Description: So Sweet So so Sweet....drool

Attention everybody I played the Wii at my friends house and it rocks like nothing I have ever seen! All I played was some Wii Sports Boxing but it was great (gameplay not graphics) and I can only dream of what Red Steel and Twighlight Princess are like. I have now decided to pick one up as soon as possible and I suggest you folks do the same. I mean how can you not after seeing that Call of Duty 3 commercial? I am sorry but if Nintendo gets support for this (and I think they will) Sony and possibly Microsoft will get owned.

But what exactly made the wii so great besides the game?

Lothlin - November 21, 2006 12:48 AM (GMT)
I, alas, have not managed to get my hands on this amazing system for my self yet, but one of my friends was gracious enough to let me play his.

I'll say this much, without spoiling stuff, that Twilight Princess is absolutely amazing. It didn't take me very long to catch on to the controls, it's very intiutive, and even though it lacks the freaking photorealism of the other two consels... it still looks damn pretty. I swear, I'm probably going to like that game more than I liked Ocarina of Time.

And finally, FINALLY, my habit of waving the controller at the tv becomes USEFUL. Because I can totally do it, and it translates into AMAZING SWORD-WAVING KILLING POWERS. Also, the way the spin attack is done has got to be the easiest I've seen; I spent the longest time in OoT trying to get it right, in Twilight Princess all it takes is a flick of the wrist and, bam! It does what you want.

So amazing *swoons*

The motion sensor controller. From what I can tell it works pretty well and its an insane amount of fun. I loved working up a sweat(I was wearing a hoodie I ain't that fat) using the controller to box and I can only imagie how this will transfer to FPS and RPGs and more serious fighting games. Imagine a Star Wars lightsaber battle where you can 0wnz0r the punx b17hs using your L33T Vapaad sk1llz just like Mace Windu. *sigh* Sorry thats just a dream I've had for a while but now it is one step closer to reality thanks to Nintendos excellent system.

i fail to see what the controller will offer an RPG other than short lived gimmicks.

and are you even seriously considering that controler to be good for an FPS? If so, you've obviously never played an FPS that wasn't utter garbage.

Well I just hope it does not go the route of the power glove in time. Unlike the power glove where it was just an add on, the whole system seems bulit around the idea of motion sensor, as well as Downloadable classic games.

Sure you can do more now then you could with the power glove, but after all it was just a gimmick that people got tired of. At least they didn't introduce the Wii in a "hit" movie like the did the power glove!

"I love the power glove, it's so bad."

I think you have just based your comment of pictures of the controller. I admit I had my doubts about it until I handeled it. Even the recent Call of Duty 3 commercial where we see it in use can leave you bewildered never having handeled one. I feel confident to say that despite how weird it might look and seem the egronomics are good and what is seen in the commercial would not be uncomfortable. I held the controller and nuchuck in that manner and it made sense all of a sudden. As to me never having played any good FPS I will say in my defense that during my lifetime I have played many first and third person shooters which include Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Halo, Halo 2, Sin, Sin Episodes: Episode 1 Emergence, Call of Duty 2, Golden Eye Rouge Agent. The only problem I forsee with it is a bit of accuracy loss using a sniper weapon and that would depend on how much it involved the motion sensor. In a full or semi auto fire fight it will do the job. As for what it will offer RPGs I feel it is obvious, it gives you more role playing depth having to perform task phisically to accomplish them. That ain't a gimmick thats putting you in the game. I was mainly talking about fantasy RPGs when I made the remark mainly fantacising about what the Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind or Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion would be like implementing the Wii's motion sensor technology. If thats not what you are into in the way of RPGs I am personally looking forward to Harvest Moon Wii so I can use it for a fishing rod and farm equipment.
Also I don't think this will go the way of the power glove. Its just too much fun and Nintendo is putting a lot of faith in it and they can't afford any more failures or they will go the way of Sega.

and are you seriously considering the controller to be no good for an FPS? If so you've obviously you've never played a shooting game at an arcade that wasn't utter garbage.

no, i base my coment on the fact that I'm a PC gamer, notably in the FPS area. Now i'm not saying it won't be fun and all to use that, it's just that when compared to key board and mouse its well... utterly inferior, especially when you take the game and add multiplayer too it. Oh, and yes for the record, an FPS being on a console is grounds for it being garbage.

and nice one mike, i totally forgot about my arcade shooter days... but i don't believe they make those with online multiplayer now do they.

smokie - November 22, 2006 04:22 PM (GMT)
As a fellow PC gamer I understand what your saying. The keyboard is the most excellent tool of online fraging of your opponents. In Halo the Warthog can be controlled so much better with the mouse than it can with the controller on X-Box. I myself look at it this way the more ways to get great gaming in the better. That is why I support the Wii and the 360 in addition to my PC.

