Title: What kind of things do you buy in artist alley?

kalajessta - November 21, 2006 05:23 PM (GMT)
I'm just trying to get an idea of what I should be focusing on making for AA this coming year. What do you guys buy in AA? What would you like to see that is sold in AA? Also, do you buy fan art (if so, what) or original art? Thanks.

rpb3000 - November 21, 2006 08:17 PM (GMT)
Buttons, stickers, and other cheap fun things to decorate stuffs with happy.gif

Miccy - November 21, 2006 09:22 PM (GMT)
Agreed.

Small cheap things. :3

Note, we'll be joining other conventions in the crackdown on merchandise in the artist alley.

Stuff like bookmarks and buttons that feature other peoples characters could, and probably will be considered merchandise.
Fan art is ok, like prints and stuff, but stuff you can find in the dealers room that dealers actually pay the rights for can't be sold in the artist alley.

If you want further clarification PM me, or email that artists address.
Note, for the time being it is totally ok to sell buttons with original characters and phrases and what not.

Would plushies count as merchandise if they're hand-sewed and homemade?

Kaisermikeb - November 23, 2006 05:23 AM (GMT)
I don't think your plushies are going to raise the ire of serious dealers. As long as they are as amature as last time, it's probably ok.

I'm going to have a few tables set aside as "craft" tables, for people like you, and wood-burning-Mike, and what not.

Since you're stuff tends to be on the threshhold of what is considered ok or not, you might want to email a list of all your stuff to artists@animepunch.org ahead of time to get stuff cleared.

This is encouraged for all artists, as if there are complaints about artist alley at con we will be policing it and asking artists to remove questionable materials.

Well, about original art vs. fanart.
I definitely prefer original art.

I definitely prefer original art.

I don't get deeply into certain animes, and I love original.

I'm not good at fan-based art. :0

Just an idea I thought about starting up again, but for a while now I've been wanting to produce new badges. But these badges will have a theme: new school anime verses old school anime. I've always wanted to see what people favored and I think this would be a good way to find out. What do you guys think? Aye or nye? Any suggestions for badges, etc.?

Examples:

Sailor Moon vs Tokyo Mew Mew
Card Captor Sakura vs Tsubasa
Excel Saga vs Haruhi

Kaisermikeb - January 13, 2007 05:48 AM (GMT)
Excel is NOT oldschool!
It's also not the same genre as haruhi, not by a long shot. I would say Tenchi vs Haruhi

smokie - January 13, 2007 06:49 AM (GMT)
New school versus old school would indeed be interesting.

Yu Yu Hakusho vs. Bleach would be a good one.

So would Eva vs. RahXephon.
Hey before anybody starts saying shit about Eva not being old school you must remember it is getting on in years. Switch Eva for something else if you can think of something better.

Maybe just maybe DBZ vs. Naruto.

I was thinking Tenchi vs Love Hina

Yuffie - January 13, 2007 04:40 PM (GMT)
I think it's a neat idea.

I'd definitely like to see something for old school vs. new school for horror, but I can't think of exactly what would work. Hellsing vs ?

I'd say Gundam Wing vs Gundam Seed, because I like to see GW somewhere but I think the orginal Gundam would be more apporiate. MS Gundam vs Gundam Seed.

Gundam Wing vs Ghost in the Shell:Stand Alone Complex -Both of them science fiction anime aired on Cartoon Network, around the same time slot I believe(GW uncut.)

The problem with Gundam: It has too many series. I understand people are still into it alot, even the old school series. But I don't think it would work for this.

I was thinking of putting Hellsing up with Blood+ or Black Blood Brothers. Both just came out last year and are very good vampire anime.

Kaisermikeb - January 14, 2007 01:15 AM (GMT)
Love Hina and Tenchi are not spiritually related. They are also only a few years appart if you count Tenchi in Tokyo.
Love Hina is sort of like a modern Maison Ikkoku.

