Title: Debating about Getting a Room...
kalajessta - January 11, 2007 04:16 PM (GMT)
I'm debating about getting a room for the hotel or not. I live currently near Worthington. But I enjoy staying at the hotels, since its always a hassel to drive back and forth. I'm also trying to save up money for ACen and Anime North, thus is why I'm thinking I may not stay in the hotel.
Mishikotoko - January 11, 2007 04:41 PM (GMT)
Well it'll be about a 20-25 miles drive for you. ^_~
(18 miles from my work, to U.A.)
About a 15-20min drive, without traffic...But you know, life is never without traffic.

Does AP have a code for the hotel? I was messing around with the rates earlier.

aniania
That's the code, I think

u could split a room with several people that would help alot with ur funds while still allowing you to stay at a hotel.

Why would anyone be foolish and get their own room? I don't think anyone does at cons.

u'd be amazed. at the 2006 ohayocon my friend and i shared a room just the 2 of us.

If you've got the money, why crowd yourself? For a lot of people out of highschool who have real jobs they are pulling enough income that they can actually budget money towards a con. Plus if your girlfriend or something is there, you don't want six other people in the room.
It should also be noted that buying hotel rooms really helps us out. The best way to help a con you care about is to pre-register, and to get a hotel room. Everything else (even staffing) is just bonus points.

Uh. Because my mom doesn't want her room full of sweaty anime geeks who have been munching ramen in cosplay all day. Lol.

That's understandable with parents being around. That's one reason why I'm glad I got into cons after when I was 17 so I didn't need parents around.

Well, really she is paying for the room. Lol. So I could care less who she lets in. And shes actually there for the con, not to watch me. She drives me there, we agree to meet at X time by the door to get lunch and go off on our merry little ways. She usually goes to all the art panels.

At least she's an active parent. I've known some that don't even call their kids at cons.

they could be like my rents. "don't talk about any of that fake shit. i don't want to hear about ur fantasy world. u win shit i don't care be happy about but just don't tell me."
that's what my dad says to me. the last part is a bit more recent since i won a photostory contest with my dolls. sicne then he's been telling me to find a boyfreind and get knocked up so i make sense to him.
kalajessta - January 16, 2007 09:56 PM (GMT)
I found out a few of my out-of-state friends where planning on crashing at my apartment for AP, so it looks like I won't be getting a room this year for AP.
Kaisermikeb - January 16, 2007 10:17 PM (GMT)
Just all go in on a room together then, it will be cheaper, and you won't have to deal with a 20 minute drive, or having to leave the con before you want to because everyone else wants to leave.
Yuesokka, your dad has a good sense of humor. I hope you appreciate that!

the only bad thing about what u siad is, he doesn't. he's dead seroius when he says that. he screams at me about like anime and cartoons and dolls. and says that's the number one thing he doesn't like about me.
but he can get all excited and freak when made in america comes on. it makes no sense.
and it's ok to like barbies and to buy barbies but no other doll is good enough.
that's my family

I would rather have everyone pitch in to fill the gas tank once that weekend and that's all I would have to pay for.

Support your local con! Otherwise we'll have a repeat of Ohayocons last minute misfortunes!

what's that?
Kaisermikeb - January 16, 2007 10:47 PM (GMT)
It's no secret (as in the conchair posted this on the ohayocon message boards) that Ohayocons layout sucked this year because they didn't have enough money pre-con to make the down payments and some of their space got resold. They made it up in the end with registration, but by then it was too late.
Cons need your help to be able to survive. The two biggest and most important things you can do to help a con are these
1) Pre-register: This gets money to the convention when they need it. This is BEFORE the con happens, to pay for the hotel, the guests, the airfare, and other things. After the con we don't have to pay for much.
2) Get a hotel room: Most cons have deals with the hotel for cheaper space if we sell out the hotel. Most cons CAN NOT AFFORD THE EVENT SPACE if they don't sell all the rooms the promise to, and this con is no exception. We've promised to sell out every room in the hotel, which we can do if everyone pitches in. If you overstuff a room, commute, or just sleep in a hallway you're fucking the convention over.
Even if you have a problem with me, Kala, hurting the convention hurts EVERYONE. All 1400 people who go. If enough people don't do their share to make the con a success, it's ruined for everyone.
All anime conventions, and especially this one are a give and take relationship. We're not a like an amusement park where you pay to get in and ride our rides, EVERYONE is a part of it. You're MEMBERS, not ATTENDEES. We all work together to build the event, we all take part in the event to make it a success. Panels can't happen without involvement, the dance is lame if no one dances, anime hell isn't fun without everyone laughing along, and gameshows are pointless without contestants. Just walking around with a cosplay, or even a smile helps contribute to the event. Right now there are a lot of freeloaders at cons, who expect everything to be delivered to them. If too many of these bums show up at a con it's a failure for everyone.
Remember, don't take us for granted. If you guys don't work with us on this, then we're just going to say fuck it and stop having the con. We don't owe you anything. We're all volunteers who are doing this in our spare time out of love for fandom and anime. If we don't feel appreciated, and if we get burdoned with extra stress because you guys can't pull your own weight too, then why should we bother?

I'll have to talk to the others about it, but I don't think they're interested in getting a room.