Lothlin - November 22, 2006 07:11 PM (GMT)
Mouse + keyboard is always going to be the best for FPSes, hands down, but the wiimote is a step up from more traditional console controllers. I could never manage to get good in aiming at any console FPS, the control stick is just too unintuitive, but I could see myself getting good with the wii. Mind, Zelda isn't an FPS by any stretch of the imagination, but the aiming for the slingshot was quick to pick up and pretty damn accurate.

I could seriously see a star wars game on this system, y'know? It would make the lightsaber fights INFINITELY more fun than the guessing game that they were on any of the PC games.

Kaisermikeb - November 23, 2006 05:47 AM (GMT)
While the mouse may be a more profficient tool for aiming, what with nearly unlimited scroll speed and what not, I generally dislike the keyboard. Controllers give you adjustible speed, and at least the potential for being designed for the purpose of video game utility built around a hand. Plus having an actual trigger is pretty cool.
I've made these points before, but to me a controller feels like a natural extention of myself. Maybe it's because I've grown up with them or what not, but for first person games it's the tool for the job for me. For mecha games, or games like Planetside where I would be in a powersuit or mech a lot of time time, a keyboard felt more immersive since I was piloting something.
I guess immersion is the key word for me. One of my favorite games to play is Steel Batalion. I'm terrible at it, and it's probably not that great a game (at least for single player) but the controls are so cool it's hard not to enjoy! You're really in the moment. If the controls don't feel right, then the game isn't fun. I remember endless ammounts of dragging the mouse back for Mig 29, a game that's controls made it hard to get into. Likewise, keyboard commanded fighter games wern't much fun either. Getting a Joystick made X-wing and WCIV a lot more fun, and after it broke I didn't really play any flight games until Rogue Squadron came out.
Back to FPS's though, the controller is like the best compromise for me. I get to move and shoot fluidly, and while it would probably be more fun to go out and play paintball, there are very few rocket launchers, snipers, and charge dart riffles in the woods. Depending on how the Wii is implimented (especially with the gun attachement for the controller) I may have as hard a time going back and enjoying shooters on controllers after it and I do going back to keyboards presently.

It would be nice to see an online arcade game. Every now and then an attempt is made at one, and from what I understand they exist in Japan, but it might be the thing to bring life back to American arcades. Ethernet access is pretty much standard now, so I don't think it would be too much trouble to install them. It's just a matter of implimentation.

Lilith's Dark Shadow - November 23, 2006 06:00 PM (GMT)
while i guess for the immersion aspect and all, i have no problems with someone prefering a controller to a keyboard, it makes sense, and the same goes with using the analog to achieve various movement speeds. However, when considering an online FPS, all of that goes out the window. All you need to do concerning movement is have a fast mode and a quiet mode, the inbetween doesn't matter so much.

and mike, no matter what FPS game you play, i will always be able to out maneuver you with a keyboard and mouse, and that will never change.

Even more linking games, like Initial D and Guitarfreaks/Drummania would be cool. or those cool face-to-face sit-down, fighting games you see in manga all the time. Stuff that encourages players to win against each other. The main hurdle I see for the American arcade, however, is price. I'm not at all inclined to play an arcade game if it's going to cost me $1.00-1.50-2.00. Bring back the days of $.25-$.50 games and I'll go. This point was my big(est) gripe with this last ACen's game room.

Back on topic, I definitely see the Wii being big at cons, though keeping track of the remotes could be difficult. Same goes for the wireless versions of the 360 controller and the SIXAXIS.

Lothlin - November 23, 2006 08:45 PM (GMT)
See, I grew up playing PC games, so going to the controller tends to be the more awkward transition for me. I think a lot of it really does depend on what you grew up with. Though, I do tend to use a joystiq/throttle thing whenever I'm home from school for mech games and flight sims, it works wonders.

Er. Yeah. Personal preference, all that jazz, not much else to say about that XD

I agree; American arcades are ridiculously pricey nowadays, I can't help but get excited whenever I run into a .50 DDR machine, no matter how crappy it is. There are some places that have a blanket entrance fee for the whole arcade and don't charge for games once you're inside... 'course, the last one of those that I went to was at Disneyworld, and half of the machines were broken, and it was more bloody crowded than any arcade I've been to in my life. I shouldn't have expected more at Disney -.-

I had PC games way before I got my NES you know! It wasn't until controllers started evolving that they got less akward. Genesis in particular was difficult, especially for a small kid whose thumbs had difficulty reaching the c buttons!

Lothlin - November 24, 2006 03:28 AM (GMT)
I'm not saying you didn't have PC games!; but honestly, I didn't really play much in the way of console games that weren't RPGs or platformers until I got to college. I haven't had much practice on shooters, on consoles at least. ...Hell, come to think of it, I didn't have an N64 until quite a bit after it's launch, and my ps2 isn't an early-gen either. I've never been very quick on picking up console games until recently.

I want the next Warioware for that. That'll be sweet.
