Title: Badge Art

Kaisermikeb - January 16, 2007 09:43 AM (GMT)
I figured I would make a post here about it. We have a lot of badge designs to make for the convention, and while we have some very talented artists on staff, I don't want to make things too hard for them, so if you have the desire to do some art for us, here is your chance!

Now, before you can do a badge we need to know you've got the skills, so a link to a DA account would be good, and even better would be a sketch or finished drawing of our mascots.

Here is the list of badges:

Alchemist
Bass wielding alien
Card collecting faux-magical girl
Catgirl
Catholic Badass
Civil defense attorney of darkness
Comatose Gamer
Cyber Punk
Dancing surfing mech
Dead Gundam Girl
De-aged detective

Demonic violinist
Drift racer
Established Pokemon photographer
Expanding mass of flesh
Father
Generic

Goddess
Goth
Hentai
Hikikomori
Horror
Incestuous time traveler

JPop
Kaiju
Knight of the Eastern Calculus

Loli
Magical girl!
Martial Arts
Mecha

Miko
Mind ^@%#

Missed the point
Moe

Mother

Ninja

Samurai
Sci-Fi
Sentai

Shoujo
Shounen

Solar Handed Baker

Super Bestial Machine God

Yaoi
Yuri

As we get volunteers do do these, I'll de-bold the ones that have been selected, and delete the ones that have been finished.
Thanks!

Edit: Please check with us before starting so you know what exactly to draw. For most of these we already have something in mind, so please ask first lest your efforts go in vain.

Tsugaru - January 16, 2007 01:50 PM (GMT)
Sent my (too long of a) list of badges I am willing to do.

You've already seen my drawing of the gals, and my dA is shut down, and I'm currently working out some issues on my Sheezy...so...

Edit 2:
Even though my email said I am willing to do 9. Catholic Badass, I can not do that one, the ideas do not come to me for it. Sorry!

Edit 3: I may send extras that are not on the list (I.e, Decora, Lolita, Ganguro...)

Lothlin - January 16, 2007 03:15 PM (GMT)

...I need to post more stuff in my gallery and stop being a lazy art student. But, you saw my doodles of the girls too XD

EDIT: A few questions came to mind; The image for the badges, is there any particular size (or size ratio), resolution, image format, anything like that you one?

kalajessta - January 16, 2007 07:29 PM (GMT)
Just out of curiosity, wouldn't you want the art to be consistant on all the badges?

Alex - January 16, 2007 07:43 PM (GMT)
Perhaps, but there are like, 80 badge types. That's a lot of work for one person.

I guess I can see that being a problem. Though, I don't understand why there needs to be so many badge types, especially some that don't make sense. Another question though, are artist getting a seperate art badge?

Lothlin - January 16, 2007 08:25 PM (GMT)
I dunno, I think having that many badges is neat and interesting, I understand them and all.

...And if Mike gives me the go, I'll probably do something at least a little more anime-ish than usual to my style (it being an anime con and all ;p)

Kaisermikeb - January 16, 2007 09:27 PM (GMT)
Every badge is either a genre of anime, or directly from a (or several) famous anime. We have a bunch because it's neat. This shouldn't be difficult to understand.

Lothlin - January 16, 2007 09:37 PM (GMT)
I kind of want to take a stab at catholic badass, i've watched enough Trinity Blood and Hellsing to pull something up.

Eh, I'll make a list. *shrugs* It won't hurt to do some sketches. Lesse...

Alchemist
Bass wielding alien
Bibliophile government agent
Card collecting faux-magical girl
Catholic Badass
Demonic violinist
Established Pokemon photographer
Missed the point
Oldschool gamer
Pirate
Silhouette with Glasses and Smile

*goes to sketchy sketch*

x.x Edited because I got a few in there I really wouldn't know to do...

I'm actually trying to figure out what everything is referencing. Lesse

Alchemist has got to be FMA, of course. Bass Wielding Alien is Interstella 5555. Bibliophile Government Agent... Read or Die? Card collecting MG is CC Sakura, Catholic Badass is Trinity Blood/Hellsing. Some of those are just obvious, and well...

Ok, I'm stuck on Demonic Violinist.

Tsugaru - January 16, 2007 09:44 PM (GMT)
Good luck with that one, Lothlin.

Ideas are quite hard..

Mike, the ones you told me to do are done in sketch form.

Once I ink them, and magically get to a scanner, I will send them to you.

Ok, I'm stuck on Demonic Violinist.

Since nothing in your DA account is all that finished, I want you to just do one to start to see if the quality is up to par.

As for Catholic Badass, I was thinking the girls holding Alexander Anderson and Wolfwoods weapons.

Heh, you got the bonus points on Bass Weilding alien, but not the obvious one: HARUKO! (Again, penny dressed as maybe nurse Haruko being psycho with Ann dressed as the long haired bass player in Interstella being cool).

Right on everything else, Demon Violinist is the title character from Violinist of Hameln, one of my favorite anime!

Lothlin - January 16, 2007 10:44 PM (GMT)
Fair enough. I'll do a quick something, ink it and color, and show it to you; I get it about the DA stuff, I have a bad tendency not to put finished stuff up there x.x

Ooh, Those weapons. I like that idea.

Haruko? x.x. Unfortunately, I haven't actually SEEN all of interstella 5555. Much to my chagrin.

Tsugaru - January 16, 2007 10:45 PM (GMT)
Haruko was from FLCL

Lothlin - January 16, 2007 10:50 PM (GMT)
*facepalms*

Wow. You're right. I had a major blonde moment there, OK, now I know what you're talking about!

....Haruko is an alien? Wow, I need to go rewatch FLCL.

