots of rolling.)
rpb3000 - January 24, 2007 08:03 PM (GMT)
I'm still looking for someone to introduce me to the whole tabletop realm. Because it looks like wicked fun but I understand nothing.
Lothlin - January 24, 2007 08:11 PM (GMT)
If you can't wait 'till the con, check your local comic book store. A lot of times, gamers haunt comic stores (sometimes games will be run through them,) and someone there may be able to direct you to a game willing to take newbies. Or, at least someone may be able to explain stuff.
Or, if you're on a campus, check for clubs. I'm willing to be most colleges have at least one that games (we've got two, actually, that have members that run a lot of games, our anime club and then there's a tabletop club.)
I'd offer to give you a sum up on the web, but it can be hard when you don't have the book in front of you.

No, I'm saying that since i know the rules backwards and fowards, i can explain them in under 10 minutes.
Of course i'm going to assume that the people i'm talking to are have an "int score above 10" and don't need everything spoon fed to them. Anything i don't cover would technically be covered by rule 0.
Lothlin - January 24, 2007 08:33 PM (GMT)
Problem is, people with an int score below 10 are probably going to show up. Shit, we tried to run a BESM game in our anime club, and it just fell APART because there were some particular people who would ask 'uhhh... what do I roll again?' every single time they had a combat round.
THE FUCKING D20, UGH!
Lilith's Dark Shadow - January 24, 2007 11:03 PM (GMT)
well, i also suppose its because i don't let my players roll anything other than the d20, or at least i prefer it that way since i refuse to fudge a dice roll that everyone has seen, because then people will try argue over it despites ye olde rule 0.
I'm much more inclined to just do everything myself rather than let my players actually do it, since i'd rather have them roleplaying than worrying about the goddamned rules, at least outside of the ones that have a direct immediate impact on the act of roleplaying.
Lothlin - January 25, 2007 12:35 AM (GMT)
<3 I would love you as a DM then
I hate fucking DMs that ignore the roleplaying aspect and just go for the OK random monster fights that aren't really any fun, and then when anyone actually tries to roleplay, they shoehorn them into doing things.
That is not fun. Nuh-uh.
The History Follower - January 25, 2007 02:27 AM (GMT)
I want the games at the con to focus on the role-playing, but still have the fun of rolling dice. It's always really fun when ever you roll critical successes and sometimes even when you roll a failure, especially when you were just talking some smack.
So again I ask, what setting do you all want? I've got a V:tM game, but what I really want to do is play an a more anime inspired game, something that might draw in people who don't usually play table top games.
Lothlin - January 25, 2007 03:36 AM (GMT)
*ponders*
Well, if people don't mind, we could say do... V:tM meets Hellsing or something. That would definately screw with the canon of both worlds a little bit (ok, a lot,)...
Actually, strike that idea, I don't even see how that would work and still keep to the spirit of Hellsing. All things considered, that's a two-vampire show, with a lot of crazies thrown in.
...As far as White Wolf goes (if we're sticking with the setting put out in the books and not fiddling with it,) something Exalted would probably be best. I mean, the whole point of that game is to be overpowered, completely with shiny effects AND REALLY BIG SWORDS. They tell you to go watch Ninja Scroll and Akira and play FF7 to get a feel for it, for pete's sake.
And Exalted is fun.
But it can get confusing.
Lilith's Dark Shadow - January 25, 2007 10:50 AM (GMT)
if you really want something anime themed your almost going to have to construct it yourself since many anime just don't lend themselves to roleplaying.
Kaisermikeb - January 25, 2007 11:47 AM (GMT)
Also, there is always Big Eyes Small Mouth.
Lilith's Dark Shadow - January 25, 2007 01:19 PM (GMT)
of course with that you almost always end up with a crossover from hell unless you have someone who can tell the players to lolstfu and stay inside some bounds
Lothlin - January 25, 2007 03:11 PM (GMT)
Yeah. Personally, I'm not much a fan of BESM, though that could be because the one campaign I did with it turned out disastrous.
Some of the rules are a little too ambiguous, especially for people not used to roleplaying, and it has the ability to just turn riduculous statwise. It's not a game I'd like to do unless they dm puts his foot down.
Lilith's Dark Shadow - January 25, 2007 04:54 PM (GMT)
if i wasn't going to be running around with a camera all day i'd be more than happy to volunteer to do it since i'm exactly that sort of DM.
The History Follower - January 26, 2007 05:35 PM (GMT)
I don't know Exalted or Hellsing. Sorry.
There are several animes I think could make for great roleplaying experiences. And what I mean is, I think there are several worlds that would be fun to play in even if you don't play the characters from the series. Playing a ninja in the world of Narutoor Basklis, an alchemist in FMA, an Altered from S-Cry-ed, bounty hunter in Cowboy Beebop or Outlaw Star, a mech piolt, and so on and son.
Now, don't worry about systems. I have plenty, includeing BESM and some other ones designed for anime.
I would llike to hear requests for animes, mangas, and even some video games you would like to play in. It could even just be a genre. You can suggest a system, but don't just ask for a systme or a non-anime game please.