As for Gundam, it would not be had for a gundam fan to make the appropriate comparisons. You my love, are no gundam fan. I'd steer clear of that one for fear of messing it up (people take their gundam very seriously)

You got that right. Mecha is a pain in the ass to draw anyways.

But I will have an example up of a a badge shortly. I'm almost done with the one I've been working on most of today.

Yes. We do. I'm thinking of getting a Zeon flag in my room actually!

kalajessta - February 5, 2007 05:39 AM (GMT)
I'm stuck at what badge to draw next. I've been debating about this for a couple of weeks now and I need to get more badges done. Any ideas anyone? What would you like to see to get done next?

DKong - February 11, 2007 01:04 AM (GMT)
Uh...well, to answer the initial question: I like to get stickers and cheap prints. I prefer black and white, cause it's usually cheaper...

crknight29 - February 11, 2007 11:26 PM (GMT)
i bought bought a badge at Ohayocon, but what i'm looking for is an original artwork that i may hang in my collection...someone should try making cels.

That may be a problem with copy right laws and fall under the merchandise category. I actually attempted to make two cells once. It was a fun experience. But I learned that I needed better paints.

Kaisermikeb - February 12, 2007 07:39 AM (GMT)
Actually cells of original characters would be something that no one would object to. It would actually be pretty neat!

Kala, what old school had you been thinking of? Cause I'm thinking like.. Fushigi Yuugi would be cute. But even *older* school would be Rose of Versailles, which would just be awe-inducing. I'm not sure why I'm leaning towards shoujo, heh.

The badge you posted is looking pretty cool ^^

I was actually going to do Fushigi Yuugi vs Harukanaru Toki no Naka de since that seems to be a series that is very similar to Fushigi Yuugi.

Good call! Another could be Utena vs Rose of Versailles, because they're pretty similiar too.

Thanks. I've always had a natural thing for it since I could learn how to hold a pencil ^^;;

crknight29 - February 15, 2007 09:54 PM (GMT)
i'm pretty good with a pencil, but unfortunately it comes in the form of writing not drawing.

kalajessta - February 19, 2007 06:27 AM (GMT)
Since time is starting to be a problem, I only completed the original quota 3/20 badges for my Old vs New School badge series. I'm about to have the 4th one soon, so I need some opinions of what you guys would like in my badge series.

Some ideas and examples:

Yu Yu Hakasho vs Bleach
DBZ vs Naruto
Rose of Versaille vs Utena
Tenchi Muyo vs Love Hina

Are there any certain series you would like to see or would buy? Any of the named ones above? Any ideas will help right now. I should have my Tsubasa badge done by Tuesday.

mikalaya - February 19, 2007 06:44 PM (GMT)
ARe you only allowed to sell anime related items? My bf makes mini cartoons, and his drawings aren't at all anime like..more like Invader Zim type art. He's into gothic art very dark. I was just woundering because he wants to start selling his work at convetions next year.

Kaisermikeb - February 19, 2007 10:34 PM (GMT)
The artist alley is specifically there for people to sell their original comics and artwork, so you're boyfriend is more than welcome to be there. People who sell merchandise are taking advantage of it.

Alex - February 19, 2007 11:01 PM (GMT)
There's also that wonderfully fine line between artwork and crafting.

mikalaya - February 20, 2007 08:13 PM (GMT)
OH YAY he'll be sooooo happy to know that!!! thank you soooo much!!!

:P

crknight29 - February 20, 2007 08:23 PM (GMT)
I would be interested in an original manga if there are people that will be selling them.

kalajessta - February 20, 2007 09:59 PM (GMT)
Shall I state this again: What would you like to see in my badge series? This is a thread for my art, what I'm having or planning to have at my table. I am looking for suggestions on what type of badges you guys would like to see, not art types.

Yuffie - February 20, 2007 10:38 PM (GMT)
I don't think you need to object so much, it may have started off as a thread focused on you, but right now it has turned into a people mentioning what they'd like to see, and what is objection, since that was mentioned here.

Also, you're already overburdened by the badges. Don't demand more unless you can finish your load first.