EDIT: Since double posting isn't good.

http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/46818497/

Nyah. Mostly just a doodle, because doing a badge would have taken much longer and I've got homework to do.. but hopefully it's well enough to show.

(And the style is totally different then usual. Completely. More anime, and cel shaded to boot! *does a dance and flees for homework*)

This is not Biggs - January 17, 2007 04:06 AM (GMT)
I can't wait to see these... Someone make the stoic space pirate one so I can wear it all weekend.

Good call, good call.

Wyatt - January 18, 2007 12:28 AM (GMT)
As for the question that was posed about size and the like, I would generally recommend sending us big stuff (vector ploz?), but badges are going to print much smaller... While a vector format would be ideal overall, pretty much anything will do (lossless formats like png are, of course, preferred).

Lothlin - January 18, 2007 12:32 AM (GMT)
I don't have illustrator on my home comp so vector probably wouldn't be a possibility (unless I go and wrestle with the labs, and the macs there are crap). Can you take PSD? Else, PNG is totally fine.

Wyatt - January 18, 2007 12:45 AM (GMT)
http://www.inkscape.org/index.php?lang=en Free vectoring, yo.

PSD is fine too. Anything lossless, actually (though bitmaps may not be looked kindly upon).

Lothlin - January 18, 2007 12:56 AM (GMT)
Oooooh, thanks for the link. Looks shiny, I'll check it out.

Kaisermikeb - January 18, 2007 12:58 AM (GMT)
Since I'm the one who actually makes the badge designs, I should probably have a say in this!

I prefer PSD over everything else. If not that, as long as it opens in PSD and looks good I'm fine with it. Even JPG's and stuff that compress the image and loose some quality are probably ok since we'll be shrinking it down so much, but .PSD would be prefered.

Paliana - January 18, 2007 02:31 AM (GMT)
Well, I think I'll be getting some free time soon, so I could give the badge art a try. ^ ^

Most of my linearts are pretty clean, and I try to finish my art the best I can.

Not bad, which do you want to do as your admissions test?

Hmm ... well, I can draw the Magical Girl, since that one seems fairly simple. I'll get to work on it ASAP. ^ ^

Alex - January 19, 2007 01:25 AM (GMT)
Assuming the list in the first post is up to date, I'll just start going down the line five at a time.

First batch I'll do:

Antenna-less Alien Slacker
Argonaut!!!
Bibliophile Gov't Agent
Biker Clown
Comatose Gamer

Let me know if any are already taken and I'll adjust accordingly, then start 'em. ^^

Kaisermikeb - January 19, 2007 03:16 AM (GMT)
Alright, I'll talk to you Friday about those, Alex, to make sure you are on the right track.

I look forward to seeing it Palina. That one is straight forward enough that there are no special details!

Lothlin - January 19, 2007 03:48 AM (GMT)
Mike, did you say that Feb. 2 was going to be an important meeting? If so, I'll make an effort to be up x.x (though, I'll have to get directions, I always get lost on OSU campus)

Kaisermikeb - January 19, 2007 04:14 AM (GMT)
and I should make an attempt to announce that!

crknight29 - January 19, 2007 04:51 AM (GMT)
well, i would like to say that I can't wait to go to the con, but i'm curious, since i am going to pre-reg and i saw the list of badge types I could get, what some of the art actually looks like. anyone have a selection of sketches of photos of the art itself yet?

Kaisermikeb - January 19, 2007 05:00 AM (GMT)
We can't show you this years badges because then it would be too easy for people to counterfit their own. Here are some of last years prototypes for example though:

..Those actually help me a bit. I have to remember that the badges are going to be small, so I probably should keep the hair simpler and lines 'tiny shiny detail lines!'

crknight29 - January 19, 2007 05:46 AM (GMT)
thanks for those samples. pretty interesting looking. now i'll just have to decide which i want for this year.

This is not Biggs - January 21, 2007 06:47 AM (GMT)
How many badge types were there last year?
Will this slow down registration very much, do you think?

Oh, and...

Someone draw the stoic space pirate badge.

Kaisermikeb - January 21, 2007 07:24 AM (GMT)
Custom badges are for Pre-reg only, whose badges are pre-made so it won't slow reg down at all.
I think we had like 10 or 15 types last year.

Miccy - January 21, 2007 03:48 PM (GMT)
Mmm, Mike, are you reusing some of the ones from last year?

Thats a lot of badges.

So does that mean you want us to send you the finished links of the new badge art through PM or something?

Lolita - January 27, 2007 04:27 PM (GMT)
Dunno if any still need to be done, but I'd be willing to do some. Here's my DA link http://lolita-chan13.deviantart.com

I'll do any needed to be done that I can.

Hapoppo - January 27, 2007 07:42 PM (GMT)
I'd love to make a few contributions myself. My deviantart account is here:
http://hapoppo.deviantart.com
And I'd be willing to do the following in particular if I have a choice:

Comedy
Generic
Hentai ( ohmy.gif )
Magical girl!
Otaking
Pirate
Stoic Space Pirate
Strong willed environmentalist warriorette
Technically not incest
Unlicensed Surgeon

But anything that's available will do.

Kaisermikeb - January 27, 2007 08:57 PM (GMT)
Paliana: Yeah, PM it or email it to Artists@animepunch.org

Lolita-chan - sorry, I would need to see some stuff of a different style and media before I could agree to let you do some.

Hapoppo - Your stuff is far too cute! Can you do things that are less adorable? You do seem to have sufficient talent though. Maybe do Comedy as a test? That one there are no specific guidelines for, so do your best!

Lolita - January 28, 2007 02:49 AM (GMT)
What kind of different style do you need? I can work on it
