Title: Computer games
Description: Is this possible?
sniper - January 10, 2007 03:36 PM (GMT)
I'm wondering if it's possible to have computer games. There are a lot of games that are very fun and even multiplayer, like Worms.
Wyatt - January 10, 2007 06:57 PM (GMT)
I have it in my crazy head that some fun doujin games get set up. You know, stuff that's anime related as the spirit of the con calls for. We'll certainly see what happens, eh?
Kaisermikeb - January 10, 2007 09:32 PM (GMT)
I think he means multiplayer computer games, rather than what we would be doing.
It's not a bad idea (especially since he's talking stuff like Worms, rather than like.. CS or something), but I'm not sure we have the space/equiptment...
On that note though, we should totally have Lemmings

I don't know if this is possible in a hotel, but....LAN PARTY! If they would just let us use their network for one night, we could set up our stations in our rooms, start a windows chat for everyone to join, and organize games, tournaments, whatever!
I think we should look into this
Kaisermikeb - January 10, 2007 09:45 PM (GMT)
We've looked into it in the past, but it's currently not feasible. Maybe in future years to come, or if we have a location with more space for people to bring in their PC's.

But what about my idea? If we all just set up in our rooms, theres plenty of space!

A while ago we brought a bunch of X-boxes to see if it would work, but they don't have ethernet ports, just those shitty dataline deals. The wifi is fairly decent, but get's bogged down pretty easily too, and with 1400 anime fans running around, you have got to figure that there is going to be a lot of traffic lagging up the system.

Hey now, just because you know my USUAL doesn't mean that they're all single-player only. Take Melty Blood, for example, which is a fairly well-tuned fighting game. Eternal Fighter Zero or even Phantasmagoria of Flower View. Ragnarok Battle Offline is a good one too.
sniper - January 11, 2007 03:26 PM (GMT)
I just think it would be fun to set up some stations with either multiplayer games like Worms, or LAN games like Counter-strike or Starcraft.
Fax - February 21, 2007 07:48 PM (GMT)
or you could just go to a Lan party...
I have attended
Whempy's Lan Party in Columbus and had a great experience. I personally would not take my PC to a con b/c I think I would miss out on the con. Then again there are quite a few more Lan parties per year than local Anime cons.
Kuroshi - February 25, 2007 10:37 AM (GMT)
Worms can be played via Hotseating, so only one computer would be needed.
Alternatively, get one of the GC/PS2 Worms games (World party or 3d), and let the explosive goodness rock.

Hmmm.. speaking of melty blood... I need to retune my laptop and find my game disc for that.
It would be kinda fun to have a random worms station or something of that sort. I haven't played that game in forever... SHEEP! However.. that would require a big thing... someone with a computer that they wouldn't mind having beat up a bit (it always happens when a bunch of people try to play games on a system).
Understandably if you brought your own computer with worms and played it with friends in your room it would be fun. But I wouldn't suggest putting out a valuable piece of technological and let it get beat up like that. Consoles work find in the situation because they are built to be sturdier and more 'mobile' and because the interface isn't directly on the hardware (unlike a laptop which has it's keyboard RIGHT OVER it's motherboard).. if anyone got rowdy with a desktop (tower) system or someone's laptop and broke it it could have cataclysmic repercussions and cost a LOT.
If you could find a computer system that an owner would want to put up to that risk you could think about the other stuff later.. but even if you plan everything out you still might be short a system.
(Wow... I know this is a dead thread and was meant for AP07.. but I thought it would be worth it as a precaution in case someone wanted to try this again for AP08.. as I didn't notice any computer docks at 07.. gomen)
KaiserMikeB - November 16, 2007 10:45 AM (GMT)
It is a distinct possibility. I do like worms, and the conventions does own two computers that are for con purposes only. One usually ends up in collective gaming though, but perhaps they could play some worms in there even.
Cornix - November 16, 2007 04:30 PM (GMT)
Well.. collective gaming normally meant like visual novels or dating sims if I remember my time at AP07 correctly... (granted.. I might not)
There's a whole different kind of energy for people playing something like worms. As long as they (the computers) can (or are allowed to) take a small bit of a beating from overly excited congoers (I mean.. they are blowing small pixellated worms up with bouncing sheep and holy hand grenades) than it should be fine.
also there are a few things and/or peripherals you can pick up (or mcguyver) to make it a little more durable, or if it's a desktop you can go out and buy a crappy keyboard and mouse for it and hide the tower behind cardboard under a desk or something.
Counter-strike and other lan-based games are really mostly unnecessary.. but a lot of the computer fighting games (or action games like worms) where you can have multiple people play on one system are probably a better go.
MAME things (as long as they aren't illegal...) or other things (Melty Blood most noticeably) as well as worms or other 'addictinggames.com' esque games that are multiplayer (or singleplayer and far too addictive) are much better choices and easier to pull off.
KaiserMikeB - November 19, 2007 05:31 AM (GMT)
Heh, fundamentally I agree with just about everything you have said.
On that note, right now I play Luxor for about 3 hours a day.
Cornix - November 19, 2007 02:41 PM (GMT)
Wow.. Luxor.
This reminds me of when Bejeweled was all the craze.
I'm trying to hone my tactical thinking at the moment so I'm playing a lot of medieval 2: total war and galactic civilizations...
Kitten Cannon is still tops as far as the free interent scene goes... maybe curveball.
Yuffie - November 19, 2007 11:00 PM (GMT)
Wow, I wish I had a little enough of a life to do that Mike. I haven't sat down a played any computer game, or any game in general for that long in forever. Except WoW, once or twice. >.> Beerfest.
KaiserMikeB - November 19, 2007 11:41 PM (GMT)
I do it instead of sleeping. I do quite enough living between running my con, going to school, going out with my girlfriend, and hanging out with my friends.
Yuffie - November 20, 2007 12:01 AM (GMT)
Hey, I didn't mean to offend, I know you do a lot. I count anything I do besides school as not having a life/everything I want to do in life right not.

Like you have a girlfriend Kubo. :P

Yeah... she's on the forums... you know, Codi?
Cornix - November 20, 2007 11:17 AM (GMT)
I'm too tempted by this to not interject with a simpsons quote.
'This new comic book man is not one of us! He has a girlfriend!'
[collective gasp]
'Hi... my name is Strawberry!'

;_; :( :( :( :(
*is saddened*
But yeah, Michael's all about Luxor. I'd be afraid of bringing something addictive to Punch, because I can see it like this:
Guy: Hey, Luxor looks pretty sweet, kinda gay but cool..
*guy plays a few rounds of Luxor*
Guy: That was pretty cool, yeah.. oh man it's time for the Eva panel, better run, yo.
*during Eva panel*
Guy: Must play Luxor.. must defeat it.. must save Egypt... AUGHHHHH *runs out of panel*
Panelist: Man, Asuka's boobs must be a hot button for that guy!
And therefore misses Punch.
I second Melty Blood, and def. Twinkle Star Sprites.
bluenigma - February 9, 2008 05:32 PM (GMT)
I would quite like to play Immaterial and Missing Power against some other humans. Though hopefully, that's already been considered and planned.
